  1. Re:PR reasons, NOT national security on US Declassifications Delayed. Infrastructure Classification to follow? · · Score: 2, Insightful

When the time limit was set at 25 years, people knew that the information released could be embarrasing to the government, but they didn't think it would matter anymor. After 25 years, they assumed that nobody at the top levels of government then would still have a visible role. Any really dumb stuff (like trying to kill Castro with an exploding cigar) could be blamed on people who were dead or at least retired.

Then Dubya got "elected". We expected him to dig up members of his father's and Reagan's cabinets, but Gerald Ford's? Most of the members of the current administration have been active in the government for over 30 years. And as another poster mentions, the records from the CIA while the Elder Bush ran it are just turning 25.

As you said, there are older methods that worked fine. But if troops are under fire, they may not be thinking about double checking their position.

Scenario 2) You buy enterprise level database software from Microsoft, one of the largest corporations on the planet. They assure you that everything is legit and that you can do what you want with the software as a foundation of your small business.

In scenario 1, you're an idiot. Just because the guy lied to you doesn't get you off the hook. You should have realized that things were fishy.

In Scenario 2, you were acting in good faith. You have an expectation that a giant company is going to handle these kind of legal issues for you before you hand then 5 to 100 thousand dollars for a few CDs worth of software.

So what other huge corporations that I deal with will require me to pay a lawyer 600 bucks before I do any business with again?
