hee hee hee.. You aint too far off on your idea... Go rent a "earth shaker" truck like they ones they use in seismic surveys and set up shop out by their sensor range. *BRRRRUMP!* And watch as they go bonkers trying to figure out what in the world happened. If you were ever in the testing area when they were doing oil and gas surveys, then you know how it would be to their sensors.
In my 8+ years on IRC, I've helped countless users with PC problems, helped hunt down a script kiddie that was beating on a IRC network (that will go unnamed), founded a dozen or so channels that have gone and done quite well for themselves after naming a successor to (this is true!), I either single-handedly or helped saved 3 fellow users from killing themselves due to personal or financial problems.
You go download a IRC client, sign onto ANY IRC network, hang around for a month on a channel, then you tell ME that IRC is evil.
With groups or people, there will always be evil, but the balance of good always seems to outweigh evil in certain aspects.
IRC has simply unleashed the power of international relations upon each other. So we are unwittlingly amabassadors for our own state or country. So make the best of it folks, the author and the poster needs to get on IRC and experience it first-hand for a year, THEN make his or her report.
This one will be reviewed by the state supreme court, then get laughed out of there, I gurantee it or your money back!
(I always wanted to say that)
The judges in Utah, particulary Salt Lake City have always been a little on the funny side. I won't hold that agianst them, unless they pull a really stupid stunt like what the 8th Circuit in Cali did with the Pledge of Allegiance case.
I sure do.. It's called the HOSTS file. http://www.2fords.net/rchapin/hosts.zip It 's a miniature blacklist that holds retty much all known spamverts, adverts, and adware/spyware/malware sources. DL the file, (hey, it's text based, so you can open it with notepad to peer into it) then do a search on the system that you want to secure, then copy the new hosts file over onto the old one. My thanks to KazaaLite.nl for the original file and to Spybot Search and Destroy for updates. I've thrown in my own entries to keep the SOB's honest as well.
Oh, I completely agree with this statement.. Mod the parent up! When your employer screws with your times, not only the state, the fed, especially SSA, IRS, Labor Department, not to mention a couple of other departments kick in and start doing their hunt and peck routine as to why Mr. Hot Shot penny-pinching PHB is cheating Uncle Sam out of his money. If the hours trimmed turn into hundreds, if not thousands, kiss that company byebye, for that PHB, not to mention it's minions will wind up in Ft. Leavenworth, paying the piper, and saying hello to Mr. Tiny.
I said it once, and i'll say it agian.. Don't SCREW with the Fed when it comes to money! They'll hunt your pitiful caboose down anywhere, anytime, and drag you back to the states, no matter what it takes.
Just ask the PHBs over at Enron that bailed, then got dragged back home..
Radio Shack is under a Class Action lawsuit for this problem with their "Y" store managers and employees for hour trimming and other scams in regard to pay and salary.
I want to see Len get his ass nailed to the wall for the stunting that he and his brood has pulled.
This ruling is actually quite a good thing.. It prevents a inept city council from taking over their telephone service and pretty much wrecking it. This ensures that TRUE competition can be established when and if a contract expires or the company is forced to default on it.
BUT it won't stop the community from banding together after the city gets done with the a$$kicking and going Co-Op!
Read the bloody ruling BEFORE going off half-cocked, please?
This thread is pretty much owned by the Chicken Little Syndrome, for sure.
NERVA/KIWI was a cute run, but was messy as I recall.. About the only way at the time to get a NERVA vehicle into orbit was to perch it on top of a Saturn V and kick it off into orbit. With the premature termination of Apollo/Saturn, NERVA became a victim of circumstances. Bring back the Saturn V and then we'll put NERVA back in business.
So we got a higher compression protocol now. Just try to put it past Covad, Cox, Charter, SBC and all the rest of them to start using it. All those jokers will do is put a tigher cap on bandwidth useage when they apply it, not to mention attempting to twist the protocol to their advantage.
Mod it up man! This reeks of scam so much that I had to go wash my hands after reading their website, looking at the property assessment, seeing a 1.25 million house go for 100 bucks, this reeks of a slick con man hard at it.
But "basic economic sense"? What in the world happened to common sense? Oh, it must have gone out the window when the spammers started this neat little flood of "free this, free that, oh and we can enlarge your penis in 7 days"
Bah..
The world is changing agian folks, and spammers are effecting that change, only that the change will be to drop the Heavy End of The Hammer upon themselves.
Let's help them out with that, eh?
The bottom line is that marketing sucks. Period. It's best done in moderation and in good taste. Period!
Consider the fact that we would be taking a proven vehicle and increasing it's capability and performance by melding a proven design with modern technology. The instrument ring itself could be either eliminated or revamped, removing nearly 5,000 lbs of deadweight. The engines, combine them with the current shuttle fuel pumps and metering systems, could yield even more performance than their predecessors. Even the materials that the V was made of could be replaced with lighter, more stronger composites. Scratchbuilding the V would give us the workhorse that NASA has been looking for that will put us back on the moon to stay, as well as other missions. Let's not send the V to a early grave just because of some comparatively minor modifications to the infrastructure the surpport system has in place. The transport itself is a godsend for that it is still in operation. Rebuilding one of those would nearly kill the resurrection. It's the gantry and the actual launch pad itself that needs the rebuilding. One bay in the VAB is practially unused so it could be converted back into a High Bay for the V and the other bay still be used for the remaining shuttles.
I had just gotten up that morning, and switch my TV to nasatv and watched the final moments of the reentry. When they lost contact and started to make those comm check calls i knew something was amiss, so i kicked it over to CNN and they had it on the air that the shuttle had disintegrated. I switched it back to nasatv and watched as the control room crew go into their emergency mode collating all their data that they had before they lost contact.
I sat there on the edge of my bed, thinking back to the reentry of Apollo 13 and when they came in shallow, scaring the entire mission control, not to mention the rest of the world.
The shuttle has been a major money hog for the space program, as well as the nation herself. We HAD a heavy lifting vehicle. Hell, it laid down the heavy lifting record and it still stands today... The Saturn V and her sister ships.
You bring that baby back and we will have a multimission, easily modifiable vehicle capable of lifting multiple satellites that would make the Delta V's bust their rivets, to lofting entire space station modules, stuffed with spare parts and supplies. There were proposals on the boards that had the V lofting the atom-powered NERVA vehicle that would have made Mars easily, to additional modules for SkyLab, if that program never got the axe. One problem with the NERVA stack though is that the overall height would have been a good 10-20 feet higher than the door on the VAB.
Bring her back folks.. We'll be rolling in research projects that will be coming from the savings on the vehicle.
The model 6000 modem/router handles DHCP in a odd way and cannot be shut off.. to be able to use fixed IP addressing you would have to get ahold of a better router and hook the 6000 into it. Then rework the router to your heart's content.
Professional installation is free, unless the installer has to get atop of a roof, then there maybe a fee for him to do so.
My personal experience with one was with a client that had a DW6000 installed due to the wireless being shut down in the area (1500/mo for a T1, thanks verizon). The installer did a sloppy job installing it, putting a small portion of the dish under the eave (or overhang) of the roof, which mangled the signal and could not get a signal over 60%. He called me up to come out to check it out and discovered the discrepancy, then tried to call the installer to get him back out there. That jackal never returned any calls made by both me and the client! Talk about piss poor customer relations. I called up a fellow installer that is as reliable as the sun and moon, got him out there, and proceeded to pick up the pieces that the previous jerk left behind.
We managed to get the signal up to 75% due to the location of the dish and proceeded to install a wireless system, using linksys gear. Haven't had a problem since.
When your installer completes his work, make him sit down with you before you sign the paperwork, CONFIRM that the cables are not kinking or the crimps appear that they may fall apart at any time. and go through the system diagnostics with your browser and MAKE SURE that your signal is a solid 80% or higher! It should not wobble more than a percentage point.. If it does then there is something obstructing the dish and the object would need to be removed or relocated.
IF you get someone that appears that he did not do his work properly, get his DirecWay/DirecTV installer number and call it in to customer service. REQUEST that another tech come out to set things to right, on their nickle even!!
I've heard good things about those 3D prototypers and the results that they have produced. I've heard of at least one prototyper actually used to recreate a replacment part and put to use. That part may still be hard at work too.
Just for drill, I went through their emarket as if i were to buy a iPod mini and came up with this interesting tactic. You can personalize each iPod with a message, making your own statement on it.
BUT!
Here's the kicker, once your graffiti has been etched onto the back of it, it's non-returnable.
So much for their vaunted effort to cover their collective asses when the original iPod's batteries started to croak.
I'm going to refrain from comment until SuSe comes out with a kernel that is optimized for the 64 bit chipsets.
Load that mutha onto both systems that are matched as close as they can get, then run RAW benches, comparing how they can crunch the numbers.
After that, then run benches using the fancypants applets that have all the bells and whistles and see if they add up.
I seem to recall when the G4 hit the market, they had a raw benching comparison between it and the K7 (Thunderbird) chip.. The G4 got edged out in the numbers, barely! I sent the review to a fellow that is a well known mac fanatic, I heard later that he was mooing for quite some time afterwards.
For I think they found Cthulhu's vacation cottage!
Waking up the old rugsucker himself MIGHT win a few folks the Darwin awards... or worse!

I'll take Octol, thank you!
BTW, Octol is what they use to initate nuclear reactions in atomic devices (IE, The Bomb)

Two spy/mal/adware cleaners: Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D,
And a Good hosts file that will deal with any future incursions: Http://www.2fords.net/rchapin/hosts.zip
Download the zipped file, then do a search for your old hosts file, backup, and replace it.

OK, easy solution, tie a rope around the LCII and use it as a boat anchor. Then go get a Free BSD system.
Shove the card into a PC, and set it's firmware to 10 base simplex mode, as slow as the poor thing can get, then cram it into a LCII.
A RTL813X based chip 10/100 PCI eithernet card will run with ease in a LCII, and the drivers for it are readily available online.
http://www.driverguide.com will have the driver archived for the mac, particulary the OS 7.X version.
I do believe that realtek.com will have the reference drivers for the mac as well..
