  1. Re:Cringely on Internet Phones Replacing POTS In Japan · · Score: 3, Insightful

that is true - however there is a major problem with people adopting things like this. *Lazyness* seriously. the ability to make good quality voip calls has been around now for a few years - and there were businesses that started up around this; quicknet, net2phone, dialpad etc...

but the problem is that the telephone is something that has been around for eons when compared to the age of the internet. and people have a certain level of psychological loyalty to the institution of the phone company - desired or not... and its this state of mind (the phone bill is like the dial tone - its always there) which thwarts the efforts of businesses to capitalize on VOIP.

even though everyone likes to bitch about their phone bills and the prices per minute that they are paying, its going to take the mob mentality to really cause a difference here in the states.

it boils down to simplicty conquering lazyness of american consumers i.e. the phone is as simple as it can get. go buy one for ten bux - plug it into the wall. the phone company does the rest. the only thing you have to remember is your phone number. and for some, that can be hard enough.

so until we can get close to that with VOIP capable devices... it will be an uphill battle to get them fully adopted.

when you compare a shopping list of items that most of the consumer market associate with real VOIP (if they even know what it is) calls (computer (obviously not in this article... but the mindset of voip is voip==computer required) internet connection (==$50/month), *knowledge* ("but I dont know enough"), etc...) - to the phone, its a no brainer for people who want the lazy way out. even if they are paying "evil mci" etc too much.

besides - people like hating the companies they pay their bills to.

so whats really important at this point is to get people to see that VOIP is not just available, as good or cheaper - but JUST AS EASY as the phone. then we will get the ball rolling. and thats where these companies need to spend their marketing *and* development dollars.

its a very touchy subject. I agree that child molesters are bad bad people. And I usually think that they should get the mandatory death penalty - but its tough when you do realize that they were most likely molested as children themselves.

whats hard is - if you think that all molesters should just be killed - then by extension should we just kill the child that they have just molested? Wont that child grow up to be a molester? so shouldnt we just kill them?

On days I think that we should just flat out shoot the people who are convicted of molesting/killing/raping/harming children. no prison time. just guilty - walk em out back and shoot them - or throw them in a crematorium... alive.

nambla should just be illegal period. they should all be drowned as you state.... its tough.

whats really really sad is the situation that people live in - places like thailand. forced prostitution of children, and the very very seriously rampant methamphedamine addiction that has swept thailand over the last five years. There are children as young as 5 that are drug runners for the dealers there - they use small girls because they know that the police will not stop and seach small girls. then as they get older they get them hooked on their meth. its called yahewa or something... and costs about a dollar for a pill. you can eat/drink/snort or smoke the shit - and it wrecks you.

this is very serious for several reasons: rampant drug use by the young populace who become addicted - and are forced into sex slavery - and spread aids. Thailand has very high HIV infection rates. (botswana is the worst, with something like 39% of the countries population having aids)

a very very sad state we are moving into in the next 20 years. They said that 60 million people will die of aids. and with the rate that things are going... nobody is going to care - so long as they have money.

the field - like I said, you put a dollor or two in the field *once in a while* and only when you are up.. if it hits a 12 you get triple.

it isnt about the odds of winning... its about enjoying the game. and it makes you feel good if you put some money in a yo or field bet randomly and hit it.

Also - I only bet with money I don mind losing.. I go to have fun - not tout my statistical superiority.

In my experience, playing a bet one in a while for the dealers and winning is very beneficial. if you never tip them and only bet then I could see how they would not like that - but if you tip AND bet for them it helps.

Ya Craps is a fun game... I have played a lot in Reno - but my first trip to Vegas will be beginning of september...

I know the game rather well - my ex-father in law was a pit boss who taught me how to play.

I play the pass line for the most part. On come out bets I throw a dollar or two dollar (depending on table rules) on Yo (11) or C&E (11 & 7) - this has very good odds if you hit it.

also about every 4th or 5th bet I will throw a few dollars in the field - with hopes of hitting a 12 (pays triple)

but yes tipping the dealers is very important. Also - dont just tip them, bet for them... if the bet wins, they get much more than you would have tipped them in the first place. throw a few on a number for the dealers....

    this does two things:

they watch your betting style, and tell you when to play on certain bets.

when you get rather drunk - they watch out for where your money is, and keep track of your bets. (and no not for the house... some are really good about trying to help the better win)

looking forward to playing in vegas. But never bet with money you cant afford to lose.

it grabs card 42 and puts it in a slot
it then slects a number at random (now out of 51)
it takes that card and puts it in the slot.

you tell the machine how many decks its holding - it then selects the random number from the total range its holding....

if you follow the link that you have in your post you see that the others are sitting on a table - the main design feature of the ones you reference is the *chording* - whereas in this design the major feature is the ergonomic usability and portablity which is based on the chording keyboard.
