Low bitrate mp3's and Oggs are like that. Once you hit higher bitrate, it starts to become preference. Kinda like Vinyl and CD.
And to be honest, I would never pay for a 64kbit/s Ogg or 128kbit/s mp3. If I were paying, it would have to be the max bitrate for either (I dunno what ogg's max is, but let's say 320kbit/s constant for mp3, using lame and no lowpass filter etc)..
Actually, I hadn't thought of the GPS angle. I wonder if it's illegal to have a "Driver Navigation Unit" in view of the driver. I know that you're not allowed (or maybe it's frowned upon) to have a DVD or video screen playing for the driver, but I would love to have a full color screen for a GPS as well (I've got a palm vx with the magellan GPS add on, but while it's useful, b/w and old maps suck)...
I just bought a Grand Marquis (I'm not that old, but the car is comfy!) and have plenty of room to start putting something together.... Would love it even better if I could mount the equipment in the trunk, outta sight, and just have a fold up LCD or even a detachable panel for it up front. I hate thieves.
I don't listen to radio unless I'm riding with a coworker to lunch, etc. I hate ads, not knowing what the songs are, etc. If in the off chance I do hear something good, it's usually either from bands I follow or it's MTV stuff that's catchy.
Recently, I bought a mp3 cd player. I have about 10 discs in my car, but I usually only listen to 1 album at a time. Having fewer discs is sweet, but I am still contemplating putting a laptop and a decent interface in the car.....
I would think that listening to a TV's flyback "whine" would damage you more than help. I know I'm one of the few people who are utterly annoyed by crt whine, and it's annoying to not have enough money to buy a good LCD tv (expensive) to get rid of that sound in my home theatre.
And at this point, I've got tinnitus as well. Only in my left ear -- when I was 13, a firecracker went off pretty close to my ear, and I've had the ringing ever since. Of course, some of my activities don't help it, such as playing guitar or drums... but, I'm taking much better care of my ears than I did when I was a teenager, and I hope to still be annoyed by TV whine when I'm 80!:)
Actually, with ABS, the computer in the car can tell if you're slipping the rear end or the front, on each independant wheel... All it would take is to take the following into consideration:
1. The slowest moving wheel revs/sec 2. Pressure on the brake pedal 3. Pressure (TPS - throttle position sensor) reading on the gas pedal
Actually, you should probably replace #1 with "all wheel revs/sec" for about 5-10 seconds before end of capture. That would give you a realistic picture of what was happening in the car. If you wanted to get really fanatic, you could even have mini gyros in the car to tell which way the car was sliding etc, or have lean indicators at each wheel to see if one side was up higher than the other.
Speedometer readings are just one of the things the computer takes into account (per the ABS system) of ALL WHEELS to make sure things are running smoothly, so to speak.
Now, come on. The newer systems that I know of don't log every second that you're in the car -- not saying that it won't get to that, but anyways -- they just can tell "abusive conditions".
For instance, like doing burnouts? The computer can probably be set to record an event where the car is travelling 0 and then hits 40 within 1 second... That's usually a sign that the traction is overcome on the rear wheels, causing spin (and lots of smoke).
Or, they could record when you've hit that rev limiter for the hundredth time that day, causing undue stress on the engine. Either you don't know how to shift, or you're racing all over town like a madman.
If conditions are met that could cause failure (that is NOT under warranty) there is no reason we as consumers should expect the car makers to pay for it. Our level of common sense should kick in at that point, but as people, we like things for free.
As well, I'm not saying I've never done any of this, but I'm certainly not going to blame the shop who tells me that I'm fucking around with the true limits of a car, and that's what caused the defect....
Actually, you should be able to find a copy for mame... if I recall, I've got... I mean, I have a friend who has a hard drive image to use with mame to play in an arcade cabinet....
About 10-15 year old equipment sometimes can't handle that properly. We had an old stereo in our teens (it was probably about 10 years old) and a friend of mine told me to move the speakers. What he didn't tell me is that the amp was on.
Poof. Fire. Apparently (correct me if I'm wrong) the old amps that didn't have any short or open protection would just burn the mosfet's on an open(no) load condition...
I've been looking at projectors for a while -- the only one that I've found in range is the infocus x10(correct me if I'm wrong -- I'm going off of memory) that sometimes you can find on sale for 800$ or so. I would love to have one, but to find one that would suit me would cost $$$ new, and I doubt I could run into a find such as yours....
I've also looked at 52" widescreens to replace my tiny 27" TV. Now, since I've got other things to take my time and money, I may just go with a 32-36 inch TV... I don't have the money to spend on top shelf equipment just yet... maybe someday....
It also depends on your view of how important money is.
For instance, I would love to have the high end of everything. Would it really make my experience that much more pleasing? possibly.
But right now, I don't have the money. Sub 400$ junk at best buy will do.
However, if I had won the lottery, I would definitely take a mil (out of 10 or so after tax) and "blow it". Keep in mind, most of the stuff would be things I'd always wanted, but 10 years down the road, it'd be worth diddly.
Actually, as far as making the screen background "black", what I recall is they (SMS and NES) used the background as the main "body" of end characters. Then they'd use sprites for "movable" parts of that boss, as well as sprites for fireballs etc...
2 notable games that used this was Lifeforce (NES) and Altered Beast (SMS). I remember the NES better -- when you'd reach a boss in Lifeforce, your status bar and score at the bottom would disappear.
Yea, but looking at the fleets offered in this country this day and age.... I was trying to show that you can have a car with some ass to it and get "average" mpg.
Now, I could buy a more fuel effecient car. And I probably will for the next one. But if I have the choice over 30mpg highway/300ft/lb torque, and 35mpg/150ft/lb torque, and can afford either, I'd probably pick the higher ft/lb number.
Maybe you can answer my question then -- how do you make long runs for webcams?
Seems like a simple question. I understood that USB length was about 15 feet, so that's out of the question. I'd like something that runs about 50 feet (at most) so I can monitor my house. Not necessarily when I'm away, mostly to see if someone's at the front door.....
Of course, webcams are ideal since they're fairly inexpensive. What I don't need is a 300$ solution to a not so important problem. And I'm not afraid to hack something together either.....
Possibly, but after that, it doesn't scale well.

There are some awesome maps for UT that we play -- deathmatch in a small living room.
Except the players are the size of cockroaches...
Lotsa fun!

I agree.

I wouldn't think that they just take the cars that ran in the race off to the junkyard just yet...
And if they do, let me know. I'd like to get some solar panels for cheap (meaning free!)

If you happen to live in Detroit, I'd agree with you stating it's a "beaten path". Potholes everywhere.
Dear god.
Now you've got me scouring my collection to listen to this.....
Gotta watch the speaker cord things.

hmmm...
*ponders how to fit drum set into bathroom*
Ahem. Grabbing attention is not what the goatse guy does...
Oh wait. You meant the people looking at it?....

Of course they wouldn't sack you.
Because those who were responsible for the sacking, were sacked.
We oughta swap some stories then.
:)
I've recently been pulled into the loop on I3 at work, and they're looking to make me full time on I3 since I have a technical background...
There are some aspects about that company that I just would love to tear into

"My generation had Mortal Kombat"
I remember that. Wasn't the version for the SNES made so that there was no "blood?"
"Yea, we don't mind you kicking the crap out of your opponent. BUT GOD HELP YOU IF HE BLEEDS!"
Actually, I think your chances of being able to beat the crap out of someone if you lose at chess is lower. :)
Coming in at that time -- I wouldn't say you beat traffic. I'd say the traffic beat you!
The frame on my car's safer since everyone else's car crumples :)
here comes that negative karma.....
