you may not be able to determine how much money the movie may generate - but you can definitely determine how much it cost to produce.
and you can certainly argue that the earnings potential for the movie could be reduced in such events - as a bad review might deter people from seeing the shitty movies that Lucas is releasing under the Star Wars name these days.
not possible. have you ever seen how much gold is in fort knox? there is a shitload. I think its something like 70 billion worth of gold in that building. and its a hell of a lot larger than 10x10.
its called leach mining - and yes they use a lot of very poisonous compounds to get out the metals.
The sad thing is that the amount of soil they ruin for a gram of gold is enormous. IIRC its like couple grams of gold per ton of soil. In order to get the gold out they pour arsenic or cyanide (cant remember which) through the soil.
Near carson city nevada there are still large pools of this shit just sitting there.
wouldnt this be a monopolistic move for them to add security consulting. I mean we all know their track record...
but seriously. who is to say that they arent going to engineer security holes into their systems that only they know about - then come forward and say that they have the fix - but since its such a "complex" issue - the only option to fix it is to have their value added security consulting force come in and "secure" your systems.
no thanks Microsoft. I am not happy with you in general - why would i trust your lackeys to secure my systems. An MCSE is one thing - but a Microsoft employed security consultant is a whole 'nother beast.
Reminds me of that simpsons episode when Billy G want to buy out Homer's ISP - and he "writes a check" for the ISP through his thugs smashing the place up.
If you have 3 or 8 friends - you should all dress up as doctors - then tell people that you are "4 out of 5 doctors agree" or "9 out of 10 doctors recommend"
and go around agreeing with everything - or recommending everything.
I have been thinking about this. there was a discussion about this a while back here on slashdot talking about the gesturing as seen in minority report.
it was stated by myself and others that the gestures that good 'ol tom was using were too exagerated and that nobody would want to use such large flailing movements to navigate through files, video etc...
it seems to me that the most efficient way to "gesture" your way through information would be more along the lines of morse code.
I would much rather just ahve a touch sensitive mouse pad (better than the touch pads we see today on laptops etc) and you would tap in certain patterns to acheive what you want.
this could also be placed on the tops of keys on the keyboard.
what if you tapped out "J J J" (not hard enough to depress the J key - but enough to register the tap on the sensor on the J key... this action would then do whatever you assigned it to.
the other option is chording buttons on the mouse.
I have the MS intellimouse which I love. the two thumb buttons are assigned to forward and back and I cant stand it when i use a mouse without these functions.
If you were to add more buttons to the mouse - you could then chord certain actions.
I am just very dexteritous with my fingers - and using them in tapping and chording formations just makes more sense to me based on my particular preference.
IIRC wasnt mike roberts (whatever his name is) from MP3.com the one who immediately went out to register MP4.com when all that legal stuff happened ove MP3?
it was a while ago - and I didnt pay much attention, but I believe this is what happened with him
"....meaning that game developers are essentially tool developers for game enthusiasts to create mods...."
well the thing that this may lead to is that it will just shift the model out one layer - in that all the really good mod developers out there might actually start game houses. Granted this would take a while - but you can even see now that some quake mod developers are starting small "companies" (term used very roughly) and creating products. Whether they are actually selling them - or just making them is another issue.
In any event - the rift might end up being so that the two types of really prevelant games are 1) MMORPGs and 2) Engine provided with a decent yet small Campaing ala NWN. with the tools and intentions for user end mods.
While I do not think that this model would apply to sports games - the RPG genre is definitely a perfect arena for this type of development model.
What we really need in gaming is some revelutionary ideas in the area of interface and gameplay (not to mention the need for new genres entirely - not an easy task.)
This happens all the time. Most companies out there have really bad management. I used to work at a VOIP company - www.quicknet.net
They have hands down the worst executive management I have ever seen. They had a truely brilliant engineering team - who were producing some great products - but since the executive team is so incompetant as far as managers go, they lost all their best employees.
They havent totally died yet - but they are not where they should have been in the market due to their really really poor decisions.
so - this is normal. Most of the really big companies all have their share of bad management but they have gotten over the hurdle to where they are big enough to survive off of processes put in place when good management was around. If you look at any large organization you will find a certain percentage of driftwood employees and managers who just float through their jobs by creating pointless things to do.
I brought this issue up in an article I submitted - but was rejected by the editors.
You are correct in that space has been deemed "The province of all Mankind" - however these are flawed human beings we are talking about here.
The problems we will see with going into space is claims to resources - and the protection of those claims. At this point it is set to be that only the companies that can pay off big governments, or are run by big governments - will be "allowed" access rights to resources.
There was an article talking about how mars might be the wild west of the future (it is very short - but you can extrapolate in your head) which brings up interesting points about how territories will be handled. this article is much longer on the same subject. It says "MAN'S conquest of the planets could become a Wild West in space if privately funded expeditions are the first to open up the final frontier, experts claimed yesterday." this is *absolute* crap - its a scare tactic, this thinking will lead to such things as "UN space territories and resources allocation commitee" or some such thing.
Although it might sound good on paper to have some body who is responsible for handing out deeds to land and resource rights on other-than-earth bodies, the problems with a commitee of any sort like this is that their interests will be heavily biased by the corporations and governments that already have huge financial weight over world economies and UN budgets today. This means that the likely industry to aggressively go after domination of space resource rights would be the oil industry.
They know that fossil fuels will run out someday... and they have shit loads of money and political might. Just look at the top levels of american government - every single one off them is a corrupt oil puppet.
I think that things should be done now to ensure that the resources in space are not "owned" by any company - or "licensed" to some company for a rediculous amount of time like 150 years....
Any AC's out there that know anything about the optics on satellites?
I had a neighbor who worked at lockheed and was a satellite engineer.... he was talking (in code of course) about some of the imaging capabilities of satellites.
how does 13.8Mp compare to the eyes in the sky? if we are going to get 13.8Mp at a semi-consumer level - what do the feds got above our heads and how do they compare. what type of optics do satellites use? and how good is the resolution - and how far/fine can they see?
youre right - those are two things that I cannot stand in a game. Why the hell would i care about gameplay or fun. and since we have such crappy hardware out there - why would i want a game that would even think to include good graphics to deepen the experience. I must be a fool to think that any game that had good graphics, good gameplay and was fun and compelling could be made.
I may as well just settle for zork I. that was a fun game - I enjoyed the gameplay... but the graphics were, well I guess it doesnt matter huh. We should focus on text adventures again only.

if you want to get rid of someone - hold an apple seed eating contest at your next party!

1. Make big insecure operating systems ....

2. Form Securtiy Consulting Arm
3.

That's it - I'm getting one!
Lets just hope that he is not on the George Lucas movie release timeline.
Then in the future the 1337 kidz will be in situations like:
MOM: Tommy, take out the garbage.
TOMMY: *looks up, down, left, right, left, right* What?
MOM: Tommy what the hell is that- stop making those gestures at me with you eyes.
TOMMY: * looks down, right, around, up, down* What?
MOM: that's it! Go to your room.
and kids will be kicked out of class for using gesturing to communicate secretly behind the teachers backs.

I read slashdot for quite a while before getting an account. I think I registered in early to mid 99 - but not really sure.
/. is only 5.
I always used to read the articles between tasks at work - no time or interest in commenting way back then.
but now.... I spend too much time on this site.
