Yeah, except that Be went for Microsoft WELL after they should have and in a climate that was not as hostile towards Microsoft as it is now. Were there entire governments telling Microsoft "Thanks but no thanks!" at the time Be tried to go after Microsoft? No. Did Be go after Microsoft when they were _already_ on the downward slope towards oblivion? If I remember correctly, yes they did since it was being mentioned when they were bought out. Did Be have more and more Fortune 500 companies considering alternatives to the desktop so they would not be tied into huge licensing costs associated with dealing with a convicted monopolist? No. Did Be have in place the current ruling against Microsoft that specifically concerns tying in other apps (in this case, a search engine) into the OS and leveraging their dominant position in anti-trust/anti-competitive practices? No.
Simply put, Google _KNOWS_ ahead of time that precedent has been set regarding the entangling of apps with the OS in such a way as to force out competition and can, as soon as it is mentioned by Microsoft OR shown to be tied into the OS, use the anti-trust button. Be were playing a late-game strategy to take down the giant and I applauded them their effort, but Google can play a forward defense and cover their ass by keeping a close eye on MS and their new search engine/portal. If MS so much as thinks about entangling it with the OS, Google can bring suit. If Google can capture a large and dominant share of the market being a WEB based and OS independant application then there is absolutely no need for Microsoft to bundle the search engine with/into/etc. the operating system. That negates the "level playing field" - hell, it blows it out of the water - or anything close to it by using their illegal monopoly to take over the search engine market. If they deliver a better product by putting up a web-based search engine that is in no way tied into the operating system - great! fantastic! But, and be honest here, do you think Microsoft is going to put their search engine out as a web-based app only and not tie it into the operating system as close to the kernel as they can? I doubt it./rant
Oh yeah - Google is, what, 100? 1000? times more financially solvent than Be ever was so they will not tank into bankruptcy should they persue this.
There is a very easy fix for this: If Microsoft is greedy enough to default ALL internet searches through its own search engine technology/portal by including the search tied into the OS then all Google has to do is mention the magic words "Anti-trust". Yes, I know that MS received a slap on the wrist for their past actions but the growing tide of people seeing MS for what they are, including governments all over the world, will react to another blatant grab for market share (aka world domination) very negatively. I can easily see questions/comments like "This doesn't need to be tied into the OS to work correctly or efficiently. Just look at Google's system of plug-ins that work extremely efficiently. Can you, Microsoft, tell the court why you need to tie in the search engine to the OS instead of offering a choice via a plug-in? Can you be telling the court that you're programmers are not as efficient or intelligent as those working for Google?"
Seriously folks, anti-trust is the button to use against MS including a search engine embedded in the OS. Another nail in the coffin as it were since it will clearly point out that MS can no longer compete without resorting to anti-trust/anti-competitive practices... IE, MS can no longer innovate in the face of competition.
Maybe you missed that little button on Firebird titled "Plug-in FAQ"? I was having a couple of issues with one or two plug-ins and after reading this and following a couple of steps - no problems! Here is the link to the plug-in FAQ. Plus they list all all the OSX known problems so they ARE working on solving them. If there is something missing from their list, bugtraq it to them.
Yeah, which I have never understood for one simple reason: There are more 13 year old (being general here, not picking on 13 year olds - or crackers/hackers) crackers out there than there are people developing the copy protection. If you add up all the available time, energy, processing power, and intelligence of the people who want to crack games versus the companies who make the games+copy protection the crackers win every time. Back in the days of Commodore 64/128 one could get 0 or -1 day wares for games. Yeah, you could get it before the game company officially released it - and without copy protection.
In the end, they would be better served by using the time and energy spent including copy protections to make BETTER content, more open ability for the game players (as in NWN modules and Doom level editors) to keep the games fresh and accessible, and less buggy first releases/less patches. The question is... will they realize this?
I'm thinking the almighty (quick) dollar is too strong. The game companies have forgotten to look to the long-term. How long has Myst been out? Doom? How many people still play these games and others because of content/editors/modules/fun? Wow, amazing isn't it?
And while they're at it they better get the same people for C3P0....
Yeah, I would say they need to considering Anothony Daniels is THE reason C3PO is as fucking funny as he is. I have met Anthony in real life (at DragonCon in 1998 and 2000 or 2001) and he is just as funny in person as he is while performing. So, yeah, the original actors would be best to have back. Don't you agree?
If the pages you are looking at are in Italian/Polish/whatever language then why not use "The Fish" to translate. It won't be perfect but it should give you an idea of what they are doing...
Why, oh why dear Lord, do "the people" seem to be stuck on Democrat vs. Republican? If enough of the slashdot population that are in America and can vote would educate 5 of our friends about what is going on and present it in reference to them and then get them to educate 3-5 of their friends and (you get the picture) and ALL of these newly educated _voters_ voted third party - green/independent/libertarian - then we can start a revolution by putting someone not in the "old boy" dem/rep camp into office.
With all the devisiveness in the Democratic camp (how many on the ticket? 10? 12?) and the fact most people I know support the troops but are beginning to KNOW that "W" is not there to support the people and probably will not be president for a second term there is no better time to push for a third party candidate - as president, as senators, or as representatives. Yes, it is very slim a third party candidate can win the presidency but if all of us who read/. and really understand what is going on with our civil liberties and the rape and pillage of the Constitution and Bill of Rights would educate our friends and family there is a chance to make a change.
Now you have to ask yourself - do you want change? Or do you want a fresh round of DMCA/RIAA/MPAA/PATRIOT whores in office that will make things worse "for the people" but easier "for the megacorps"? Me, I'm for the people since nowhere did the Constitution guarantee corporations protection under the law to abuse the rights of the people.
Yes, Virginia, you do have a choice! No, voting third party is NOT wasting a vote and if you can educate your friends on this point then you and I and the other people who think outside the FBI directed box can make a difference. With enough third party candidates in office, the scales can tip. Look into libertarian, green, and other party systems. Vote independant. Write in. Unless the state you live in has some inane requirements for putting a third party on the ballot to be voted on (in which case lobby - yeah, I hate to use that word in a way - to get the law changed to make it easier for third party candidates to be put on the ballots) then you DO have a choice. Exercise. Send a message to the "good-old-boy two part system" by putting someone else in office. Hell, that is just what the current American government system needs is a nice wake-up call that the current two party system is fscked and new blood is needed.
Hey, this stuff has been around for quite a while to protect military installations against just such an attack. All this current news means is the geeks and techies need to work on effective protection at the consumer level.
Desktop Linux stories carry some interest to me, but on a server? That's old hat, old news, and very much humdrum.
Ummm, it may be old hat and humdrum to you but THE WORD STILL NEEDS TO BE PUT OUT. Just because you're in the minority who is.. tired? of seeing Linux news does not mean the world is tired or should not conintue to see it. The best way to combat non-interest and non-knowledge by the general public is to keep putting the word in front of their noses. Keep saying "See! This is what Linux can do for you/your company." Why do you think Microsoft spends millions upon millions for advertising campaigns? - and here Linux is getting a lot of word-of-mouth and print advertising for _free_ (or close enough). Not to mention the grass roots efforts that have been going on for a while. So, just because you do not care to hear this news doesn't mean it should not be reported.
Gibson needs to get back to the Sprawl and the dirty, cyberpunk, maybe-world of the near future that he handled quite well in the Sprawl series. His grasp and ability to write in that bullet narrative that imparted enough science or pseudo-science fact to his fiction made it believable, intriguing, and interesting. IMHO, he should have never left those beginnings. Even though I've enjoyed his other works since then, none have come close to capturing the thrill of "what happen's next?" or "holy shit, too cool" as Neuromancer, Count Zero, and Mona Lisa Overdrive did.
I don't want to be the guy going to jail for being fscking stupid. And I don't want to pay this kid more than I'll make in my lifetime when he countersues - I read/. too.
The average person doesn't understand technology and its effects at the same level that/.ers do. They get their information from the mainstream news, which equally is stupid and irresponsible and instills fear in people for ratings. What a wonderful world we live in, eh? A world of ignorance.
Yes, they are. The general public are sheep. This is also one of the underlying facets of the DMCA - to control knowledge so that the general public remains sheep. Until the citizens (not consumers) of the United States get this into their apathetic sheep heads things like the DMCA will continue to plague those of us who do know the truth. Something widespread will have to happen to wake up the sheep from their slumber. With SunnComm and the RIAA doing their things, I think it has begun. Scratch that, I hope it has begun.
Let's all do the world a favor - educate your family and friends to the reality and impress upon them that this is not something that will "not ever happen to us" or "we're not doing this so we won't be affected". That mentality lets the DMCA pass in the first place.
Ummm, yes! I would love a crack at Britney Spears. I mean with a name like Spears she must be a good target. *blink* Oh, wait, we were discussing her CDs.. nevermind then. Blood coming out my ears is not what I would call a lovely evening.;-)
by NewTek. Even though it has been ported to PCs the original (and the one that won an Emmy no less) was the Amiga version. The company is still going strong and Lightwave is now 3D.
You could go with a NAS appliance from someone like Iomega or even Snap.
I have installed a small Snap Server into a client's practice (less than 30 users) and they are quite happy with it - as am I so far. No major configuration hassles, no need for tons of M$ licenses, etc, etc. Iomega even offers a Unix-based NAS if memory serves.

Let me say first off that I am in no way affiliated with these guys. Now, for the good stuff - since most of us here are looking for games on Linux (both mainstream and otherwise) might I suggest taking a look at the demo for Devil Whiskey. Not only is this a tribute to The Bard's Tale series it is also being put out on multiple platforms including Linux! Please go to the download page and get it yourself. Yeah, they have a Bittorrent set up as well. They have tested it with various distros and are keeping a list of 'tested good' distros that the public submits. Enjoy!
...you people were crying for them to go after the individual pirates, instead of the technology that facilitates the piracy.
First, I believe that the majority of the cries from the/. crowd were not to go after the individuals (as in teenagers, college students, and grandma) but the guys who do serious harm such as the Chinese/Hong Kong/etc/etc black market who are not only eroding the RIAA profit margin by a significant amount (much more than little Johnny down the street - even all the little Johnnies put together) but are themselves profiting in large amounts. The individual college student is, very likely, making jack shit from his downloading other than getting a college education without having to spend significant portions of his loans to put Mr. RIAA in a Ferrari.
