You know, you could still popularize this idea with a made for TV movie... I can just see it: Vin Diesel (in full faux fur) as Grok the Spearthrower Seann William Scott as his pratfall producing sidekick, Grrrok Leann Rimes as the brainstorming two-syllable-speaking love interest Gerroknah, And, John Lithgow as Gerrok, He Who Broke Grok's Spear And Grunts with An Outsider's Accent
And, of course, the cast of Cats as the "giant animals".
Thanks, looks kinda cool... now if only I had an Nvidia chip to run the demos...

Seriously, even if their is some element of humor here that is lost in cross-cultural translation, there is no point to these ads.
If they exist to generate a buzz as you have suggested, I think they shot themselves in the foot. Case in point: I read of the ads here on slashdot and proceeded to view them with my firefox-using coworkers. "Thank you for wasting our time" and "Why does Firefox need to run stupid ads" and "Is the new Opera release any good" are all comments that are part of the *buzz* you mentioned...
If Firefox succeeds in confusing its own users with this "ad-campaign", what are the potential-users going to think?

The very last chapter "Medical Image Reconstruction with the FFT" was really the only one that had caught my eye -- anyone out there know of any projects involving processing loads of FFT's on a GPU such as in image restoration? Just curious...
Just a quick not-well-thought-out idea, but what about trying to turn this over to the public, maybe some sort of amateur consortium -- some sort of "open source science". I'm sure they've got huge amounts of data on these little guys, is it accessible? Does anyone have a tutorial for macgyvering a 386, a microwave and some tinfoil to send/receive Voyageur instructions?
...Slashdot.org's gross miscalculation in the actual comedic value of their April Fool's Day posts have led to a spur in the productivity of technology companies, IT support staff, and universities across the globe.
rather than science.slashdot.org, this one might have been better sorted as steaming_pile.slashdot.org

Sounds like Tony is just trying to fluff his word count.
Interestingly enough, Schweitzer (who is conducting the study), has done previous work on "dino blood" that has been "re-manufactured" by certain creationists to case-in-point their side of the coin: http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/dinosaur/bl ood.htm l
I scanned the article, but didn't see any reference to dates... the Museum of the Rockies mentions they finished their Hells Creek T-rex dig just recently, and that this particular specimen was excavated 2001-2003(search MOR1125 )... So, when was this bad boy dropped? When did the 'soft tissue' analysis occur?

Sweet -- does this mean Jar Jar dies quickly, yet abhorrently painfully???
Way to go Threadwatch, you just indicted, tried, and sentenced Google to the bowels of Microsoft over *one* measly example of self-promotion. One stinking example of milking their own Adwords-ranking on -- and get this -- a site that lo-and-behold provides support information on traffic estimates and keyword submission.
Apparently you only refer to *irony* as those wedge-shaped burns on the back of your trousers.
was I the only one out there who was curious to see if those links traced to tobacco-using minority groups?
But now I know: black smokers are hydrothermal vents with unnamed predatory snails and armor-cladded mollusks. Sounds like something straight out of magic: the gathering...
Add to that the fact that he refers to his significant other as an SO and you have the "sum of all idiots." If they're really that "significant", why do you apply a PC label to them?
I enjoy reading the articles on science, interesting OS developments, actual news... but, man, these lapses in quality control just irk me silly. I would expect this to be a "CNN Technology Corner" spotlight article, but Slashdot? Come on. You're better than that...
We do get super-saver shipping via US Priority -- gets here in about 10-12 days. Anything on the "ground" is usually shipped via barge, taking about 4-6 weeks.
So, 10 days isn't too shabby. No complaints there, just complaining that AK/HI don't receive cost-comparable options to that of the mainland.
Also, does "vote with your feet" apply to online shopping...
Well, although it took little energy, I had to click to "Learn more about Amazon Prime" before I realized they only ship to continental US. So, Alaska & Hawaii (not to mention US Territories) miss out again! It's too bad we still can't sign up for the same deal and just pay the difference in 2-day/overnight shipping. Considering we don't have a ground option to begin with(here in Hawaii), this would be a nice token gesture.
*sigh*
Oh well, I'm sure hope these work-provided mai-tai's can ease my pain...
And, why not? Maybe they're somehow more able to efficiently search their own data-tanks than other companies'...
The crazy thing is, I can see my someone as innocuous as my grandma opening up a rinky dink blog on quilting techniques and muffin recipes and generating more revenue through adwords than I'll ever make in my life as a frickin engineer...
either way, do you think i could use that "give me a referral for a free piece of electronics and i'll paypal you x dollars" for a sig? think of all the laughs it would generate! Ha! Slashdot infamy, here I come! pfffffft.

I don't have a letter opener -- instead, can I repeat "there is no spoon" aloud until someone else presents a letter opener?
I concur -- why don't they just use their space capes!
"The inside of the house is also covered with foil and the beds are covered with a foil-like material as well,"
So, these are the guys that buy those "space blankets"...

1. Okay, here's your DSN at 1/250th scale:
http://deepspace.jpl.nasa.gov/dsn/educ/model.html
We can build 4 of them and obtain a virtual 70m dish(at scale).
2. Now, multiply all dimensions, parts quantities, and tool sizes by 250.
3. ?
4. Profit.
