Instead, you buy from Microsoft, who would never dare do such a thing.
Exactly. I can install Windows on just about any old computer I can scrounge up from thrift shops.... Which is why I'm wondering why the switch to Intel isn't about cheap hardware. I certainly think that the move is to get people like myself using OSX. I still can't imagine ever buying overpriced Apple hardware, but I'll fork over $200 to try out their OS for fun.
Anyone who thinks the switch to Intel is all about cheaper components has surely lost their mind...
Then what's the point? I'd only try OSX if I could get it to run on generic, non-proprietary hardware. I don't currently buy *anything* from Apple and never have due to their draconian hardware lock-in that allows them to rape the consumer.
Faith is for children and idiot religious types. Faith in software is no better than somebody who has faith that Jesus will save them or Santa Claus will come down their chimney. Faith is for people with very low IQ's.
I've been lookin' *forever* for a free (OSS is fine) calendar for Windows, but I can't find nothin' that comes close to Outlook. I've been watching Sunbird, but it's going *very* slow, and they're still in the fix-the-major-bugs-so-it-doesn't-lose-data stage, so adding features will (hopefully) come much later.
Instead of a body count and a titilating expose into Britney's Spears choice of toothpaste, THIS is what SHOULD make news! Imagine how cool it would be if we lived in a country full of intelligent, interesting people who thought that this was real news. That professor explaining the situation was awesome!!
So, what's your point? Are the "lower classes" missing out on some kind of mandatory programming? Do you consider television ownership as a determinant in quality of life?
Wow. The TV industry has got you hook-line-and sinker, huh? Scary to see what good marketing can do. Here's a bit of re-education for you: TV is not an essential component of live. My girlfriend and I have been TV-free for several years now, and we're much better because of it. We're poor. We save lots of money not paying for advertising, and we have time to do things that are important to us. But more importantly:
NOBODY is ENTITLED to a cheap TV any more than anybody is ENTITLED to have a cheap Ferrari.
Seriously, though -- why do people still pirate MS products when you can have the free (better?) alternative operating system, office suite, e-mail client, yadda yadda?
Unfortunately, after workign for years in a University IT department, I've discovered that the old motto, "Those who can't, teach", can also be revised to "Those who can't, work in the public sector". In my experience, the least competent, most lazy, and most politically motivated people work in ALL branches of government. Why? Simple. You can get fired much more easily in the private sector than from a government job (where *every* firing is a case of some kind of discrimination). Thus, the University system (or any other government sector) is often where the least competent filter down to. I wish it wasn't true, living in a beautiful university town and all...
For un, it's the fact that Firefox simply doesn't work on 3/5 machines I have. The latest version simply doesn't launch... and that's on different computers with different setups. This *major* bug has driven us (my company) away from Firefox for at least another year, when we may give it another shot when it's more mature. Until then, it's IE only for us.
the "Cult of Ease" has resulted in countless generations of incompetent slobs unable to even wipe their own/tmp dir, let alone figure out how to reboot
Well, why stop there? Generations of having "farmers" has made it so people can't grow their own food any more. Everybody should learn how to grow their own food, and raise their own meat. And hell, when was the last time you met somebody who could make their own clothes? I mean, everybody I know just buys their clothes. If they need a special shirt, wouldn't it be better if they grew their own cotton, made their own fabric, and leared to sew themselves?
It's called "speciaization". It's the basis of advanced human civilization. Without it, we'd still be living like the Amish.
Has everybody lost their minds?? $100 to replace a battery? In which parallel dimension is this not considered predatory price gouging? What an incredible rip off. I can't understand why there are Apple fanatics that eat this stuff up.
This is one of the worst articles I've read in a long time. I couldn't even figure out what this guy was talking about. He starts talking about a union, then he says let's call it "Linux" for no apprent rhyme or reason.
That, and this guy, writing for an online mag I've never met, is a bit delusional about this massive mob of millions of Linux people who all work together.
Like any business idea, the first question should always be, "What itch does this business scratch"? And honestly, I can't figure this out. A credit card is a tiny size of a cell phone, and actually, you don't even need a physical card to use one. They're already universally accepted. So could this *possibly* be any small kind of improvement that would make it a viable product?
I love it when Americans trash America. It means that somebody really cares about the shithole that our society is turning into and wants to see it change. People who complain that people shouldn't complain about America (Hello Mr. Bush) simply don't understand this country and those people (such as yourself) are the real traitors.
In other words, without Richard, we'd be stuck in the 80's or early 90's where all software is commercial crap, shareware crap, and all of the power over computer users would belong to big companies - forever locking them in and controlling their computer usage.
That's funny. When I was growing up with computers in the 80's, there was TONS of Freeware, and none of this ridiculous license bickering that's argued about at least 5 times a day on Slashdot. People wrote programs, and gave them away. It was that simple. If anything, RMS killed Freeware.
Principals that were fought for at the cost of many lives.
Considering that the US military is designed to destroy and occupy entire countries, can you imagine what they'd do to the US, with a alrgely unarmed, and incredibly ignorant population? It'd be a bloothbath. You don't bring a Glock-9 to a Fuel-Air Bomb Party. I'm sorry, but if the shit goes donw, I'm gone. I'm not convinced that there's anything left worth saving.
so I went over to Wired, and I read the short article, and when I got to the end, I was thinking how some rabid Slashdotter would twist this into having to do with Microsoft. I couldn't figure anything out that makes any sense. So while your post is completely irrelevant, it's a pretty good attempt at a troll. You even managed to get a "5". Congrats!
Are computer people really becoming the 90 lb weaklings that they're so often made out to be? I remember reading a Slashdot article about a 10lb notebook a few weeks ago, and everybody was screaming about them being "too heavy". And now, it's hard to use a keyboard? You gotta be kidding me. Are all geeks *really* that fat and pasty now? Honestly... I can't imagine a healthy person complaining about it being "hard" to press 3 buttons on a keyboard.
The fascination comes from the fact that no company or organization of any kind, I'd guess, in the history of man, has generated this much wealth, this quickly. Arguibly, Microsoft is one of the most successful companies in history.
Instead, you buy from Microsoft, who would never dare do such a thing.

And now it extends to TV.
So, what's your point? Are the "lower classes" missing out on some kind of mandatory programming? Do you consider television ownership as a determinant in quality of life?
This is going to hurt America's poor the most.

Time = Money.
People are poor.

Not, the article is Slashdotted, but even the ARTICLE SUMMARY specifically says, "Brother Industries". Not Canon. Can you read?
So with IE7, what's the draw?

Which quarter are you talking about? Financial quarters generally don't generally end on January 31.
No, they're still better off financially than the corporation that owns this web site.

But it's a great way to sell advertising.

Wow. Jealous is ugly, obvious, and really ridiculous, all at the same time.
