I choose to use IE instead of FireFox at work because of one feature: 'Ignore colors specified on web pages' in IE's Tools, Internet Options, Accessibility.
With this feature on, I am able to browse at work without my screen being full of web page colors that make it look like I am goofing off.
I realise it is an exotic option for a browser, but I wish they would include it in FireFox because it makes a real, practical difference to me.
But these file association problems would still be there using WinFS attributes instead of file extensions.
e.g. If someone is lazy enough to use.dat for their newly invented format, you could imagine them writing just 'Data' as the format in WinFS.
For me, the whole problem is that the majority of users are lazy (and with good reason). WinFS comes with the assumption that users are going to bother writing wordy descriptions of their data.
That being said, I would always be interested in interfaces that make that job easier for users, improving our 20+ year old designed filesystems.
Homology was found shooting at civilians last night.
You want proof you say?
There are many people in the world who love nothing more than seeing the US make mistakes and taking lives. Why would they not make this sort of shit up? I know I would if i were in their shoes.
I find this whole argument...dishonest (that file sharing should be ok because it financially helps the RIAA). Because I see a lot of people using it on slashdot and I'm sure at least half of them don't believe it deep down.
In a way it hijacks any real arguments that we may have against the RIAA.
Anyway, nothing is going to change until the wider public realise that all media is a only collection of bits. Nearly every attempt to control it has been to the detriment of the general public.
That's why filesharing is bad, because it lets you start thinking you should have any control over music.
They are after money. If control gives them more of it, which it does because they are nearly a cartel, then they may be after control as well. But money is the root reason for their dislike of open file sharing.
Something like Wikipedia comes to mind. But instead of holding word defintions it holds software problems and their solutions.
If two people ask the same question then they are somehow integrated into one. I guess the mechanism would be through community help, open source style.
I guess I just don't see many situations where I am more comfortable adjusting fragile and obscure text configuration files.
Fragile? Obscure? Guess you don't need the registry.
Your guess is correct. He didn't need the registry for any of the programs he listed.
On the other hand, calling linux configuration files 'fragile' and 'obscure' may be going a bit far. Some people feel it's ok to focus on the subset of bad linux applications and ignore the mounds of windows crap that is sitting on the web.
You might find it much more effective to put your club calendar on a web page, doesn't have to be any fancier than whatever you email out. All 208 members of your club know to look there for updates.
So you would have the users inefficiently poll a web page in case the information on it changed?
If you want to operate a mailing list for your interest group, there are good ways to go about that. If you want to dissemenate information periodically, there are much more effective ways than email, more reliable, an overall better use of resources, easier to manage, and just plain the right way to do things.
I would be interested to know a more effective way of notification than e-mail.
For a real world example, I need to send out information regarding product updates to anyone who has signed up for it. Many of these people complained when there was no such newsletter, as they had to refresh my website constantly to see if there was anything new happening. What other way is there than e-mail for this?
Like you, I mainly stay with windows because of games (the same game you mentioned, Battlefield series).
I can only imagine the uptake rate if there was a good 3d game like Battlefield 1942 or Vietnam that was released only for Linux. It wouldn't have to be free although I guess the problem has been that there wouldn't be much money to be made from such a scheme. It also appears that this is too big of a challenge for open source. Sad.
I find C can be the best choice when dealing with Win32 APIs.
I admit that some of this may be because of ignorance of COM or other new APIs. But I would add that I find it understandable that developers would be weary of investing too much of their time into new MS APIs. I for one am a little cautious after dealing with such bad design in the past from them.
Say can you tell me, when you mortgage a property, you get half of the price of it from the bank right? Then while it is mortgaged, no one can buy it from the bank?
If you feel like parting more monopoly wisdom, what is the deal with paying $50 to get out of jail early?

I was hoping this too, he is a great voice man.
My favorite Futurama episode is the early one where he cuts the ceremony ribbon with the ship's laser. Some great gags throughout.
I assume you are talking about Blackjack. You are totally correct. You will also find that many people disagree with you. It is very frustrating playing blackjack next to some superstitous person who makes rude remarks if you play 'wrongly'.
Sorry but you are making a mountain out of a molehill. When people refer to him as a 'game designer' they use it in the spirit of 'system designer'. He designs 3d graphics systems which are used for games.
I think the sentence you just wrote would have trouble fitting into 100GB.

I'm sure a lot of people agree with that (including me). But the problem is not in the politicians. It never was.
The problem is that the general population do not punish leaders with 'floppy' policies. It is a simple supply & demand thing.

Thank you. That really sums up the problem with anything resembling WinFS for me.
Chalk it up as another victory to good in theory vs. good in practice.

Don't let a total lack of evidence ruin your paranoid delusions though.
As a republican I totally agree with you. (That if the roles were reverse the republicans would be trying to prevent the 3rd party from running).

Of course your answer is yes going by your logic. Otherwise you must be an irate geek!

I had this same problem with Mozilla on Win32 about 1.5 years ago.

Froogle might be what you are talking about.
I've gotta agree with you. Of all the FPS's I've played the fondest memories are of TF.
Sniping with single shot kills, burning snipers to a crisp with the fire guy, knifing ppl in the back as a spy, ahh great days....
Me too.
