  1. Code for America on Ask Slashdot: How Can My Code Help? · · Score: 1

There are other non-profits out there that are trying to help people in your situation. Take for example, Code for America (http://www.codeforamerica.org/).

They could help you get your project in front of talented developers that are motivated to write software to make government work better.

  7. Re:Hey, that's my idea! on Reznor Follows Radiohead, Offers Free Album · · Score: 1

Actually, a lot of bands play songs from upcoming albums when they go out on tour. It is called "touring in support of your new album". That's how they get their new music out there for fans.

That is how many of those independent bands you speak of get the publicity for their new album... not the other way around.

Sure, the latest Hannah Montana concert is driven by the TV show and mass media assault driven by some ad agency... but many real musicians publicize their albums by getting out there and playing.

  8. Re:Yet another case made for homeschooling... on Internet Pranks in Schools · · Score: 1

No joke. Homeschooled people are not socially adept. I see the faults in public schools, but I will never send my children to private schools or homeschool them. The way I see it, you're trying to control the environment with homeschooling... keeping your kids away from outside influences. But someday, they will have to enter the real world. They will not be prepared.

1000kg is only about 2200 lbs... a Bentley Continental weighs in at 5200 - 5500 lbs depending on the trim. The Arnage starts in at around 5700 lbs.

Thankfully they show an Audi Sedan in the video on the building's website. That means that even if it was an A8L it would still be 4700 lbs. Even the Q7 only tips the scales at about the same weight as the lightest Bentley.

Lets just be grateful they won't all be driving supercharged Range Rovers (5800 lbs) or Hummer H2s (6400 lbs).

  11. Re:Cars on Dvorak on Microsoft Confusing the Market · · Score: 1

I'm gonna hafta go ahead and disagree with you on that. The problem there is that some of the civics(EX models) come with a little thing called VTEC. Not quite the same Kernal there... and that doesn't even take into account the Si model.

I think the real point here is that if people care enough to do some research, they will be able to figure it out. Or, they will get a computer smart relative or friend to do it for them.

And since when do two 10" subs and a neon cost $1400?

  12. Re:frist post on Play Random Sounds for E-Mail Notifications? · · Score: 1

    Simple solution:

Write a windows service that watches the directory with the sound file (.wav, etc...) in it.

Every time the file is accessed, have the service copy a random file from another sound directory over top of that file.

This can be done very easily in c# or vb.net... code samples available online.

    Just an idea.

Its not the body kit that really bogs them down, its the hundreds of pounds of amp and subwoofer in the trunk...

And a wing at the drag strip on a FWD car wouldn't be much help, but at the track (the kind with corners to turn) a wing is actually useful.

But you are correct, most the cars that you see with a "park bench" rear wing never actually spend any time on a track.

This isn't a popularity contest. It doesn't matter who is more famous. The people on this list are the ones that have changed the way we do things with computers. In this respect, I think Steve Jobs should be number one. His decisions at Apple spread throughout the entire computer industry. Apple decides to use USB and Firewire... now they are "standard equipment". Apple ditches the floppy drive... now you have to ask for one if you order dell, ibm or gateway. And all those PC modders are just jealous of the pretty mac cases ;-).
