movies are binary encoded information and information wants to be free

Information isn't sentient and as such, can't want anything. It doesn't want to be free, it doesn't care either way.

The only people who want it to be free are the cheap bastards who never produced anything that other people would want to spend money on. Basically, the only people that believe information wants to be free are parasites who use that as justification for stealing stuff they have no right to, such as pirating movies.

Far from trashing the PSP. The fact is Sony used it as part of their convergence strategy, and tried to make it do everything, from playing movies to music, etc. Claiming that gaming on the system was a priority is incorrect. The iPhone competes more directly with the PSP than the DS because of the lack of focus on gaming.

The only way the iPhone can compete with the DS or PSP is to do what Nintendo and Sony do, make gaming a priority and get high-quality game developers on board.

When did Sony make gaming a priority on the PSP?

Maybe it is because, unlike Sony, Nintendo didn't shoot themselves in the foot in every stage of development and marketing and actually figured out what consumers want, in both the handheld and console markets.

The MD-11 (that Boeing assumed rights to) and the 717 both have this behavior. I believe the 777 series does this as well (since the accident in Texas was not exactly a distant memory when the 777 development started).

I had a long conversation with one of my friends about this. In the military, the pilot always has absolute command. In the commercial world, certain circumstances dictate that the computer overrides the pilot). The different philosophies surprised me, but I guess it makes sense. That is why it stuck out in my mind.

Airbus's design philosophy is that the airplane knows best, and Boeing's is that the pilot knows best. I tend to agree with Boeing.

Not quite correct. There are some planes in Boeing's inventory that will assume full command over the aircraft (overriding the pilot) in certain situations, such as a wind shear.

  16. Re:trust the machines. on Airbus Plans to Expand Cockpit Automation · · Score: 2, Interesting

We will have too trust our lives more and more too machines, we already do it in hospitals...

Aircraft have been overriding pilots' intentions for years in specific instances. Computers can process and act faster than humans can to a situation that can be fatal in a matter of seconds. For instance, flight computers have *instantly* taken control of an aircraft that is either taking off or landing and it hits a wind shear. Those couple of seconds when a pilot's brain is trying to figure out what the hell just happened could easily be fatal that close to the ground. I know at least a couple models have this on them, people just don't realize it.

This has been around for more than eight years. This is only news because they are expanding its abilities.

On a side note, there was an article in The Wall Street Journal today about software glitches on aircraft. It focuses on a 777, but also alludes to some Airbus problems. Basically, the 777 flight software sent the computer conflicting data which sent it on a rollercoaster type ride, pushing it almost to stall. Airbus has been having a few problems with the onboard computers completely shutting down all the cockpit instruments/lighting/displays except one. Fun times!

I'm gonna have to ask you to clarify that. Define "hard". Keep in mind that "takes a long time" isn't hard, it's annoying. Something that requires skill is hard. Something that just anyone can do over a long period of time isn't hard, it's boring.

That is the same crap a bunch of EQ2 players think is hard. Needing to wait days or hours in realtime for something that can be killed in 30secs isn't 'hard', it is completely assinine. Hard requires some kind of skill, not how much you can ignore real life and how much caffeine or other stimulants you can pump into your body to try to stay awake through the ultimate in boring.

If a mob is spawned that you need when you get close, but completely devastates you so that you have to try multiple times to kill - that is hard, challenging, and fun. If the challenge is in how long you can wait in one place for something to happen, that isn't hard or fun.

One thing people constantly say is that finishing a long (timesink-wise) quest or getting a super-rare spawn to advance a quest gives them a sense of accomplishment. I don't think people realize there is a difference between the feelings of 'relief' and 'accomplishment'. The feeling of finally not having to wait for a long-spawn or other stupid timesink is a lot closer to that of relief than accomplishment.
