Scientists will keep a constant vigil on the team via cameras erected in each of the facility's three modules. Those who survive more than 100 days will earn a $20,000 reward.
Is this a russian attempt at the Big Brother/Survivor franchise?
Of course only anecdotal, but I've been involved in teaching homeschoolers a few years ago, also have some relatives who homeschooled. My impression was quite the opposite, that the kids had better social skills than other kids their age, since they easily socialized not only with kids outside their age group, but with adults as well.
But yeah, it depends on the environment created for them. I can easily imagine overprotective and even micromanaging parents who will not do anything for their offspring's integration into the world once they leave the nest. (Which is a false analogy, since one is inside the world - or should be - even when you are still in the nest.)
.... oh yeah, and I am a would-be sex symbol multi-millionaire with a wit to rival George Bernard Shaw's. Maybe I should also set up a chatroom or Facebook group for like-minded Would-Be Witty SSMMs so we can plan how to bed blondes and make more millions.
Now if you can't spot the flaw in there you should look up "would-be" in a dictionary.
Hehehe, you're right, but at least I'm not from the USA. Where I'm from, the major sports events (yeah I had to google....) are numbered by the year - even when some people here rank their importance on par with the world wars.
I suppose one can haggle about numbering of rulers and popes, copyright years in movies, paragraph numbering, clock faces, oxidation numbers in chemistry, and even the inclusion of the glyphs in Unicode. I claim that the exceptions prove the rule, and that's the story I stick to:-)
Then again, it might not be THOSE hormones.... I know of a couple of hormonal imbalances that can distort reality quite a bit. Haven't encountered them in a male though.
Janis Ian claimed quite the opposite in an article from all the way back in 2002: It's the "biggest selling artists", if anyone, who are to be concerned about sharing - the "average" band/artist hardly receives money from their label but gets a lot more exposure (and thus income) from shared music.
Then again, that is more-or-less also the argument behind the existence of the Baen Free Library in the first place, where this article is hosted. Go check it out if you like SF.
(Disclaimer: I've carried a 9mmP for most of my adult life, even taking it to bed (which has proven useful at least once earlier this year, when I got a break-in at 2am and miraculously woke up with one of the perps still approaching me in my bed)).
Recently the crime in my neighborhood (upper middle class) has gotten worse and worse. To give just one example, 2 weeks ago a residence was robbed by 6 well-dressed males, armed with AK47s, 10 minutes in and out, in broad daylight with neighbors watching. Many crimes of such a nature are executed with military precision, which leads one to suspect some form of military training. A detective living in the neighborhood told a residents' meeting just last night that these career criminals go on advanced driving courses and firearm courses. (Un)fortunately our firearm law has not allowed ordinary citizens ownership of full-auto weapons and has become even more restrictive in recent years. So much for the equality doctrine.
That said, another anecdote of a recent incident that came out last night was of a 17/18-year old girl busy studying at home, alone. She saw suspects lifting the security gate to their home off its rails, grabbed her mom's handgun and ran out, confronting the suspects - which luckily ran off (it could have turned out the other way much too easily).
Moral of the stories? You don't necessarily get very far with just a gun alone. With apologies to Al Capone, a smile might be sufficient to go with it in your society, in other societies perhaps not...
A prototype Scheffler reflector is being constructed in India for use in a solar crematorium. This 50 square meter reflector will generate temperatures of 700 deg C (1,292 deg F) and displace 200-300 kg of firewood used per cremation.
Not that I'm normally mean or anything, but what's the use of a subtly insulting joke if those it insults, don't understand what the terms that one employs mean? That's as good a reason as any to use the more generally understood and colloquial term.
And then there are some that thought that post was all about statistics.... >:->
Why are the people in charge always so fucking stupid and clueless?
Perhaps because the people who put them in charge (being a democracy and all that) are even more stupid and clueless? After all, half of the population have below-average IQs.
What I don't understand is: How does someone so stupid have so much money?
I think that, in general, the more intelligent people are, the more they understand the impact their actions now may have in the long term (years from now). You may not have a lot of cash laying around, but you may have invested most of it in things that will be beneficial in the long(er) term: education, a car, a house, retirement savings, etc.
Well, at least this method offers less excuse to post gross pictures on Idle. So I'm all for it. Extra points for being able to give the bank machine the middle finger (yes, I've actually read the article).
... and probably no blackjack either.

How on earth ... err, I mean, off earth ... do you "hang clothes" in space?
It's interesting that South Africa (which has a large coastline) draws water from Lesotho (which is completely landlocked by South Africa).
I play Solitaire, you insensitive clod.
If this will close the market for, erm, certain products that are marketed through spam, I'm all for it.
I guess as long as humans (and their pets, and their garbage) are tasty, human-adverse crocs are a pipe dream.

"Hoist Hurl Hell" might find its own special place inside the general field of motion sickness.

... and you'll probably use the Roman alphabet for that spelling too.
(At least we don't use their numbering system any more....)
.... How does this influence the strength of the Reality Distortion Field??

Lots and lots of black monoliths. Though whether they where made of concrete, or even if they are concrete, can be debated.

As compared to "normal" cremation where the corpse is held at 760 deg to 1150 deg C (1400 deg to 2100 deg F) for about 2 hours. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crematorium#Burning_and_ashes_collection)
If I can't have a CELL phone in my prison CELL, what's the use????
One has to wonder when Google will start to offer Search and Replace functionality...
;-)
Thank you.

There's a Wikipedia article on Deferred gratification.

It said something about "Green" in the summary. Not that I read it or anything.....
