    The last macbook pro I bought had the battery up against the keyboard instead of being user accessible.

    Apple just wants you to junk the entire machine instead of replacing the battery.

    It's not optimal but then what is?

    We hire only through employee references. LinkedIn helps check on some of those connctions .

    Ads didn't work for mid level. Kind of worked for senior and junior engineers, go figure. I suspect that's more to do with mortgages or lack there of.

    I used to work with a boss who was an absolute nightmare in meetings but a kind, gentle soul in reality.

    It was a tough facade that he used to drive away SJWs long before they were called that. The spineless opinionated clowns had no twitter to organise flashmobs to terrorise businesses at that time.

    Now he's retired and the new CEO is rapidly causing the business to run astray with SJW distractions.

    Absolutely. I said the same about the "free" Windows 10 upgrade plans and was laughed at. Now look at Windows. Heading inexorably towards a subscription model.

    Apple isn't much better with their push towards ios app subscriptions.

    I have a license on macos which is going to go waste when Mojave is released - 32 bit vs 64 bit - as I have no plans or need to upgrade thanks to LibreOffice.

    Even got my accountant to switch. Those guys are wedded to Excel.

    They've tried this before. Subtle tricks like acquring the Internet.org domain and putting out huge billboards advertising their zero free on ramps.

    They had tied up with operators like Airtel to offer free access to Facebook.

    Under pressure, the TRAI looked into it and passed one of the strongest net neutrality regimes in the world.

    Company laid off my boss of 8 years, and put a genuine asshole in his place.

    After a few months, I was on a call with the guy and got an alert saying the company stock was at an all time high.

    Cashed out then and there, during the call and resigned shortly after.

    Haven't worked since.

  14. This has already been done. Audio beacons. Those tracking companies hate microphone permissions on iOS (and possibly android now) for this reason.

    Earlier they could turn on the mic at will, now users a bit more aware.

    You need to set up fonts for the high res display. Windows doesn't always do it automatically.

    I forget how but you could open up the Control Panel, search for Cleartype or Cleartext(?) and configure it.

    It puts up some sample renderings and you select the ones which look the best. Then the display looks fine.

    Apple is the iPhone company now, like Xerox used to be the toner heads and HP became the ink company.

    If you look at Cook's products, they're all inspired by the iPhone. Short (2-3 year) life cycle, no user updatable parts, glued together. Cook knows how to turn a profit. He doesn't know how to make computers.

    Quite possible. They'll first have to port XCode to Windows or Linux (unlikely) and that'll be the death of the Mac.

    I think Apple has peaked.

    The way Motorola had peaked in the late 80s and Lucent in the mid 90s. They're just monsters with tons of cash so they take some years to die.

    MSFT somehow reminds me of IBM. Present and profitable but irrelevant.

    The big markets are India and China and android is big there.

    When you can pick up a Oneplus 6 for 1/3rd the price of an X, with the same feature set (on paper), no one in rational price sensitive market would buy a luxury phone.

    I'm a long term iPhone user but paying a premium for no headphone jack? Forget it.

    To make sure MSFT continues to rise. When 10 was announced, I recollect people predicting a forced push to a subscription model, on the lines of Adobe. Those people were shouted down.

    When you're out of ideas - not that Microsoft was ever an innovator - lockin and subs are the way to go.

    I expect Apple to head that way too, in the next 3-5 years. Cook is no Jobs, he's more like Gates in the money department.
