Science is (obviously) not a constant in and of itself, but an evolving (heh) craft owing as much to chance, happenstance and luck as to true brilliance.

Many things have been held to be true, that have since been proven false. That doesn't mean that the time spent on those theories and ideas was pointless or useless... if you can see it all as an evolving body of work that generally moves towards a more accurate understanding of the way things work.

The game-play is fun (and actually quite funny), though there are some compatibility issues. I can still hear the sound the little imps made when you slapped them around... to say nothing of the Dark Mistress. It doesn't require epic level hardware to run, either. I've heard Startopia is a good member of the DK/DKII tradition, though I've never played it.

Battlezone II: Combat Commander ('99 - Pandemic Studios). Again with the graphics and the testing and the time. The game play is phenomenal, and will run on older hardware. The ability to control a single craft (FPS-style), or be the commander in charge of base installations, supply and overall strategy (RTS-style) was is still amazing and allowed for hours and hours (and hours and hours) of LAN gaming.

I don't think either has much in the way of ongoing community support, which is sad, as both stand in my mind as great games, always deserving to be installed

Then there's Ultima III and Ultima IV. The fact that my original ~20 year old 5.25" diskettes still run on an Apple //e Enhanced absolutely and without doubt qualifies them as "standing the test of time."

Sauron was not "dead" as a previous poster stated. He had, however, placed a great part of his power (his life-essence, so to speak) into the Ring. He didn't have enough power leftto forge another ring... at least not one with potency enough to rule the other Rings of Power.

Part of the reason the Ring in question was able to gain dominion over the other rings was that it was forged in secrecy. While Celebrimbor and the Mirdain of Eregion were forging the 3, the 7 and the 9, Sauron was forging the One. Since he had a part in the 7 and the 9, he was able to more or less directly control the bearers of those. Even though he did not have a direct hand in the 3, the One was of sufficient power to have influence. Such power could only be used once.

The longer the movie, the fewer showings (even taking into account multiple screens - there's a lot of movies competing for screens), and the fewer showings, the less money in tickets and concessions.

Interesting, except that by attacking immediately, the Rohirrim don't have time to come to the aid of Minas Tirith, and Aragorn likely never takes the Umbar fleet. Without those two things coming together at the Battle of Pelennor Fields, Gondor would almost certainly fall to Sauron's forces, which were already too strong to take head to head. I say "almost" b/c nothing is truly certain, but my thoughts are that it is far far more likely.

  24. Re:Special editions on LOTR: Two Towers Extended Edition Reviewed · · Score: 3, Insightful

    Absolutely agreed.

Given that Sauron has a sizeable army at Minas Morgul.
Given that Minas Morgul is within marching distance to Osgiliath.
Given that Sauron now knows the location of the ring in Osgiliath, on his very borders through the Nazgul that Frodo encountered there.
Given that Sauron wants the ring back.

Seems to me that Sauron would do two things at this point.
    1. Send more forces to Osgiliath to secure the ring where it is.
    2. Keep forces at Minas Morgul to guard the pass instead of sending them into battle at the Pelennor Fields.

Tolkien has Sauron think that Saruman had the Ring, and was distracted by Aragorn's use of the Palantir. He had no reason to think it was near at hand. Jackson gave him that reason. Why worry at all about Gondor when the Ring is right there? With it back on his hand, Gondor is inconsequential.

  25. No Combat Experience - Taking it too far on Non-Combat Character Development In RPGs? · · Score: 1

As I don't like awarding experience ONLY for combat, as so many cRPG's tend to do, nor do I like the idea of awarding NO experience for combat. Seems to me that experience should be awarded based on task completed. Finishing off an opponent is, at least to my mind, a task. What I'd like to see implemented is a system that awards experience for just about everything, with the experience awarded for a given task weighted towards the class most suited to the task at hand. Fighter classes get slightly more experience for combat, rogue classes get slightly more experience for detecting, setting and disarming traps, picking pockets and assassinations, spell-casters classes get slightly more experience for successfully casting spells, bards will slightly more experience for social tasks, and so on.

Combat, like anything else, is a challenge that should be rewarded... especially when the class you chose to play is geared heavily towards it.
