  2. Make a few decisions first on How Should I Teach a Basic Programming Course? · · Score: 1

    1) Is it a "programming" course or a "computer science" course? There is a difference.

If you are teaching them how to program, then you need to cover background things like "what is source code" and "how to compile a program and what that means" and "now that it is compiled what do I do". Then you need to introduce typical programming constructs - loops, conditional logic, representing math operations, etc.

If you jump right into the web stuff it's almost completely missing all of the basic concepts.

Not only do I own an SUV, but my carbon footprint is most likely ridiculously lower than yours given that I live in NYC.

I for one, look forward to the day that my car is seen as an oddity on the highway. On the rare occasion I drive it, it will be that much more enjoyable. Enjoy smelling your farts while you drive your Prius.

What irony? Dude, there were supreme court cases decided in the 1880's that still apply to software today. The Lotus 1-2-3 vs. Excel lawsuit from a couple decades ago, for one classic example. I don't know why anyone would find this ironic at all. It's not even a new phenomenon.

  14. It's configurable (and it runs on SCO) on Fighting Back Against Ghost Calls · · Score: 2, Informative

Having worked (briefly) for a telemarketer, the "dialer" is a server with telcom hardware attached (ours was a SCO Unix box, ironically) and you feed it numbers to dial. Makes sense, right?

Long story short, to up your sales numbers you tell it to dial more numbers in advance. If the setting is too high, nobody's there on your end to take the call because they're all already talking to someone. The more numbers you dial the better chance someone's going to answer. There's a pacing algorithm too which takes into account the number of reps available and average call times and many other variables - but since upping the number typically gets you better sales figures... yeah you'll never guess what people do - they up the number.

There are federal regulations in place, however, specifically to limit this practice. Hard to enforce. These calls are probably not coming from a big and established telemarketer, but rather a small startup shop.
