They play for the same reason that people play slot machine games against a computer programmed to make a profit... addiction
We're playing against people, not machines. Sometimes people agree to trade risk and/or money for entertainment or value. "Addictions" have little evidence of providing any value to anyone.
Layers came with version 3.0, praise Jebus. They made Photoshop an app I felt I was working with rather than around.
I'd say the biggest and most welcome changes, tho, occurred in version 5.0 when Adobe (finally) added multiple undo and editable type. Not that actions, adjustment layers, smart objects and the new non-destructive filters weren't also very welcome...
I would also consider Adobe's student pricing at the time Photoshop was beginning on the road to domination. The last time I was in school (maybe 15 years ago), I was able to purchase Photoshop (2.0 or 2.5, I believe) for about $40. Pretty affordable, even for a grad student. That pricing had to help its widespread adoption.
These days, the education price for Photoshop is $299. That's a lot of beer when you're a student with access to massive bandwidth...
I think the Web Developer Extension is one of the few things that keep me coming back to FireFox. It also doesn't crash like Safari does when closing windows after watching Poker After Dark episodes.
Regarding AdBlock, tho: SafariBlock is pretty close.
Their only other option is simply not to allow the file to be played back. Remember, MS (usually) don't set these dumb rules, that's done by the media companies. The same thing will apply to Apple...
Actually, Apple's very good about preventing their apps from doing anything that might upset the media companies. Two examples come to mind: the default screen capture hot keys are disabled during DVD playback, and you have a limited number of chances to change your DVD's region. However, they do not disable your hardware to prevent other apps from using your ports/cards/whatever in what ways they seem fit.
However, to me it's like someone giving me their grandfather's antique watch and saying "I'm giving this to you, but only if you agree that you'll wear it."
It's the very least you could do considering the seven long years of suffering...
Will OLPC spin-off a commercial subsidiary? The idea is that a commercial subsidiary could manufacture and sell a variation of the OLPC in the developed world. These units would be marked up so that there would be a significant profit which can be plowed into providing more units in countries who cannot afford the full cost of one million machines. The discussions around this have talked about a retail price of 3× the cost price of the units.
But fyi: "professional" == someone pays me to do it. (Not that I'm doing it lately; even at $50-90 an hour, it's still the most tedious work ever. Hmm... Maybe your "professional" little icons would make it more fun!)
But by all means keep sending those golden retriever strawmen my way! Cuz you're right; they sometimes jump right into the monitor, like in that A-ha video! They just confuse my color sense like crazy! And chew on my scroll bars!
It's Slashdot; just use 'the gripping hand' for the third hand...
As long as I see 'SAMSUNG' on Chelsea's kit? DIAF Samsung.
Maya rocked, fool.

Also: Sawyer makes the con game look well sexy.

So much fail.

Not that it will pass, but it would be pleasant not to be a criminal for burning the DVDs I own for viewing on my PSP...

good games like Populous, One on One, Wasteland...
And Archon! Can't forget Archon...
Tho looking back, the graphics aren't quite as awesome as I remember...

I think Ali G helped bring about some awareness for Buzz Lightyear (who is NOT jealous of Louis Armstrong).

Found this in the OLPCWiki:

Nice to know I'd be thinking of the children rather that stealing their laptops...

Am I evil for looking forward to picking up my OLPC on the black market (or eBay)?
If I am, I blame the hand crank and high-res black-and-white screen mode for greasing my slide into the dark side...

"Little House on the Prairie - IN SPACE" failed. Get over it.
I liked Firefly & Serenity a lot, but that was awesome!
Thanks.

Downloads available for all of them, and everyone but The Fairies (London) play regularly in NYC.
Or does my sarcasm-o-meter need new batteries...?

Decoration is irrelevant to serious tool users.
Heh. Yeah, as a professional retoucher, why would I mind all that neon green on screen while I'm doing color correction?
It's just irrelevant decoration!
