I think I would rather have out of memory error then having the computer waiting for swap. Fail fast is good. I don't have enough apps running to run out of memory usually, and when my system does start swapping, it usually means something is wrong anyway. It would be nice for it to just crash then wait 10 minutes for it to finish swapping.
Since I don't use MS Windows, I'm not exactly sure what the issue is. But our customers are having a heck of a time making PGP work for them to receive our emails. We are required to send encrypted email because they have personal customer information. But our customers have constant issues decrypting the emails and setting up private/public keys for us to use to send the emails to them (initial setup).
On my Mac, I installed the plugin and it works.
You would think that since it's been around for so long, more than 10 years, that it would be easier to use and more people would be using it. But that's just not the case.
It was so bad that we had to build our own web interface (with SSL) so our customers could read their customers emails.
The hard part of this problem is getting MS Windows users to use email encryption. Your pretty much screwed if you use MS LookOut. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
I would encrypted all my email if people that I'm sending to could read it. I would refuse any email that is not encrypted if I could get people to encrypt their email.
I would love to switch my ISP to IPv6, but most of the hardware in use doesn't support it. From the customer to the gateway. Soon as I see everyone with support, I'll make the switch. But I don't want to create extra work for support and spend tons more money on hardware.
I run small ISP with web hosting. I only have 100 email accounts and my server get pounded by SPAM. I get a million spam emails a month going through it. It's completely nuts. Why do I want to waste all my bandwidth on spam email. Let Google deal with it, that's what I say.
I just don't understand why this can't be fixed. Why does ISP's let this happen? Why do people let this happen?
This is just so utterly ridiculous to me that it actually makes me sick to think about it. The shear amount of waste being dealt is just insane. And it's not just Email, it's regular postal mail too. The US Mail System is so clogged up with junk that it amazes me that my paycheck gets to me each month. Every single day my mail box is full of, basically, junk that goes straight into the fire.
When I ran my ISP, I was constantly telling people to quit. They would stop for like two or three days then back to killing the network with movies and music. I started just turning them off and telling them to go somewhere else. Of course, there was no where else to go, so they had to go back to dial up.
If they don't want to follow the rules, then to hell with them. I didn't allow p2p on my network, and it's my network to do what I want with. They could just go out and buy their own T1 and pay $700 a month for sorta high speed.
I told them when they called, I told them when I hooked them up, and I told them when they did it the first few times. It's not like they didn't know, and it's not like I ever said unlimited do what you want internet access. It was a shared local network.
If they didn't let him keep the money, he wouldn't have it to pay the lawyers for the upcoming lawsuits, fines, restitution, and all that. You know that the lawyers are going to bleed him dry.
Your right about the unlimited part, but it also states in their TOS that using bandwidth for illegal downloads, IE pirated music and movies, is not allowed. So when they have 10% of their users using 90% of the bandwidth to illegally download music, movies, and other illegal content they have a right to do something about it and are well within their contract with their users to do so.
The corporations hold back innovation to maximize their profit on current outdated tech. Their share holders demand it so.
Apple is moving forward, and so is OSS. But there is only so much they can do when they are in danger of being sued at every turn.
If I were as rich as Bill Gates, I would buy an island and get all the smart people I could to live there. Then I would build the future unencumbered by the rest of the world's greed for money and power. And this island would become the richest, most powerful place on earth.
I purchased a USB2.0 1TB drive the other day that didn't work at all for me. So I pulled the drives out and build a FreeNAS.org server. Works perfect now.
I'm buying one the day it comes out. I've been waiting for a Mac Tablet for years now. There have been some really good mockups on the net. I like the one with the base station and external keyboars/mouse/monitor. That would be cool.
"For example, we've got a 30+ mile per hour windstorm going. My cable's still on. Don't know how a dish would be faring. But that doesn't mean I'm happy with Comcast."
I regularly get 30-50MPH winds where I live and both my DirecTV and WiFi still work without a problem. Also, rain and heavy snow does not disrupt my signals.
I gave my wife a MacBookPro, and I still have to do tech support. But it's a lot easier to fix the problems now. I don't have to nuke the system, restore from backup. I just fix the problem and off she goes. And when the problem is real bad, she goes to the Apple store and it gets fixed without my help.
"Even then, trees and rain cause severe signal loss."
Really? Rain causes severe signal loss? I can see trees causing loss, but Rain?
I used to run a WISP, but I'm in the desert. We have snow storms that are so thick that you can't see across the street, yet the WiFi from a mile away works perfect. Dust storms, wind storms, rain storms, nothing stops it.
But, we have our radios out side the houses with 12DBi panels attached to them and ethernet going into the home. Most put a router on the other end of the ethernet and rebroadcast to their home. We have some connections up to three miles without any problems...well.. except that WiFi sucks ass.
I would take DSL or FiOS over WiFi any day. Nothing make WiFi suck more than some kid running Bit Torrent and talking on VoIP. Even the packet shaper doesn't help (m0n0wall/PFsense).
I finally gave up on Wireless and just use a T1 (no other high speed out here). I co-locate a few servers to pay for it.
I have found that my customers don't want me to block spam. I would get complaints from customers not getting their mail from hosts that are being blocked. So I use Spamassassin to tag the spam and filters on my clients to delete it. Yep, I have to process all that spam and yep the customers have to download all that spam, but I don't get any phone calls anymore.

You can always run your own DNS server on a slice somewhere using MyDNS. I've had really good luck with it for over 5 years.

Strange. My Skype calls only take about 19-30kbps, even with five people on the line. I have a 4.5mbps line. Is there something wrong with your Skype?

I like how they have a source control conflict on the home page currently. Work FASTER! *crack whip*

I prefer FreeBSD, Nginx, Mongrel, Ruby, Merb/Rails myself. But I don't do simple web pages, I write applications.

What's the point of being the richest man in the world if you can't buy countries and governments?
I'm getting 66/100 in Minefield.

So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
I guess you've never heard of Sharks with lasers. Bwhahahahah, bring it on.
"It could then offer to pair you up with someone else doing exactly the same thing who might be able to help you out."
Just what we need. A bunch of disgruntled Windows users talking to each other and forming solutions.
I mean, really, this is just what we need.
