I believe the largest contributor was picked up and probably got paid some for retail/steam CS because valve could change the terms the agreement that the mod was made under. I think Gooseman was the only crossover between AQ2 and CS though and really he just gifted gun models to AQ2 and that team went on to do other action mods for free.

Anyone else I can think of(Team Fortress people, Threewave, Splash Damage, mappers/modelers) would not have been paid for their hobby works that got them the job.

When you get in to smaller made from scratch games the success stories can get more interesting because the owner can decide to sell their product at any time. Apparently line rider, N+, and Flow would fall into this category where a free PC flash game was sold on consoles or handhelds. They could actually sit back and collect royalties without more work if they wanted.

In the shooter game market some got good enough resumes to get paying jobs out of their free work. I do not know if anyone has made significant money retroactively for what they did for free.

Someone doing work that is wholly their own can get some success if people will buy it but someone working on LBP or in the mod community has no legal revenue stream from that work.

Here in BC we've always had caps. I think they've doubled more recently from 30 to 60gb.

With lots of web usage and many large files I haven't had a problem. If you are on cable and are uploading at max speed 24/7 you'll pass your limit, but otherwise most homes should be fine with the smallest of caps.

People complaining about comcast's 250gb limit must be doing it out of principle because that is an extreme amount to use for non business.

I would actually say that mine(adsl with telus) doesn't offer enough bandwidth to realistically reach the cap. One big download seems to clog the pipes these days.

Surrey Transit is quite bad. It takes about half an hour to get into Vancouver by Skytrain(last year I had a job with an office near the Stadium stop). Unfortunately a bad bus wait to or from the house can double that time.

When I took the bus from my house to Kwantlen's Surrey campus, a commuter college, I was leaving 2 hours before class because if I left an hour early I would get there 10 minutes late. By car it takes 20 minutes tops.

Green-ness is supposed to be getting better with more high rise apartments going up and building up central areas but right now that is all in Whalley which isn't the nicest place to go.

Maybe some companies will get rich by outsourcing libraries of ultra high res background models and textures. Games striving for realism they could take full advantage of some desks, lamps, walls, doors, that they buy from a graphics house much like they get the q4/ut/source engine.

Another possibility is the procedural stuff that wil wright kept talking about in spore. This technology could be used to take simpler textures and make them look good on the fly maybe.

capped playtime might not be very good in an mmo model. It could discourage the player from playing sometimes which could lead to them quiting.

would players be able to switch from one model to another?

I think players would use the accelerated account to level up in less playtime(waste less of your life grinding) then switch to the cheaper model that doesn't have capped playtime and play the "fun parts" of the game. The community might not like this.

The hardcore player might get many of these more expensive accounts instead of many of the traditional type though which would raise the profits.

Everything has it's flaws, a company might decide it works.
