  1. Re:Unsatisfied customers! on Laptops Outsell Desktops in Retail Stores · · Score: 2, Informative

Actually, I bought a LCD at the beginning of May, and I am quite satisfied with it. There's only a slight pixel lag which is most noticeable when scrolling webpages. (No joke!) I can't even notice the lag when playing games or movies. As for the viewing angle, I have no problems whatsoever. I can look at my screen from pretty much anywhere and have no problems.

20 watt power consumption, reduced heat radiation, and smaller footprint on my desktop all while having sharper text than before? Sign me up :D

Reading from the review, (which hasnt yet been slashdotted) they did the same thing I did when I made a briefcase computer. That is, make a hole right above the CPU fan and have it blow out. The powersupply looks incredibly wimpy so it is doubtful that it would generate that much heat. Also, from the looks of it, the AC to DC conversion doesnt take place on the actual powersupply. There's probably a separated power brick for it. Thus, the only heat-producing component in there of any relevance would be the CPU.

Ok, after googling for a little bit (I will never MSN anything!), I found a site who has done just what you were describing with MPEG video.

    http://www.ai.mit.edu/~brussell/research/sres/data /

Anyways, it seems that without proper filtering, the output looks REALLY weird. (look at they guy walking in a circle in front of the quilt) It seems that the motion vectors from the MPEG get taken in as part of the detected edges somehow! Thus, this would be most useful for uncompressed analog video as an input.

  9. Re:Oh yea. I've seen this. on Increasing Video Detail Using Super-Resolution? · · Score: 1

Okay. Let me debunk you. What you are describing is impossible. You can't get more "hidden" detail out of any image. What the poster of this article is describing, is using additional detail from nearby frames in a video sequence to gain additional pixels. In effect, a higher resolution image is created because the amount of data is there. It just needs to be juggled properly.

This principle applies to astronomy. If you want to find faint galaxies, you simply increase the exposure time for your video device (CCD or photo film) and make sure your tracking is right. Then you just let it go and in effect do the same thing as is done here digitally.

  10. Re:Spatial vs. Temporal on Increasing Video Detail Using Super-Resolution? · · Score: 3, Interesting

Yes, typically there would be. However, if you look at the Duke U thesis, it uses MPEG's own motion vectors to determine when there's motion video (vs. a still scene) and compensate for this. Thus, what it will accomplish, is making still shots look a LOT better (and more compressible!), and in the fast-moving scenes it will do very little (but you won't notice it that much, either).

If my programming skills were better, I've be VERY interested in seeing if this can be done with MPEG-2. Noise originating from the original video has always been my primary gripe with those kinds of sequences. if this could be compensated for and exported to MPEG-4.... MMM that would be tasty.

It's not that simple. MP3s can be a double edged sword. People know what they're getting before they pay money on it. People will refuse to pay for crap, and are much more likely to pay money for something chancy if it's good.

This isn't a simple equation where one can assume that changing one variable will result in a change in another.

Not to sound like a troll, but I fail to see your logic. The point of having a few mp3s is to give them a sample of what the rest sounds like. (Or in the RIAA's case, the few good songs on a CD). Also, my experience with indie bands is, well, that they suck. My cousin was part of one, and it wasn't what I would consider remotely stellar.

I buy CDs for music that I downloaded the MP3s of and found good, but that music has all been Good music.

I had a talk with my astronomy teacher on this topic of processing. Apparently what is done, is the color information is squashed so that a basic 3:1 compression can be done with hardly any effort at all. Alongside the huge image file, is a color table that lets it be re-added back at the other end. Albeit it's as crappy color as TV. This is very common among pictures taken from space.
