Of course, you have to know how to keep a straight face around people - not many people have this gift. But I would definitely get more pleasure out of having the person "wonder" who knew.... haahahaaa!

Well of course, Do-It-Yourself is almost allways cheaper than a ready branded solution. I can build a Xeon server box for $2000 yet a similar performing Sun system costs >$10,000. One is over $1000...so what, some cars cost 10 times more than others, etc.

Wow, you're really comparing apples to oranges.. not even the same product family!

What the parent was talking about was taking a monitor and a tv tuner (of which is what makes up a LCD tv) and it being at a significant price point lower than buying a similarly equipped LCD TV. You're talking about Sun hardware compared to Intel hardware????

  14. Re:I don't on AMD Desktops Outsell Intel · · Score: 1

Similar things that almost turned me off of AMD... In their K7 days, the Via MVP3 chipsets needed the chipset drivers installed to get an ethernet card working in Win98se/2k (something with the PCI bus)... Of course, just something little, but kinda pissed me off that the ethernet card wouldn't work right away...

Next, I was heavy into TomsHardware, and bought a kt133 RAID (abit?) mobo. I used to have really weird issues with that board... Finally figured out that it's REALLY sensitive to the quality of memory (had to go all out and get the best stuff I could find) and it didn't like sharing IRQ's across the PCI bus.... so I couldn't use a SCSI card, TV tuner, ethernet and sound card at the same time (along with switching on the RAID portion of the mobo, which took slot 5 out of the picture completely...)

Now, given, these weren't AMD faults, but since I was having problems specifically with that platform, I really pined for an Intel solution.

Nowadays, myself and my fiancee are running on XP's with mine on an Nforce2 board (asus) and hers on a gigabyte (kt400?) board.... and neither of them has given us ANY problems.....

AMD looks to be finally back to rocking. Can't wait to get rid of my k6-2 file server, though..... darn spurious interrupts....

Are you running that on a digital out?

I know that when you want to do 5.1 "the right way" from a computer, you're going to bypass the DAC that's in the sound board to send the audio directly to the receiver. In my estimation, every sound card (onboard or what not) is about on par with very good quality this way, since the onboard DAC isn't sending amplified trace noise out of the board.

I've got a TB Santa Cruz in my machine (still about 50$ or so from your local retailer) and it kicks butt on it's analog outs -- I use a set of promedia 2.1's which were admittedly expensive, but good price/performance when compared to me buying a stand-alone reciever, speakers and sub. I haven't really found a good on-board solution that has (to me) no perceptible noise when pumping it through this set-up of mine.

I would love to buy a digital solution, but the 2.1's work fine for me, and while I'd like 5.1 sound, I just wouldn't see too much benefit from it... (not a hardcore gamer, more of a music afficiando[sp?]....)
