  1. OS X on Essential System Administration, 3rd Edition · · Score: 1

It is revealing that OS X is evidently not covered in this book, especially since in many ways it is so different from other Unixes and since there are many reasons to expect that OS X users would *need* such a book.

I don't believe for one second the emphasis was on Linux because it made for a better acronym. Why not go with "AMP" ? Sticking "Linux" on the cover just helps the publishers capitalize on the Linux buzz, which makes me immediately wary of the book.

  4. Re:And as we know... on Apple Plans to Purchase Universal Music · · Score: 1

Free giveaways out of Universal's catalouge could be an incredible boost to sale of music-related hardware like the iPod

How exactly is this going to be an incredible boost to iPod sales when the meatiest part of Universal's catalogue is *already* available for download ?? You can't sell people things that people are already taking for free.

  5. Re:One working label? on Apple Plans to Purchase Universal Music · · Score: 2, Insightful

Maybe Apple will be happy when their whole catalog is up on Kazaa for download. Maybe.

It's easy to take a liberal approach to the whole MP3 issue when the catalogs in question don't belong to you. It sure would be interesting to see how they behave when the ripping and mixing and burning affects properties they own, and not properties owned by someone else.

But I have to wonder whether Apple really would do this in the first place. They're a computer company, scratching for a small piece of market share. The annals of business literature is replete with stories of companies who expanded into areas outside their core competencies and got squashed. Just look at what happened to Seagram when *they* got involved with Vivendi/Universal.

I'm still saving for this bundle which is one of the highest rated remotes on hifi-remotes.com.

I am not connected in any way with BlueDo, just been impressed by good store reviews and the great customer service I've experienced when I've made various inquiries.

Is Justin there ?". Everyone in the theater looked at each other, stunned.

I can understand someone forgetting to turn off their cell phones. But being so f*cking ignorant that you would place a call, when you could easily and freely walk to the lobby ? I say bully to the theaters who want to block cell phone signals.

You mean the controversial 40% statistic means that 40% of such developers work primarily for Linux ? Isn't the flipside of this supposedly rosy story that 60% of programmers working in such companies are presumably NOT developing for Linux ? Hot damn, if this isn't a case of picking your sample to suit your theory, I don't know what is. I can just IMAGINE the vitriole that would be directed at a study reporting that, say, "a significant number of developers at companies developing applications for Windows are primarily developing for Windows."

Thinking back to the PCs of 5-years ago, there seems to be *much* bigger advances in the PC world then the incremental increases in speeds that iMac users have had to content themselves with. PC company's CAN'T sell essentially the same computer for 5 years because the market will leave them behind. Apple, on the other hand, makes and controls its own market so this can never happen - even if maybe it should.

It might not mean much in terms of the *ames* that s/he designed, but what more could define this *person* than his/her struggling with this issue ? Heck, even the book "High Score" dealt with the issue more. I'm just shocked that a profile wouldn't cover one of the more interesting points of a person's life. Imagine a book about Clinton's presidency which only mentions Monica-gate in a few paragraphs.

  23. I love the Audigy Ex on Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Reviewed · · Score: 4, Interesting

I bought the Audigy Ex (the first one) a few months ago. The Audigy 2 had just come out, but besides the fact that I got a great deal on mine, the external version had still not been released.

I didn't really care about the sound features that much, so I don't know it stacks up in that department, but what I was really interested in was being able to move all my cables from the back of my PC to my desktop. It drove me absolutely batty having to adjust the headphone volume by either reaching around to the back of the PC, or by running the mixer app. And it drove me crazy having to crawl under my desk to plug/unplug my headphones. Now I can plug in and adjust the volume with barely a reach.

I do wish that there was a master volume control on the panel, though, and I also wish that the damn cables attaching the external panel to the back of the PC wasn't so rigid - makes it really hard to position things. I understand that the Audigy 2 fixes at least the latter problem; I can't tell about the former because there doesn't seem to be specs on the Audigy2 Ex on the creative website.

The final wish on my list would be for them to have put a USB hub in the unit...oh well...

  24. Market Share != developers on Debunking Linux-Windows Market Share Myths · · Score: 5, Interesting

So 40 % of developers "focus" on Linux. Even if we accept that statistic at face value (which is itself ironic in an article which seems to be at least partly about dubious statistics), it doesn't mean what I think the author intends it to mean.

There are a disproportionate number of developers who work on Sun boxes relative to the number of Sun boxes in the whole computing market, for instance. That just means Sun machines are being used in situations where there is more custom development work going on, and in situations where companies need and can afford to pay for more people to maintain code. The proportion of Sun developers doesn't speak at all to the broader market share of Sun machines vis a vis Windows machines.

I always get a laugh when I see an article about the misuse and misinterpration of statistics, which trots out its own to-be-misused-and-interpreted statistics. What's that old saw about lies and damn lies ?

They can say whatever they want, but if people are buying these to listen to stuff at opposite (or even not-so-opposite) parts of their house, they are going to be *sorely* disappointed.
