    I STILL have not received my CPU from TigerDirect... BAH.

    I called, was on hold 35 minutes, and they had no idea when some processors might arrive - and the salesman stated that there were no open POs yet to order more... UNREAL!

    I cancelled my order and went with NewEgg. Live and learn.

    NEVER AGAIN, TigerDirect. UGH.

    Ordered an AMD CPU from them weeks ago... web page said it was in stock... guess what?

    Yup. Backordered... 21 days at least.

    Never again... I'll pay the extra cash for a reliable supplier.

    Umm, not always the case.

    I had to get a CCNA for my current position, and my boss used to do my exact job. He is SO far removed from the PHB in Dilbert. And HIS boss used to do the same job...

    Started with a Sinclair ZX-80...

    Moving up to the C-64 was the Big Time! I taught myself Basic and then quickly moved on to 6502 assembly.

    Spent months decoding the kernel ROM, then moved on to cracking copy-protection routines in the 1541.

    Ultimately I was burning my own custom kernel ROMs, with the cassette stuff taken out, and a DOS wedge (remember @$ to get a DIR?) installed.

    Ah, memories!

    I bought one, once upon a time. Didn't want to wait for the harcover version. Hilarity ensued:

    1) Price was the same as hardcover, $24.95 WTF?

    2) You could only read it on the PC you downloaded it to. WTF?!?

    3) You could not make a backup of it. If it got hosed, kiss your $24.95 goodbye WTF!?!??!?!

    No more of that crap for me.

    And the funniest thing about all this? You can download a DRM-free version of just about any book you want for free on IRC and other places. The publishing industry need to quit following the RIAA's footsteps and instead learn from someone who is doing it right.

    The RIAA writes the laws, (ok, their puppets like Berman in Congress do) and they can do anything they damn well please.

    That charge still exists (at least in my area), though it does not get itemized on the phone bill.

    My father's bill was $2.00 less than mine, but he finally gave in when his ISP stopped accepting rotary calls after an equipment upgrade.

    When I was SysAdmin at a moderate-sized ISP, we built a squid cache and forced our users to surf through it via a redirect on the router.

    Out of curiousity, I often ran various scripts on the squid access logs, to see what our users were up to.

    40-45 percent of the traffic was pron or pron-related....

    Found a lot of interesting URLs that way too ;)

    Also agreed.

    I didn't want to learn vi, but I've been on some systems where it was the only editor installed. No Emacs, no Pico, just vi.

    So, learn it now with no pressure. Don't wait to learn it while trying to edit a config file on a downed production server!

    I've done it, for sites that only accept IE or Netscape....

    Someone with better skills than me, and perhaps younger and without a family should indeed move to one of these countries!

    If I were 18-20 again, and just starting out, I think it would be great to move somewhere I could make a real difference. Sadly, the USA is not somewhere you can make a difference these days.

    This reminds me of the Domino Theory as the USA applied it to SE Asia in the 1960's, as the main excuse to go into Vietnam.

    Microsoft cannot allow Venezuela to do this. If any country switches to Open Source, and it is a success, Microsoft is in deep shit. Other countries would follow the lead, and soon Microsoft would be forced to implement huge price cuts just to have any chance at all.

    If this is a success in Venezuela, I believe that in the near future the US Govt will be one of the very few running any version of Windows. Billy and Steve will throw however much money it takes at Washington to keep things that way.

    But can they buy off the whole world?

    My problem was a corrupted RPM, somehow corrupted during the download (shrug?). Also, my ISP's mail server has been losing mail again, so I missed their original reply to me.

    Anyway, it was a happy ending. Gavriel and David from Transgaming helped me get things sorted. They were fantastic, and I'd recommend Transgaming to anyone!
