I read lots of blog posts, pros/cons, and I even read the FreeBSD Handbook! I get that it can be very stable and can meet nearly all my needs, but it just can't meet them all. I am not a hardcore gamer, but I've bought quite a few Humble Bundles over the years and have enjoyed many of the games. I have an Nvidia video card (oh horror!). It was a few months ago that I did my analysis, but there were a few gaps and quite a few more potential gaps.

I get it - for hardcore system admins, it's probably pretty awesome. But I am not. I am just a long-time linux user who (obviously) admins my own stuff. Since this thread is about Debian, it is what has spoiled me.. with all of its apt magic!! I don't want to have to go back to compiling packages to get them to work. I still do on occasion if I really need to, but I really can't spend hours on trying to figure out dependencies and troubleshooting build errors.

Maybe FreeBSD is somewhere in my future, but every time I have switched to a different OS / flavor of Linux, there has been a compelling reason - both for what I am switching from and to. I don't find FreeBSD compelling enough right now.

I would have to do these things if I reinstalled Mint anyway. (with the latest release, I don't get a good feeling that I can do it trouble-free as I have in the past) I hadn't played with vms for a while, and had always used Virtualbox. I have to say, using kvm/virsh was quite pleasant and I was very happy with the performance of it.

My plan was to just get a 64 or 128 GB SSD and install Devuan on it, then keep my current disk setup as-is as a backup boot option. I just haven't pulled the trigger yet because I haven't dived into the SSD pool yet and want to do some more research on the purchase. And I read that prices may plummet in the coming months.

They wanted to read an existing file, modify the values for a couple of columns. Of course, they had Excel set to open csv files. Notepad even struggled with this file size.
I have vi installed within MSYS64 and was able to edit that file to their liking within a couple of minutes. With vi and a few other command line tools I was able to create other large input files easily. One example was a 5 MM row file with 2.5 MM unique rows and 2.5 MM duplicates.

I know vi isn't everyone's cup of tea, and I certainly don't push it on anyone. They've tried to learn it, and I've tried to teach them, but instead I am just the go-to guy for large data files now.

My needs for writing documents though are largely non-existent. I will use Writer for that, and I have used Calc for a couple of things. My wife uses Excel and Word though. We have an older version, maybe 2007?, on her laptop which runs Win7. If it ain't broke....

First thing - backed up my bookmarks from Pale Moon to a json file.

Then tried unsuccessfully for about 10 minutes to FIND the bookmark restore in FF. It was hidden down in the Library > Bookmarks > Show all bookmarks. This is the kind of thing that FF implemented that drives me nuts. In Pale Moon it's under Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks. They imported fine though.

I use mouse gestures, and while the legacy add-on I used was disabled as no longer supported, it did have a "find replacement" button which gave me several options to choose from. I installed Foxy Gestures, and it worked well. I don't use a ton of add-ons, but some are essential and it's always nice to have them to make browsing easier.

I will have to see how configurable FF is now. I am not really into themes, but I like to have words instead of icons for things like back, home, etc. I don't like HAVING to use icons. I couldn't find an immediate way to change that in FF (another thing they did to aggravate me) but will keep looking.

As far as use, it's quick... and is what I would expect from FF. I opened up the same few tabs in each, and looked at the memory usage, and at first glance, was impressed! I have a script I can run to show the top 10 memory users. Slashdot says the output is junk characters and won't let me post the results.
But it was using this: ps axo %mem, rss, comm, ppid, pid | sort -nr | head -n 10

palemoon at the top, with an rss of 812544 (10%), then firefox with 496528 (7.9%). Wow, that looks great.
But... there were 4 "Web Content" processes that were spawned by FF as well. So the real FF total was 1536780 (19%) - almost twice as much as pale moon.
Do I really care? It's yet to be seen. Previously when I left FF it was gobbling up memory and was slow. Now it's consuming plenty, but is fast. I only have 8 GB of RAM on my machine, and I rarely even use half of it. So not a huge deal. But I know on my Windows10 machine at work, I am very often pushing the limits of memory usage. So take my quick test for what it is worth, and check your own usage.

I am not switching back to FF just yet, because pale moon is doing great. But it's good to know that they are making strides in the right direction.
