But are you (not you personally) taking into account that it is "attached" to the Earth for 62K miles? That, I would think, would have a larger impact.
Also, it always seems to be the "non-issues" which turn around and bite scientists in the ass.
Realistically, I am more concerned about a failure causing all or some of this thing to come back to Earth. I have read and heard to many scientists (related to this concept) "trivialize" this concern as something completely unlikely.
Not to sound crass so close to the Anniversary of the Shuttle disaster, but if an accident happens for a rocket it normally affects less then a dozen individuals. While that is most certainly a tragedy, it would pale in comparison to something like this wrapping around the Earth, causing massive amounts of damage to several contries and untold thousands of people.
Plus, the idea that they want to anchor it in the Pacific with a sea platform??? Why not granite or some other bed rock that would be SOLID??? I don't see it happening, nor do I think the entire concept is sound, safe or in general a good idea.
But then that is the beauty of posting here, the text above represents my opinion.
The only good I see coming out of the research would be the materials research. New technologies in material science. Stuff like stronger fibers and flexible building structures would be a nice side affect of the research.
It is a BAD idea. It is a waste of time and will lead to a severe accident.
Searching for a better "bottle rocket" as some one on/. put it is a much better idea.
Another/.'r made a comment about the impact on the Earth's rotational speed being affected. I think that would be a pretty important concern.
Given that we are concerned about the "slight" change in our ecosystem (Global) by Global Warming. Wouldn't it make sense that a slight change in the rotational velocity of our planet have a dramatic affect?
Many ask can we do it... I ask should we do it? I don't see why we should.
More and more studies come out saying studies are just that, studies.
Not, experiments! Not, hypothesis! Not, anything more then an observation of a few hundred... Oh wait CORRECTION!!!
SIXTEEN!!!! subjects.
Junk! It's not even close to news worthy.
It cracks me up that people even spent the time. They probably were pressured to publish SOMETHING or lose their money.
Also,/. is late on this one, I saw this on the news last weekend.
Oh well, back to the normal work load, because according to this study I should stay up and not be groggy, but I'm sure I have seen OTHER studies that indicate we need atleast 8 hours of sleep. I should do a study to see if the grogginess comes from the fact that Americans are working themselves into this state...
"Acknowledge that a little faith here and there isn't a bad thing."
I don't think that was ever an issue.
You have some valid points about the "choice of examples" but science is supposed to be objective and unbiased. There simply isn't a way to repeatably prove (or disprove) ID. That, in and of itself, does NOT give it credibility as "science". It's NOT, pure and simple. It's speculation based on a theology... WHICH to my knowledge, there are hundreds of thousands of theologies. This provides speculation with so many variations because most of them (theologies) believe in different ideologies.
Religion is a human built structure to promote control and organization in our society without it, it is unlikely we would have come this far as a society. (which in and of itself is a form of evolution) Politics is just the latest version of that (societal control mechanism). (There are even different "beliefs" in that area as well ergo Communism, Fascism, Democracy, etc.) Heck that may explain why in many places religion and politics intertwine so much and look what happens in those cases... (that's another discussion)
The scientific laws used to determine the validity of an experiment (hypothesis, theory) with repeatable results are universal. In most cases where there is something unexplainable a theory can be created based on the known laws, which have been proven time and time again, to explain it... It may not be testable at the current level of technology but in time we will more then likely prove or disprove it... Look at what we have proven in the past two decades since we have advanced the computer so much. In Mathematics there have been advances as well.
Nothing like that is possible in ID. It's "belief in" a higher power, or "faith that" a higher power intervened.
Now, that's all well and good, and you may believe that is the case, but how about this...
What IF "your" (plural, not YOU specifically) God is actually an Alien from another galaxy, solar system, dimension, take your pick and IT infected this planet accidentally with some "bug" from its planet and we are a possible evolution of that "bug"
OR
Maybe that Alien race decided to start an experiment with our planet to see how things turn out...
OR
You see where I am going? It's ALL speculation!!! Based one WHAT???
A BELIEF and a FAITH... a theology... which isn't even planet or nation wide... meaning it isn't even accepted by ALL of the people of this planet.... not even 90%... not even 80%... try less then 35%...
Hell there are people in, I think it's the Philippians, which have a ritual where they spend a year cutting down this tree, clean it up, prepare it with a whole bunch of ceremony and then everyone rides it down a hill... Some people get killed, injured and other wise permanently maimed and I am not condemning it... I am simply pointing out an example of another belief which is so different from most Judeo-Christian theologies doesn't even fit within the realm of Christian peoples understanding...
In science we use laws which have been proven time and time again.
Religion uses faith, belief and fear/hope to give it parishioners "peace of mind" that there is something after death... ID is just another example that religion uses to say look, God/Whomever loves you and you will be with him because you came from Him/Her/It...
I even like to HOPE that this life isn't everything... I would hate to miss out on more conversations like this...:-D
I'm NOT using it for a desktop OS... I have used three different versions of linux for a desktop OS for various time frames (most recently Fedora C2 for 5 months and CentOS 3.4 for 8 months)...
It is NOT consistent, the file sharing over networks with Windoze machines is not consistent and often busted.
So, as far as I am concerned it is a server OS which I use ALL the time for my personal development as well as work (creating browser based applications with perl, PostgreSQL and Apache). Until whomever can make the UI work right, it isn't worth the time wasted struggling to use it...
I think it is about time someone took a stand against companies pumping shit out to the customer before it is ready. Especially since it is obvious this was done to beat the Xmas season...
In addition, I don't like the way it was posted... "a Chicago man who was lucky enough to purchase an Xbox 360"... OH PLEASE!!!! "lucky enough" You make out to be some amazing thing... It's JUST a GAME BOX!!! Hello!!!
WoW!! When playing games is THAT important life must be truly sad.
What is it with people that have to "label" this and that? Labeling is one thing but labeling a generation is about as useful as saying you're a Libra or some other zodiac symbol.
Gen X, Gen Y, Gen @, Brat Pack, Rat Pack, etc. etc. It is so sickening and annoying.
I am venting, I think the whole thing should be ignored. It's as useless and pointless as watching the E! channel. What CRAP!!!
Pay attention to something of importance instead of media driven drivel.
I mean this may have been stated already, BUT, Blizzard may come after you under the DMCA for some form of "slander".
I think you clearly stated your case and opinion, but I can see this potentially causing an issue with this post of yours... I know that sounds a little silly but this country has gone crazy with some of the stupidest things happening these days.
~GreatOak ( I have used this one for about 10 or 11 years and I know what you feel about being possessive of it. )
I understand what you mentioned about their reasons for building it. You must admit though, how "some" people can interpret "they thought the Gods would return and judge their progress" as end of the world, at least as far as "some" christians would view it. Personally, all I can think of when I read that quote is the Gods come back and say, "You FAIL!!!" LOL!!!
Well maybe you don't hear it, but anytime that thing (Mayan Calendar) gets mentioned so many people I see/read/hear come up with the WHACKIEST things about it... I simply posted an amusing-to-me comment/opinion that popped in my head reading the article...
Personally, I don't think this new clock could possibly last 10k years but who knows...
Anyone remember how "some" people get/got all worked up about the Mayan Calendar? How it "ends" at, oh I don't remember exactly, but it was supposed to end sometime around 2005 or 2006 I believe...
So...
Who's to say that the Mayan Calendar creators simply didn't do the SAME thing these people did? That is to make a Clock/Calendar which is accurate for 'n' number of years into the future.
There is NOTHING cosmic, or "End-of-the-world-doom-and-gloom" about the Mayan calendar either... It was probably something as simple as some Mayan's decided to make their Calendar last for a LONG DAMN TIME!!!
I mean does a Legislature in the State of NY NEED to make $75K a year PLUS the MOST comprehensive benefits around?
NO!!!
You want to save MONEY, stop paying these asses and letting them give themselves raises at OUR expense.
They want a pension, let THEM use the Social Security System; it will be fixed inside of ONE QUARTER!!!
They want medical benefits??? Let THEM use Medicaid; it will turn into the BEST medical benefits around. To top it off everyone will use it and the businesses will be relieved of THAT burden. THAT would reduce some of their overhead in America to bring jobs back...
But NOOOO, most republicans and other non-thinking Monkeys don't like to shake things up for the wealthy...
It amazes me that anyone is surprised by this. I knew from the moment that idiot in office opened his ape like mouth that he didn't mean a DAMN thing about getting us to the Moon or Mars. It was completely a ploy to garner votes for the tech sector.
I wasn't even interested in sending Manned missions to either but the focus on Space has ALWAYS created new technologies. Always!
Our country is going down hill and we are speeding up. Why because people keep voting in smooth talking, do nothing ( except for themselves ), useless, used car salesmen like politicians into office.
Ok, so that is a HUGE over simplification, there is also this shallow focus on superficiality that most of the country has but still these politicians are not doing anything except padding each others' wallets and pockets with OUR money.
Oh well, no one listens to extremists till it is far too late... Sad thing is I am not an extremist I just sound like one when I get so enraged.
This is as stupid as the companies which manufacture the Genetically Modified corns (and other plants). They end up going after some farmer who plants another corn crop adjacent to the field with the GM corn. The reasoning is that the pollen (carried by the WIND) which goes into the other corn field produces their "super corn" and therefore charge them for it...
Even though there is NO way for them to stop it...
Oh well...
I do, however, think that the PROCESS that a company used to decifer the genetic material is patentable (provided they are specific in their methodology), but that is about it... I remember hearing about these stupid patents about 2 to 3 years ago, and thinking to myself "you have GOT to be KIDDING".
gotta love the COWARD postings...
Most excellent!!!
Thank you!!! I was just going to post "Pot and the Kettle" or "people who live in glass houses".
How much did THAT survey cost?
Geesh that was money well spent!
I understand tidal forces. I understand that they are slowing the planets rotation.
See this...
