  1. Linux: Foundation Software on OSDL and The Free Standards Group to Merge · · Score: 3, Insightful

Is this a step in the direction to making Linux the defacto standard on which to build all future software? Such a platform will be needed one day, as security and reliability become all the more important, reinventing the wheel at this level will be no more.

Linux is the Foundation Software of the future.

  6. smaller technology firms on Tech Jobs For a Student? · · Score: 1

In 2000 i gained a traineeship in Software Engineering. The traineeship was terminated three years later which left me with out a job and although i had completed two TAFE courses (Cert III & IV info tech) i had only a half completed three year uni course.

I looked for work for 6 months, applying for upto 6-10 jobs a fortnight. I didn't get a job, so i went back to uni. Only a month after finishing my computer science course i was well on my way to obtaining my current job as Software Engineer with BAE Systems Australia.

I have the thought that it depends on what your looking for. If you want to purley a coder/programmer/analysis, then you dont need a university or graduate education - although having one will no doubt attract larger corporations to you. With out a higher education, you are more than likely to get jobs as Web developer, application developer, mobile developer etc. Look for where technical skills are more important than say, engineering. Engineering requires a lot of over head to gaureentee a product is of some quality... So look for smaller firms in who have a focus on bringing technology to individual consumers.

But I'm worried that open source projects arn't analysing their code themselves. Perhaps its better to have this stuff out sourced to professionals? But surley theres professionals that wouldn't mind do this in their free time to benifit a project, like it seems someone has done here.

Also, cant this process be automated. Like testing. Why is some type of automatic analysis done on every Release candidate.

Would it be that hard to do? Why dont they do it already? Are they afraid of the work it will create?

Along with this type of analysis, programs should be put through regular profiling so as to be able to spot potential bottle necks.

Before veiwing any text documents, editors should have a optional transformation on startup, ripping away anything that doesn't conform to a users preference. For example, on c source files, the editor could run the text through a source formatter, presenting it to the user exactly the way he/she likes it to be set.

Then, who cares how things really are, we have our preference automatically assured!

This could perhaps be extended to changing between different spellings, I.e. Americanish => English.

  12. Love it on AllofMp3.com Breaks Silence · · Score: 2, Informative

I love this site. When I was younger I used to download music or get it off friends. At the time I used to try and justify this by saying a lot of the music I was copying I had never heard and I would buy future albums of those artists.

Now I've started downloading music again, although in not really huge quantities through this website. I download a lot of what I've never heard. One instance, I heard a track at the end of a movie that a really liked. I looked into it and I bought the entire album and the previous album by the same artist.

The pricing structure is good. In fact I'd say fantastic. You pay for what you get and because the prices are so reasonable, you perhaps buy what you wouldn't normally as you don't necessarily care if you don't like it... each song is only 10-20 cents (Australian).

I hope Allofmp3 get to keep their licence and artists and recording labels alike see the advantages in such a flexible pricing structure. You've got a love the fact you can also choose your codec as well as bit rate.

    Cheers AllOfMp3!

  22. Good Idea on To Flush Or Not To Flush · · Score: 1

This is an exceptionally interesting topic. Many dont perhaps know just how bad Australias Water supplies have been in the last few years. Very bad. Many people think Australias population could not sustain any more growth. Many other people think we should start working towards reducing our population.

Most of the nations main water supplies during the last 3 years have been bellow 20%. Some, including the largest have been well bellow this, in to the single figure percentile range.

Anything that saves water is worth while considering. There are now perminite water restrictions in the state of victoria (i believe), such as watering during the day (prohibited, perhaps with other conditions). This sounds like a good idea.

Open irrigation seems to be the largest talking point on saving water and i'd think that may be a better area to focuss on now, whilst its a problem. If its ever fixed, i'd recommend coming back to the to flush vs not to flush topic.
