Maybe it's time to turn in my Geek card, but I fail to see the appeal of this. I'm a sci-fi nut & tried to watch the show when it was on but I thought it was some of the lamest acting and plot I'd ever seen. It was like a really bad western in space. I can't see why people are drooling over this movie coming out. I liked Buffy as much as the next person, but this seemed really weak to me.

People on slashdot have an orgasm every time this movie is mentioned...I just don't get it.

    well put.

I get really irked by these OS pissing contests as well. At the end of the day, any computer is just a TOOL to get work done. I personally have Linux, Windows, Mac, Solaris & Open BSD. They are all tools, they all do different jobs. Some are internet servers, some are firewalls, some are file servers, some are desktops.

I appreciate the motivation for Linux & try to donate to projects like debian and others when I use their stuff. I also appreciate the security of OpenBSD & happily buy CD's and T-Shirts to support a product I use daily. I use OS X for a desktop because it just works. I spend all day mucking with systems and the last thing I want to do is mess with my desktop when I get home. They all have their uses, but in the end, they are all just a different tool that helps me do a job or waste a bit of time.

As a long time (5+ years) user of a Kinesis Keyboard I can tell you that it's the best keyboard I have ever used. It took me about a week to get used to the new layout (I stayed away from root shells) but once I did, I've never looked back. It's the most comfortable keyboard I've ever tried. I own one for home & one for work. Combined with the Evoluent mouse, my hands are much, much happier now.

Probably. But why should I have to turn off spyware? I should remove it! In fact, it shouldn't be installed in the first place, unless I wanted it there!

Having programs that work only when the spyware that came with them is running is nothing new. But this is the first time that I actually *paid* for the program (at the store, no less) and it still required that spyware be installed and active for the program to run.

Did you read the EULA? I suspect (but don't know since I don't own the game) that's part of the EULA. If you don't want it, then don't play the game. I'm not going to argue about it being spyware or not, that's pointless. It's valves game, you chose to purchase it & agree to their terms. Deal with it, shut it off when not playing or Delete the game if you feel so strongly about this so called spyware.

And then, even when I'm not playing, Steam pops up and sends messages to my screen. So far, they've been related to HL2 and Steam, but how long will it be before Valve is advertising their new game? Or somebody else's new game, available through Steam? Or how about some new energy drink to drink while playing their game?

Not having a windows box anymore, I'm currious:

Can't you just shut off steam when you are not running HL2? I can't believe it has to be active in the system tray even when you are not playing the game...
