  1. Article makes claims without any backing on How Battlestar Galactica Killed TV · · Score: 1

    The article states:

Industry pundits talk about audiovisual downloads through some system like Apple's iTunes Music Store, and perhaps we'll see something like this in the near future, but this works against the simple fact that people do not expect to pay for television programs

Is there any data to back this up? Maybe people would in fact be willing to pay $1 for a TV episode on demand without commericals or 50 cents with an episode with commericals, or maybe not, the article does not prove the case one way or the other.

  6. Estimate vs. Knowledge on How Well Do You Estimate? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Some of the questions in the quiz are not suitable for estimation.

For example answering "the year that Harold II became King of England" requires knowledge of English history. Any answer prior to the mid 1900s is a reasonable one for a person who only knows about Queen Elizabeth II.

People with more knowledge know this a pre-Norman Conquest King and so the answer must be before 1066. But that reduction in the scope of the answer comes from existing knowledge not by estimating.

  7. I went to their rollout on Canadian Team To Launch X-Prize Attempt Oct. 2 · · Score: 2, Informative

During lunch time I took the subway and bus to their worksite in the former Downviews AFB in Toronto. The craft itself is now black with GoldenPalace.com logos but they say once a few more layers of thermal shielding are put on they will repaint it will all of their sponsor's logos and the Canadian flag. So its going to look like a NASCAR racer.

They still need to join two pieces of the body and it appeared that the interior where the rocket engine and fuel tanks and pipes would be mounted is completely empty. Also I'm pretty sure that some interior parts of the craft beneath the thermal shielding are made out of wood.

However they seemed confident so I wish them all the best.

So why do people rent from Netflix instead of just buying the movies? Why do people pay for HBO instead of just buying? Sometimes people would rather pay for continual updates then be up to date once.

$10 a month for all the music you want in a month sounds reasonable. There's likely sometimes new every month that you want. Yes you lose all the items if you stop paying but in the meantime you would gain a much greater selection.

  10. Poor Tests on ExtremeTech Wages War of the Codecs · · Score: 1

The article looks at encoding at low and medium bit rates because the idea is to see ini what format you should save video so you can send it by email or on a cd to grandma. Neither of which you are likely to do with clips from Monsters, Inc. (animation) or a action SF film. What you might do with a hollywood movie is back it up to a DVD+/-R for archivial purposes - in which case you want tests of high bit rates.

They should shoot their own video of household stuff - baby walking, baseball game, etc. and tested that.

With the belief that Europa has oceans of water covered by ice, it is considered a one of the most likely places for life to exist in the solar system outside of the Earth. The article being linked to is simply a few bits from a LA Times story which has much more information. The LA Times article has a number of quotes from movie executives that show they realize that word of mouth is key and that they wish to make movies that get good reviews from the initial fans. It does not indicate that the movie companies want to gag anyone - just figure out how to appeal to the initial viewers. In any case bad movies always get a negative word of mouth and good movies hopefully get a good word of movie - improved communications merely helps speeds this up.
