Those things scared the hell outta me too. I think the only thing that was worse, was the floating brain creatures in Ultima Underworld 2. They're basically the same thing, but you usually see them in the ethereal void where it look like one giant LSD trip or something. Yeah. Don't do drugs.

This game also affected me a great deal. It is the only game where I was totally immersed and felt like I was part of the world. I think this game was the best FPS ever made, if for no other reason than its amazing graphics and that ability to get you playing for days on end. Everything else I have played has sucked compared to it.

Unfortunately, that's pretty much the only good thing about the game. The graphics were spectacular, but I think that's all they spent time on. The gameplay sucks. The story sucks. Everything felt pointless. The original Unreal kept me glued to my seat wanting to keep on playing all the way to the end with the queen. I got bored of playing this game after defending the ship from whatever those weirdos were while the wannabe c3po alien guy acted like a retard. Seriously. Save your money. This game sucked. It was a waste of P2P bandwidth. I'm glad I didn't buy it sight-unseen as I did for the original Unreal and Unreal Tournament. Both were far better.

I totally agree with you, and I actually searched the article for MPC to see if someone had posted about it yet. I love MPC myself, and so do all my computer-literate friends. (Even some of the not-so-literate ones). The point is though, while it is technically a "lossy" codec, it loses so little information that it is considered transparent. While there is technically one patented process used by it, it's far fewer than say... MP3, and Philips (I think that's the patent holder) doesn't really care if Andree Buschmann (MPC's author) uses it.
As is mentioned in the previous post, there's support for win32, linux, and OSX support is being worked on at this very moment. (Check hydrogenaudio.org's forums out for more info)

It's lameass because VB promotes terrible programming habits and does not help you to learn a real programming language that is cross-platform or in any remote way efficient. If I were trying to decide what kind of language to have someone learn to program in for the first time, I would choose python. It IS cross-platform, and teaches the programmer about all the various types and classes. Also, its indentation practically forces a person to learn good syntax. Good stuff.

I hope the guy is right. If he is, then the courts will (more than likely) end up voting this down, because it is way too extreme. There are far easier and less intrustive ways of making products secure.

I wrote a letter a couple weeks ago. Let me paste it here.

    ----

    Dear Representative Walden,

This afternoon after I got home from school, I read an article in the news about a complete injustice that had happened as a result of the signing of the PATRIOT act. A resident of Oregon, Mike Hawash, was "detained" as a "material witness" and put into jail without even being charged with crime. The premise under which this was done, was that he donated to a charity known as the Global Relief Fund. While recently it has come under some attack due to the fact that members of Al-Qaeda donated to this charity, his donations took place a long time ago and I think it is unlikely that an Intel employee is a terrorist.

A material witness is typically someone that may have testimony relevant to a criminal investigation before a grand jury. It is legal for them to be detained if they are likely to leave the country or if they are a threat to the community at large. This man has been living in the United States for 19 years and has been a citizen for 15 years. Before then, he lived in Palestine. He's not a recent immigrant from a third-world Arab country. He's not a convicted felon. He is a computer engineer, working in the same profession I am currently studying for, that donated to a charity. The provisions that make sense on paper to protect people's lives are too vague and too easily abused as is clearly evident in this case.

The powers needed to track down and prosecute known terrorists already exist. We have enough terrorists already in jail for crimes that they have been tried and convicted for that can provide the probable cause needed to get remaining terrorists in our country. Looking for so-called "deviant" behavior to find terrorists is no different than looking for disgruntled teenagers likely to shoot up a high school based on their clothing style. The people likely to commit crimes are generally mentally unstable people that could be of any race, gender, religion, etc.

Another issue about the situation of Mike Hawash that bothers me, is that all of the associated documentation has been sealed and kept private. In fact, the only reason that this was made public was through the efforts of a friend of his who put up a website (www.freemikehawash.org) for his behalf. Generally, the due process of law is not sealed and kept hidden from the public.

In conclusion, the PATRIOT II act is coming up for consideration and vote in the near future. It is my personal view that it is too extreme, but I also may not know all the facts. Thus, I urge you to think carefully before deciding for or against it.

    Respectfully,

    ----

Yeah. I woudl advise anyone around here to do something similar.

The only thing that prevents a geek from being picked on, is focusing too much effort on learning how to count in binary and write fractal encryption algorithyms instead of spending a little bit of time on socializing.
