Texas is a very bad place for auto insurance. The prices are sky high at least here in Houston. Much of the cost comes down to it being cheaper to pay the person off. Once people began to realize this it just became a feeding frenzy. I had a very minor accident in years ago. Woman slamme don her brakes in front of me and I almost avoided plowing into her with my van. I managed to barely clip the rental car she was in. Like a 4in diameter dent. I got to listen to her talk abotu how she was just returning the rental ca from her last accident. She was talking about how she was gonna get paid for this, etc. My insurance just paid. Go figure. We really need to adopt no fault insurance here. Would save us a fortune. But the insurance companies like thier high rates and thay make big "donations" to the politicians. So we the people are generally screwed.

Now how they come up with who they ask is another question. They sure seem to pick some losers. I'm so sick of American Idol and Survivor and such I could vomit.

This ws done years ago. My '85 Fiero GT proudly boats a complete plastic body skin. This was reintroduced by Saturn, they claimed it was a revolutionary idea. Hah. I think they were trying to get away from the bad press the Fiero got. I have heard no car burns quite like a Fiero, however I don't know about Saturns. I believe they use a difrent plastic. Also the roofs are steel if I remember correctly. And for those that think this means the car is lighter, not so. You need to see a Fiero without the skins on. They are not light cars. The other advantage is rust. I think that works against car companies. They like their new disposable cars. They want you to trade in your car before you pay it off. Everyone makes money but you.

Actually many people do all of the things you have listed. There are many reasons people don't fix thier own car, build thier own house or grow their own food. Not always because of lack of knowledge. I can generally fix my own car, but the one I drive now is under warranty. So I am going to let someone else fix it at no cost under warranty. I'm not yet ready to build the house I plan on retiring in. So I have a crappily built tract home. When it comes time I will at the very least very closely supervise the constuction of my house and likely do many things myself. I don't grow my own food.. but many people still have vegetable gardens. Granted.. not enough to feed them year round.. but it can still have an impact.

However, the number of people that can do all these things is diminishing. Modern society tells us we must specialize into some very narrow field of knowledge. I'm not supposed to be able to fix my car, my computer and install my kitchen sink. Business today rewards narrow minds. You are expected to fit into a very easily defined job with a very specific skillset. People with broad skills and abilities aren't necessarily rewarded.
