I'm glad to see that one of you "big city" people that have taken high speed connections for granted for so long, is getting shafted by the phone company! Welcome to BFE (bum fuck egypt) also known as Western Kansas. When we got a new phone line to use for internet, our connection speed dropped from 49333bps to 26400bps. When I called the phone company, I was told that we were just s.o.l because we lived so far out in God's country that it would be a few years yet before they updated all the phone lines to handle the faster connection. With no cable internet service in town and wireless so damn expensive, the general public doesn't have much choice on the ass raping the phone company gives us everyday.

So in response to you "poor baby I couldn't whack off at work for two days because my phone line sucks....", I say FUCK YOU, get over it and move back to the city you yuppy scum!

Waaa Waaaaaa CRYYY!!! How about Western Kansas?? DSL is very very expensive. Most people haven't even heard of cable internet; in fact we just recently got digital cable service for tv. Cable internet is still a few years off. All that we common folk have
for internet is dial up modems. Even if our ISP is 56k compliant, we still cant get the 48800 or 49333 speeds like we shoudl, no our phone company is still in the stone age so most phone lines around can't handle the load so we get stuck with 28800 as our max bps. I called the phone company and they too said it would be a few years before they updated around here, basicly said we live out in BFE and they have to take care of the big city whiners who think their cable internet service is tooooo sloooowwwwww waaaaaaaaaaa!!! i really (sniff) cry (sniff) every time i hear someone complain about shitty cable :'(

You cannot compare the seed industry to software. All that i have read so far is people saying that you can't control seed; it's like software that reproduces! I'd be surprised if 1/8 of slashdot has ever been on a farm, let alone been on one.

Companies spend millions of dollars and many years to come up with just one hybrid. I know the majority of /. is anticorporation, but where do you think we would be without corporations? They are the ones that foot the bill for most of the research.

For Monsanto to sue this guy, he would have had to be growing more of their special canola than just a few seeds that blew off a truck. Those famous trucks that people have been saying Monsanto planted, probably belonged to his neighbors. It is not very likely that seed blew off of a company truck. They take a little more care than that. This just happens to be one farmer that tried to cheat the system and got caught.

As for the hybrids, these are highly protected. One seed company was just sued for theft of a few hybrids that happened over twenty years ago. One bag of seed cannot be sold without royalties being paid to the biotech company that provided the technology to make that hybrid organism/pesticide resistant. There are many hybrids that can't be bought without prior approval and a contract to sell the product back.

Lots of money is spent in the ag community. How many people do you know would write a $20,000 check just for some dried pieces of organic matter? The same people that pay over $200,000 for a machine to harvest that product.
