Layers came with version 3.0, praise Jebus. They made Photoshop an app I felt I was working with rather than around.

I'd say the biggest and most welcome changes, tho, occurred in version 5.0 when Adobe (finally) added multiple undo and editable type. Not that actions, adjustment layers, smart objects and the new non-destructive filters weren't also very welcome...

I would also consider Adobe's student pricing at the time Photoshop was beginning on the road to domination. The last time I was in school (maybe 15 years ago), I was able to purchase Photoshop (2.0 or 2.5, I believe) for about $40. Pretty affordable, even for a grad student. That pricing had to help its widespread adoption.

These days, the education price for Photoshop is $299. That's a lot of beer when you're a student with access to massive bandwidth...

Their only other option is simply not to allow the file to be played back. Remember, MS (usually) don't set these dumb rules, that's done by the media companies. The same thing will apply to Apple...

Actually, Apple's very good about preventing their apps from doing anything that might upset the media companies. Two examples come to mind: the default screen capture hot keys are disabled during DVD playback, and you have a limited number of chances to change your DVD's region. However, they do not disable your hardware to prevent other apps from using your ports/cards/whatever in what ways they seem fit.

    Found this in the OLPCWiki:

Will OLPC spin-off a commercial subsidiary?
The idea is that a commercial subsidiary could manufacture and sell a variation of the OLPC in the developed world. These units would be marked up so that there would be a significant profit which can be plowed into providing more units in countries who cannot afford the full cost of one million machines.
The discussions around this have talked about a retail price of 3× the cost price of the units.
