Since I deal more with our internal software/services (opposed to dealing with the customers) I don't do really have to fix anything other than wipe a machine or two. However, for me, the worse part of this is the kneejerking that occurs right afterward.
Now that this worm hit, management is crying for more security without really thinking it through. Now all staff machines need to be behind hardware firewalls. ALL machines. Linux, Solaris (95% of our boxes), Windows. Not such a big deal except they bought us cheapo netgear cable/dsl firewalls that I'm convinced will do nothing more than ipf/iptables to stop a determined cracker. These netgear firewalls stop me from mounting NFS of anything, they have no trusted hosts options. In fact, I can only port forward from everywhere, so in a sense it is lowering my security.
Does anyone else experience reactionary steps like this from the PHBs?
IT (especially Tech Support) is about solving the same problems over and over again. That's why I wasn't happy with it, I need to be creative and the IT jobs I've had, save the current one, did not allow that.
You're assuming that the BIOS goes in to get the data.
You could also have the data go out. Say a plugin might have Outlook export all the data into something that dodges all your concerns. A plain ASCII file into a standard place that is not in an ntfs partition. Maybe some space on the board in the chip or something.
Maybe Taco can get him for Ask Slashdot so we can all berate him with "questions" like:
"What are you doing, stupid?" (5, Informative) "Why are you such a jackass?" (5, Funny) "How big is your penis now? Do the creams really work?" (5, Funny)
"Don't let it out for M$ and don't copy a M$ or console game."
This leads me to believe that the plan would be to stop someone from using it.
However if you do make a game that runs best on linux, say you get double the framerates or whatever. Will that really be enough to attract people over from using Linux? I'm not sure if it is.
This is hypocritical. Everyone on/. complains (and rightly so) that vendors (Real, Microsoft, whoever) change standards, develop proprietary apps. etc so that they force you to use their platform.
"Yeah, the whole computer needs an overhaul. Your modem is shot, and really, you might be able to get another 1,000 megs out of it, it's not too safe to be ridin' around on the internet like that. And while I was in there I noticed your processor is kind of old, we might want to go ahead and update that for ya. And with that comes driver updates and refits. Should have it by Tuesday. Wednesday at the latest. Here's the estimate."
"500 dollars!?"
"Yes. Legally, I can't even let you take it home because of the modem."
"What's this at the bottom? Rust proofing? Collision insurance?"
My monitor is pretty new (a couple of years old -- samsung symaster 900nf) and I get color in the first one and the dark vertical bars symptoms on the last three.
Listen: It's one thing to (allow) link to a major site to report a story without warning or a cache (though I don't buy the reasons they give in the FAQ, but that's another rant), it's another thing to link to a site for that has no relation to story.
Practically everyone on/. knows who milton is, there was no need to link to this poor guy's site at all.
I'm just asking for a little consideration from the moderators not a linking policy.

(THanks for reading my rant
Still no reports on what the sawfish eats.
These drugs should just take the nanostairs. They're getting a little nano-pudgy.

Looks pretty random to my eye.
"But it actually does not work with a severed finger these days."
So I've been cutting off fingers for nothing? That's great, what am I gonna do with all these things?

And now you want to go and do the same thing?

1.) I wasn't bashing MS, jackass.
2.) I use BSD.
"Microsoft Rereleases Patch to Fix Problems"
all of them?
What the FUCK are you guys talking about?!
That's what ls -F is for.
It takes a special kind of person to actually enjoy retirement, and call me cynical, but I don't think Godzilla is that type of person.
In a couple months he'll start a consulting business.
"Video Games Make People Fat and Mean"
That's OK, because studies like this make you stupid.
Because if pretty girls like you, then pretty girls may touch you. And that's what it's all about.

This is an unholy superhuman.
Do you have to complain about everything? Honestly, we can't take you anywhere.

I don't believe that for a second.
i guess they really called me (-1, Mad)!
slashdot can't deal with my socially conscious cutting edge humor.
