  1. SSN is an account number on Pendulum Swinging Toward Privacy · · Score: 2, Insightful

My Social Security Number (SSN) is an account number. Why is it used by so many companies as a form of authentication? It's simply a string of numbers indicating where money is stored for social security benefits. The ignorance of companies in relying on this single number as a form of identification and authentication is what has caused this problem. I should feel free to give out my SSN to anyone. It's not a password and should never have been USED as one PERIOD.

Source upgrades to FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE are only supported from
FreeBSD 5.3-RELEASE or later. Users of older systems wanting to
upgrade 6.2-RELEASE will need to update to FreeBSD 5.3 or newer
          first, then to FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE.

    And from INSTALL.TXT:

Warning: Binary upgrades to FreeBSD 6.2-RELEASE from FreeBSD
4-STABLE are not supported at this time. There are some files
present in a FreeBSD 4-STABLE whose presence can be disruptive,
but are not removed by a binary upgrade. One notable example is
that an old /usr/include/g++ directory will cause C++ programs
to compile incorrectly (or not at all).

Why eliminate the modem?! It's bad enough I have to drag around a serial port dongle for router/switch configuring, now I need to drag around ANOTHER one for modem functionality? Hey Apple, why not eliminate the hard drive too, we could just run it off Firewire! Heck, drop the monitor too, will make it thinner... :-(

Modems are essential for business. Broadband/wireless is not always available and the ability to send and receive faxes was quite nice on my PowerBoook...it's sad to see this drop off. But Apple seems to be changing quite a bit. The latest series of iPods show all the cost-cutting they are doing to increase profits. No more dock, no more foam pads for the headphones, no video cable, etc etc etc.
