  1. Republicans on Attempt to Apply Decency Standards to Cable/Satellite Television · · Score: -1, Flamebait

I thought Republicans were supposed to be the party of smaller government? Oh, that's right. They're in favor of smaller government when it comes to regulating their campaign contributors but much much bigger government when it comes to regulating what you do in the privacy of your own home.

How these people can call themselves conservative is beyond me.

Some of the cable companies (Charter, for example) require you to have digital cable to get broadband. So you're looking at a minimum of $90/month for your combined service with all the wonderful tech support they provide.

To be fair, cable co's are not generally known for their ability to deliver a one way analog signal particularly well, let alone two way digital. And yet people still pay $80 a month for a crappy service and worse customer service.

I am a very happy satellite customer and would never consider cable ever again. I would rather not have television than deal with a cable company ever again. Thus far the sat co's attempts at rolling their own DVR's have been lackluster, and I hope they decide to stick with TiVo instead.

I've been chasing the elusive "quiet PC" for five years. I've bought "silent" power supplies , sound damping material, "silent" hard drive enclosures, and have had no luck. Sure, I reduced noise dramatically, but it was not eliminated completely.

The mini has more power than my last x86 box (Athlon XP 2400, 1G RAM) and makes just slightly more noise than my linksys router. I have to put my ear right next to it to hear anything at all.

Because insurance companies donate heavily to political campaigns and any attempt to change things is met with overwhelming pr campaigns.

On example, back in the early 90's there was a ballot initiative in California to institute some mild insurance industry reform. Supporters managed to raise a few hundred thousand dollars to promote the initiative. The industry spent well over twenty million dollars on a campaign that basically said 'this initiative is anti-American, it will destroy the state economy and result in everyone in the state having no insurance at all.'

The initiative passed overwhelmingly in spite of this, amazingly. And last I checked, CA's economy was on par with the rest of the country, and roughly the same portion of the population has insurance.

There is a very good reason for this. The prison-industrial complex is made up of companies that make lots and lots of campaign donations. In return for this, they get more and more legislation guaranteeing them more inmates.

When prison is a for-profit venture, rather than a safe-society venture, then the powers that be have a vested interest in throwing as many people in jail as possible. The number one purpose of our prison system is not rehabilitation, correction, safety, or even punishment. It is to turn a profit.
