MS doesn't own Epic so I am sure they will still make server versions for Linux. Makes sense since a lot of sites are running the Linux server versions anyway. The deal is a publishing deal so that means that the client versions that MS will publish will be X/PC only.
Actually I must agree here. Normally I would be against anyone installing something on my PC without my permission but a console is just an appliance and it just needs to "work". I am sure we will see a lot more "normal" household appliances updating their software/firmware in the future. If something like this happens on Star Trek we all scream "Cool!", if it happens on XBox we all scream "Foul!".
If I drive my car at 250 km/h I only have to pay 500$ if they catch me. How on earth can somebody get away with $2000 of fines for "stealing" music? How many CDs is that? 200? So does that mean that the RIAA thinks that all file "stealers" would have bought 200 CDs during the last couple of years? I dunno... I barely have collected 100 CDs during the last 15 years.
Not bad... maybe this is a good way for the fat RIAA people to finance their big cars.
Look... apparently just mentioning Halo brings out the trolls, this is about people making funny/cool/artistic games with 3D engines (it doesn't matter if it is Halo or not). So stop hammering on the game and look at this post the way it is meant to be. A lot of non-computer people are doing really great stuff with tools that are available now (not 10 years ago). There is a whole new form of expression waiting on the net. Some/. people need to look past their nose.
I don't agree. C# feels like a very limited script-like language when you are an experienced C++ person. Frankly I don't think many experienced C++ programmers will switch to C#. The people MS is targetting with C# are the VB crowd. C# is way to limited, static and "old-style OO" for C++ people to switch.
Been there, seen it, got the T-shirt. Go to Hong Kong and you can buy GCs with external attached CD/HDs so you can play "backup" games. Anything gets hacked... there are just so many people working on this, that it is just a matter of time.
Like some people have said before, I don't really know how this is going to help the "Linux" community. It will just paint them as illegal hackers that blackmail people and allow people to run pirated software. This is exactly the imagin we DO NOT want if Linux wants to continue to gain ground in the server/big companies market. There is nothing worse for a big IT department than to look like a hobbyist computer geek product.
Philosophically there is no difference between silicon and biological matter. If you look at it from a pure philosophical standpoint, we are all (biological) simulations running on the computer that is space-time. The universe in one big simulation and the program is the underlying physics engine.
Not really. HL2 and Halo 2 have different aims. Halo 2 wants to recreate a believable battlefield and does that better then anything else and HL2 wants to create a believable world. Both games have incredible AI and physics but use them in different ways. I am sure you would like use that swinning beam in Halo 2 but it would make sense to do this in H2 (of course as games evolve all this will be included in *any* game). The battlefield and immersion of the Halo 2 battle is stunning.... the HL2 physics and AI is stunning too... both games are about the same level on average but both games have areas that are better then the other. Don't judge so easily without thinking or explaining your opinion.
Good work and looks cool but some new car manufacturers already offer this kind of setup. If you buy a Toyota landcruiser you can buy an optional XBox entertainment center. It is a flat screen that slides down the middle of the car and offers people in the back the ability to watch DVDs and do some serious gaming:)
I might go crazy in my Landcruiser pretending to drive a Warthog when I hear the Halo soundtrack. Yehaaaaa... crash... flip!!!!
ROFL.. you haven't lived in France I presume. I am sure a lot of people will agree with me that it is a much better country to live in than the US. You know.. extreme Capitalism combined with some hardcore nationalism isn't always a good thing.
That is because in the future, people *will* be more sensible and "liberal" and money, power, war and greed will not be so dominant. It is that or mass exctinction in the near future. So in a way this "leftwing propaganda" as you call is a valid and realistic view of the future. Logically it is the only direction humanity can take if it does not want to self destruct.
It seem like every week we have a post about XBox hacking? Why? Consoles have always been hacked. Apparently hacking the XBox is "cool" and is a good thing because it "hurts" Microsoft. 95% of those people installing mod-chips are still pirates and they hurt the sofware industry in general. There is nothing "cool" about copying software.
...who needs enemies? Does anything this guy says still have relevance after his earlier "predictions". Anyway... what does he have to do with Linux and free software anyway??? He just hates MS and will use anything against it. He doesn't care if it is Linux or any other OS/platform/programming language (as long as it is not a Database of course). Maybe I should make the bold statement that MySQL will wipe out Oracle! We should have a "Crazy Ellison" icon on/. Who is with me?:)
This is very good news. It gives the current consoles time to build some quality titles and gives consumers some breathing space. Sony has a good installed base and MS will be happy with this as well. They can continue to build Live and develop some good franchises. Nintendo might not be so happy but maybe the cUbe will pick up in the future. Sony also needs to think about their real online network that they will probably launch with PS3. PS2 hardware was a big mistake so Sony better make sure they have a good platform with good development support and libraries this time.
"Wouldn't something like LD_LIBRARY_PATH in Linux fix the whole darned thing?" and with that remarks your whole post lost it's credibility.
Anyway back on topic. While I am in favour of people in school learning Linux a good IT education is based on flexibility and knowledge of more that one system. People need to be able to work in Linux AND in windows. Just like a lot of Universities are teaching multiple programming languages (usually with one language as their main thing). Since when is diversity a bad thing??? By becoming fanatical Linux *only* people we will just make the world a more boring place and our IT people will be really ignorant fools.
Seriously.... our local energy company has started to buy back electricity. So you don't need batteries any more to store your solar captured energy. You can just buy some solar pannels and sell back the energy they generate to decrease your energy bill. No use for batteries. I think this is an excellent idea!
Anyway... very good points and I am sure that is just what the Powers that be are doing. Is it really possible to enforce this in a digital (connected) world. Why does it takes ages for the big companies to realise they *cannot* protect digital material... people will break it sooner or later. They should focus on making this content cheaper so people don't bother to look for a way around it. This is IMHO the only way we can go in the future. Much cheaper access to content. These greedy principles that we see emerging today are just left-overs of the old economy and during the next century companies will hopefully realise it cannot be done this way.
Yeah I must agree on this one. But I don't think/. people are that gullible, a lot of people are not believing the hype. The big question is... will the mainstream press and general public believe the hype??? My guess is they will and we will be stuck with an inferior console outselling everything all over again. Hype sells! (the Romans found this out and it looks like it is still valid). I am sure the new MS and Nintendo (if they ever make a new one) machine will be more powerfullusing believable technology. All credit goes to Sony's PR department... maybe SOny even spends more on PR then on R&D;) Can anybody still remember the images we got from the PS2 hype press conference (the walking girl for example)? I rest my case.
Well most hard-core anime lovers wouldn't touch a dubbed movie with a 10 ft. pole.

· Score: 1
Yeah I agree... nothing very negative about Linux IMHO (certainly not "Linux is dead"). I think a lot of people are getting paranoid. I wouldn't even have read it, if I hadn't had that caption on/. Please do not post such stupid headlines in the future. What is next "Bill Gates has eaten my baby!".
Reading users experiences, this game is a a piece of sh*t. Don't waste your time on this... these guys have no experience making this kind of game (no experience making *real* RPGS IMHO) so they start where EQ, AC and UO were 3 years ago. Better wait for the real next generation games coming out soon. AC2 goes into beta this summer and I am sure it will be a 1000x better. Of course you can wait for FF XXX Online : Finally done right
Nintendo in second place? Very funny.. GC is already suffering from the "no games" syndrome that plagued the N64. PS2 is seen by many people as very inferior hardware. Thanx to XBox the GC (and soon PS2) has gone down in price. The console battle is only beginning guys... IMHO XBox looks to be a strong contender. We will see in 2 years....

To keep all those kids from hogging the consoles. Nobody would play longer than a couple of minutes ;)
