Personally, I'd like to see eBay's grip on the online auction market go away. I say if they did steal trade secrets, break eBay down so that another potential online auctioneer could conceivably get into the market.
Yes, I know, there are currently no competitors out there. But I am also positive that, give the opportunity, Google or Apple or even Yahoo! could make an investment into an online auctioneer OR develop an in-house alternative. Hell, it could be the one thing that saves Yahoo! - or at least reinvigorates it.
and yet, it seems the fans/fanboys (and girls) keep throwing money towards him - in the hope that something new will capture the spirit of the original trilogy (I believe). Unfortunately, George seems bound and determined to fill all the roles of director, producer, main grip, scriptwriter, lighting, and so forth (except music and sound). Everyone who was around for the original trilogy when it first came out all know that Lucas should _NEVER_ direct another movie -- hell, not even a commercial! -- in his life. Ever again.
I'd like to clone Irvin Kirshner (may he rest in peace) and let him re-shoot Episodes 1, 2, and 3 as the director with Lucas bound, gagged, and drugged out in the trailer with his name on it. Maybe then they would be better acted since Kirshner was famous for character development.
Personally, I'm glad the little guy won this round. Lucas doesn't deserve to sit on his "creation" for eternity+90 years. No one deserves to sit on a patent or design idea for that long. All we are doing is stifling innovation in the long run -- not preserving the benefit for the creator of "insert cool thing here".
Why not try them? They had been focusing primarily on Mexico and Central America with a secondary focus on Africa. Couldn't hurt to drop them a line and see what activities they have going on.
Did I not hear a projected release date for Windows 8 as the end of this year? Hmmm, I'm pretty sure NO ONE WANTS A NEW WINDOWS ENVIRONMENT.
Please excuse the caps, but putting out a new Windows environment when the vast majority of corporate environments - both large and small - are probably still fragmented between XP SP2, some Vista, and a good bit of Windows 7 is just plain fucking stupid. How many have upgraded all of their internal systems to work with 7? I've been in IT in various guises for nearly 20 years and I'm getting tired of shorter and shorter releases between new versions. It is getting to the point that even the "sheeple" are starting to notice and say "What the hell do I need a new version of Windows for? My computer works just fine." Plus, small businesses and even corporations are getting tired of shelling out cash for new releases in short time frames and many of these companies - especially small business - CANNOT afford the upgrade cycles.
I am not sure but I predict that this will be Windows XP vs Vista again, with Windows 8 being the major loser. Windows 7 works just fine, thank you very much.
How about the United States Government NOT do things which cannot stand up under scrutiny and the light of day so that "leaks" are irrelevant? How about training your ambassadors to give you accurate representations of foreign dignitaries without the colorful asides and random bashing and hate mongering? Why don't we inject some actual ethics back into our government?
Let every other country degrade themselves and their citizens into a police state BUT let _this_ country remain a shining beacon for freedom and democracy. Let them envy us. None of the movies that are in the hands of Sony/Columbia/Etc. are going to get the treatment they deserve. The X-Men's first class was Marvel Girl (aka Jean Grey), Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, and Angel. Period.
Spider-Man and other super-hero movies do not need two or three villains to tell a good story. Let me repeat this - they DO NOT NEED TWO OR THREE VILLAINS. One main villain (or group of villains - Hydra, The Hand, and such are OK) and some good character development on both sides and BAM! instant summer success. Add in special effects to compliment and enhance the story, not to tell the story because your writers suck.
So, until said studios lose their rights to those properties and they get a proper treatment MAKE MINE MARVEL!
For the love of all that is holy and unholy, please do NOT shoot this movie in 3D. Tell the story as close to "as written" as you can and put good visuals backing the story up on the screen and the audience will get it. No, cyberpsace does not have to be in 3D to tell the story correctly. It can all be done in 2D and tell an amazing story including all the cyberspace portions of it. And for fuck's sake - get the Sprawl correct!! The Boston-Atlanta Metropolitan Axis must have that same Blade Runner-esque feeling to it -- the domes, condensation from them, broken neon, dirty, used up.
Blade Runner was in 2D and would have sucked ass in 3D. Neuromancer can have the same impact as Blade Runner by doing one thing - telling the damn good story from the book on the big screen. Period.
You do realize that what he said was "there's no reason why every home cannot be wired with 50 incoming optical lines (1 cm thick bundle)" -- which means that you don't have to dig the yard up 50 times AND you could create one large switch station in the neighborhood and have each company utilizing it pay part of the maintenance fees. Yes, Virginia, you can pack an assload of fiber optic lines into one small bundle and run it to the house and to the switching station(s).
Err, no. It will not fail for that reason - just like Star Wars Galaxies did not fail because Jedi/Sith could not cut through people at one blow. (SWG failed due to the CU and NGE bullshit.)
Who the fuck would want to play a MMORPG where one class could kill the others in one hit? Or when two Jedi or Sith meet, the one who lands the first blow wins? This is a massively multi-player game and all of the people who play it will understand WHY lightsabers do _not_ cut through people (and things) in one hit.
This is not a lightsaber fail. This is a "We understand why lightsabers don't work like the books and movies describe them. And we're cool with that. Here's my credit card, now let me go kill shit Star Wars style."
Hey, maybe during the downtime someone will pull an old backup and put Star Wars Galaxies back to pre-CU status! I'd actually play the game again, then.
Yes, yes, I know - it needed some work back then. It did not need the Combat Upgrade and New Game Enhancement that was, basically, tossed to the masses and then SOE tells everyone "Deal with it."
that Mediacom, by using this technique to redirect certain traffic, are in fact violating 18 U.S.C. 1030 (Fraud and Related Activity in Connection with Computers) by committing just that -- FRAUD. If I go to Google to search for an explanation of a math problem but all of my traffic is routed through Mediacom's system first and I then get responses from Mediacom that looks like they are coming from Google - that is fraud. Pure and simple. I _trust_ Google (for the most part) to give me the information I am seeking. I don't trust my ISP that is redirecting traffic and injecting their own ads to increase their profit margins. The ISP exists solely to move data, un-accosted except for "traffic shaping", across their wires. If I type in www.google.com and start a search, by all that is holy and unholy my data had better be going to Google and not be redirected to point B before reaching Google -- isn't that, technically, a man-in-the-middle attack? Which is also a violation of 18 U.S.C. 1030 I believe.
I hate that the United States is lawsuit happy but, let's face it, hitting these assholes in their pocketbooks are probably the only thing that will get them to cease and desist. The ribbon is just a dressed up piece of shite that Microsoft wants to push for proprietary reasons. The ribbon is a Mobius strip of smoke and mirrors in desperate need of an off-ramp.
can still lend books and do it natively. Yes, I know, you cannot lend all the books you buy but at least you can lend some of them and the list is expanding. SOME is better than NONE, and here's to hoping Barnes & Noble can keep pushing for publishers to allow more books to be loaned out.
If the publishers are smart, they will realize that allowing eBooks to be loaned out greatly increases their chances for more sales. If not, I hope more authors will self-publish and creative groups will make apps to facilitate loaning.
I see this as a symptom of greed coupled with... not necessarily stupidity, but something close. I also agree with several other posters who have said "time" is a major factor in the "just reboot it and get it running again" scenario.
Why do I say greed and stupidity? If a system administrator (and whoever else set up the initial system, if it wasn't just the admin) has done their job correctly, the majority of their time should be taken up doing - technically - nothing. In reality, a good admin will always try to keep their skills up-to-date, learn new skills or methods to help them on the job, and so on. Their normal routine of monitoring the systems and/or network should not take all day (unless the admin is the only one for hundreds of systems) and that leaves them "open" - which, in my opinion, is the correct way for system admins to be. "Open" means they are able to respond to a user's service call if they need to show in-person, they can instantly respond to an issue with a server or the network, they can respond if there is a down router/cable modem/phone system/other component, and above all if they are "open" it means _management_ has not arbitrarily decided "Oh, since you don't appear to be doing anything we're going to assign you task(s) X, Y, and Z -- even though they aren't in your area of expertise."
So, the company assigns them other "work" to do because they don't _appear_ busy (greed) which in turn removes their ability to be "open" to respond in a timely manner (stupidity). There are times when a down system can take someone a while to repair which then means the other "work" added on to the admin doesn't get done and suddenly the admin is getting a bad review -- for work not attached to the job they were hired to do. And so on and so forth.
Basically, if you know less about system administration/network administration than the person you hired to do the job and your systems are running smoothly and efficiently with little to no downtime then fuck off and let them do their job -- even if they don't appear busy.
You see, I would put down every site imaginable on the internet - Facebook, Myspace, Slashdot, MSN, Yahoo, YouTube, etc, etc, but in-between these I would also put in the "good" sites -- grungefuck.com, sadism.com, wifebeater.com, ifuckedyoursister.com, and anything else I could imagine vile and disturbing. For every user name I would put FUBAR and for every password FUCKYOU.
Then, considering I would run out of space on the lines of the form, in the margins of the application I would write
"All website information on this application is fake and shall in no way be construed as an answer to the question put forth. As you have no legal right to ask this question, as it is a form of discrimination and an invasion of privacy, then I have no legal reason to answer said question with factual information. My lawyer will be contacting you regarding this matter*. Fuck you and have a nice day!"
And then immediately contact my personal lawyer and the ACLU. That question is nothing more than a load of horse shit and governmental intrusion into the private life of individuals. They don't have a legal leg to stand on by asking for the information they've asked for - especially passwords.
I wonder just how hard it would be to include slow-dissolving chlorine into the paint or whitewash process? Or even some type of after-painting/whitewashing application that is laced with slow dissolving chlorine?
It would have to be limited to very low amounts of chlorine, just enough to break up the mold/mildew cycle, and not enough to kill off surrounding vegetation or contaminate water. Small amounts of chlorine in water are fine - and will cause the water to stay potable longer - but too high and, of course, the water isn't really drinkable.
Just a thought. I'm sure some of the really smart guys out there can work it out.
There is also the possible use of copper to keep the mold/mildew away but you run a higher risk of vegetation and water being ruined. Also the use of salts can retard the growth of vegetation/mold/mildew.
The software can anonymously (can't think of the word I want but this is close enough) scan...
I believe the word you are looking for would be unbiased in one form or another. Your sentence would be "The software can, without bias, scan each file..." The program should hold no specific bias, other than looking at the first four bytes of each file for a MUSIC based match. It could find 10,000 pornographic images or videos and should ignore them since that is not what the program was instructed to find.
I know I should not be a grammar/word "Nazi" but if (and I quote) she were seated on the other side of the isle (end quote) I would hope she has some coconuts and fresh water because the fishing is good on my side of the isle;-)
IANAL but would this not be grounds for a mistrial and sanctions against the judge in question? I am pretty sure that in America, if you have a bias due to affiliation then you should recuse yourself from the case as a judge. I am not sure about Sweden, but this would only make sense since a judge is _supposed_ to be fair and impartial.
Kinda hard to be impartial when you belong to the same organization as three of the prosecutors...
Why? Simple: While an R rating usually means more gory violence and blood splashed across the screen, what it can also mean is that the director could choose to actually deal with DEATH. The director can show serious consequences of choosing particular actions instead of the (Marvel inspired) revolving door program where no-one dies (really).
Do we get to see death in PG and PG-13 movies? Sure. We just don't get to really see the horror that death contains usually. We get a cut-scene where someone pulls a trigger or uses a power and we cut to the hero crying or expounding upon the impact said death had on him and how the evil must be avenged. Make a decent film? Usually. A little reality creeping into a movie? Ummm, no. Death is rarely - if ever - a pretty, clean event where no blood is spilled and a body looks perfect. Even in a superhero movie.
Look at Star Wars. Episode IV, we had two dead bodies (Uncle Ben and Aunt Beru); we had all the dead Jawas; we had a mutilated arm; we had Han shooting Greedo (first!) In the Empire Strikes Back we had a hand getting chopped off and a few other incidents. In Return, we had some ships getting blown up and some minor violence but no real blood or such. In Ep I, II, and III we had what? A lot of droids getting killed so the Jedi had an opponent they could cut into pieces. The only gruesome moments were Darth Maul getting cut in half, the fight between Mace and the Emperor, and Anakin getting his ass kicked by Obi Wan. I'm sure I missed a few things, but overall they were tame. Sure, for the audience they wanted to market to they were balanced correctly. For a little more realism (Jedi were JUST killing droids the whole time? Please.) there could have been multiple bodies strewn around with limbs missing and such. I'm sure the Jedi didn't go down easy or quickly when Order 66 was issued which means a lot of dead clones.
Punisher's problem was that they replaced the guy who had just played Punisher for the reboot. I mean, wtf?? If they had left the same actor in there and DID NOT RETELL WHY PUNISHER BECOMES PUNISHER - AGAIN - then they would have had a much better reception. Just make a Punisher movie where he has a bad guy, lots of guns, and a reason to kill the motherfucker and let him go to work.
So, back to the main reason I started this rant: I realize we go to the movies to escape reality for an hour or two but there is a place for R rated superhero movies; they just actually have to be worth watching in the first place. Watchmen is one of those movies. It also requires the audience to actually think and not just float through the movie going haha at the right moments. Movies do not need to be dumbed down, the viewing public should be intelligenced up instead. I can see why movie studios will focus on PG and PG-13, because that is where the most profit usually is. But if they can get a decent script for an R superhero(ish) movie, it will make good money. Also, stop using $30,000,000 per movie actors - find someone else who can fill the role(s) and cut down on your overhead.
