  1. Re:Here's a start for you. on Dealing With Laptops in a Business Network? · · Score: 3, Informative

If you attempt to wipe the machines where I work, you shoot yourself in the foot.

At that point, if you want to install any work related software, you need to be a member of the domain/active directory. If not, you don't get connected, either while in the office or via VPN.

Of which, you can't install the necessary VPN software unless you are in the office, or we ship you a cd.

We haven't had anyone try to get around this yet. I think it's safe to say the people who work on them in my business realize they'd be down a lot harder if they tried to....

  2. Re:We're doing this right now on A Simple Tool for Tracking Switch Ports? · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is the best idea yet.

At my $place_of_employment, we use the Fluke Optiview console. What it does is it polls every port and every device on every port. Then you can either dig down a list of hosts, printers, servers, etc - or you can have it print out a network diagram (using MS Visio) or give you a switch port printout, which lists what is on each switch - down to the IP, computer name, MAC address, you name it.

It only works with Layer 2, though - so you need remote endpoints on each of your routable ... endpoints.

Don't ask me how much we paid - I'm sure it was expensive. However, it definitely took us less time than rolling our own. But, if your switch is managed, for documentation's sake - you can probably use the switch to find all this information out yourself!

  3. Re:What about Bose Headphones? on Is the iPod Generation Going Deaf? · · Score: 1

I've tried quite a few Senns, and had a chance to demo the entymonics. Therein lies my true rule:

There is no replacement for displacement.

Ultimately, that means that when I'm in my "zone" at work, I wear fairly large headphones - Senn HD457's at the moment. I have a pair of HD202's at home that I like listening to a little more, but they close out a decent amount of noise and make my ears sweat.

I have a pair of the earbud M-500(I think that's the model #) - but earbuds hurt my ears (even without the padding) and again, no bass.

I also have the pcx-200 (I think they're the 200's... the ones that are noise cancelling without the noise cancelling unit) - and from a bass perspective, they're SLIGHTLY better than earbuds. I even tore them apart - they have a decent sized driver, but the driver just doesn't move. It's too stiff to move a decent amount of air.

So, I'd say look in the Senns or even Grados. If you're looking for Bass, you're going to have to get a larger set of cans, though.

    By which law?

I know that in my Ford (1999) if the airbags go off, the reset for the fuel pump may automatically shut off, but all I'd have to do is pop the trunk and hit the big red button....

One of the myths I've heard about the cow crushers on police cruisers is to not trip the airbags and render the cop car useless in case of a collision.. but again, it'd probably just be that pesky fuel pump reset....

Yes, the Klipsch I bought were expensive. If I recall, I paid about 150$ at Comp-Usa for them. A lot of my friends thought I paid too much.

    Then they heard them.

They are probably some of the best all-in-one computer sets you can buy. And I did a lot of research. The only other pair I considered were some Soricco (sp?) speakers, but they weren't local, and they were also 2x as expensive.

My main point is, if you want good sound, like with anything else, you will end up paying for it.

But, once you pay for it, it will last, and you will enjoy the sound for a long long time!
