    A Service Pack provides an easy mechanism to identify major code refreshes. This way when handed two sets of install disks a person can tell if they have newer version than was originally distributed.

    Now for the most part I agree, lots of this should be available for download separately. The update process in windows is tolerable. However there may be enough inter dependancies among these various updates to require them all to be available in one neat package.

    I know people who will not use Windows Update but they will apply a service pack.

    As for that 250Mb size, I believe that was the special network administrators version that everyone should not have been downloading, let alone the fact that most only got it because it was on P2P network.

    Frankly I don't care for Hummers, I think they are a waste of money. However I will not begrudge someone for owning one. Anything can be justified and anyone can dismiss another's justification.

    The key is, which side are you on?

    How do you justify more than one computer? After all millions get by with just one!

    How do you justify using a 4 seat car to drive yourself to work?

    How do you justify living outside of town thereby making public transportation unable to serve you?

    How does a family justify an Expedition over a Camry?

    Yes Hummers annoy people, but I know people annoyed that Hybrids are marketed as great environment savers while completely dodging the issue of what happens to the batteries when their life is up.

    The best part of personal freedom is also one of its most annoying. You are free to justify and act on your desires just as much as the next guy provided such actions and desires don't have a direct adverse affect on another person, or an unlawful affect. I would gladly have a world full of Hummers than the opposite, and I drive a Miata and ride a motorcycle as well.

    Which btw, how does anyone justify a recreational vehichle? Let alone how does one justify a motorcycle? I justify it to myself because I enjoy it and its my choice.

    Make your own choice, just don't expect someone to agree with it and don't villify someone because of theirs.

    Also rail cannot serve just-in-time delivery that is used by many companies. It is a rare case where rail can be used to deliver more quickly.

    Rail is good for bulk items and really bulk shipments. Examples are like Coal, Wheat, etc. You can even more cars by rail but even then it is done in very large numbers going to a major distribution point.

    What does this have to do with solar power? Not much except that in a future world we may have to do more in providing separate areas for semis and cars to exist.

    It implies that there were American's to take all the jobs that were sent overseas.

    As for jobs that are marketing, support, or admin. These are all valid positions and should not be discounted just because you or someone else doesn't feel they are the right jobs. I know quite a few people who make a great living in marketing, let alone support or similar.

    A lot of companies are overseas simply because to compete overseas you have to have a presence. A lot of people in the news industry ignore this requirement because it does not generate the headlines they desire, let alone drive their own agenda.

    What it comes down to is that many people just need to grow up and realize that there are jobs worth taking and its up to them to do so. People, including the media, spend to much time dwelling on the actions of big corporations, many of who are truly multinational, because it makes them feel better when they can create a "Bad guy" instead of taking account of themselves. The majority of jobs in the US are not from big businesses but instead from the small business. Lastly too many people are upset they are offered only what they are worth and not what they think they are worth. Time to move past the selfish attitude and realize they are not the center of the universe.

    AOL is marketing a $299 computer to those who don't currently have PCs. This market is mainly seniors, blacks, and hispanics.

    Yes AOL is a royal pain, but it is in a unique position to market low cost internet access machines.

    Properly configured Linux boxes would reduce the risk that many of their users already present the web and rest of us. It would also fill the needs of the majority of their users. Most never leave the AOL installed programs (my grandmother is a great example of that).

    If not AOL then attempting bundling with an internet provider would still provide benefits. It could also be used as the basis to market to schools.

    So what if the G5 is cheaper? The task at hand for the XPS is something the G5 cannot do. If your looking for a lower priced machine they are many many alternatives to this machine or a G5.

    However there are too many people who won't think that its a joke

    Actually, one uncle, my brother-in-law, and 2 of my cousins benefitted immensely from the tax cuts. See, they qualify as wealthy by some people's standards. Yet what in fact they are is small businessmen. They gross between 250-1M a year with differing nets depending on which industry they work in. (the cousins own an industrial roof ing business, the uncle is a home builder, the brother in law as renovator).

    The one common thing, the economy has picked up for them. The lower tax load has expanded all 3 businesses. Still the tax burden on these small businessmen will choke you if you saw what they put up with. Just adding another employee is a royal pain in the ass, let alone certain breakpoints (25, 50, 100 employees).

    If anything we should ditch the whole scheme of taxes and replace it with a national sales tax akin to fairtax.org

    The article is bunk because it doesn't go into enough detail about what IT is. I know web designers that are IT and mainframers who scoff at the notion a web designer is IT.

    Oh, if your unemployed more than 6 months you have a problem. I know of NO ONE who remained unemployed that long except by inaction or personal choice. You need to reexamine what your asking for. If its not available where your at then move or change. Do not fall into the trap of blaming others for your misfortune. Fortune favors those who take the initiative.

    So while it may look better to not have to put $80 dollars in gas into the car weekly it is only because you prepaid it through the premium of buying a hybrid car.

    Until they cost the same as a similarly equipped vehicle these only are good for CAFE and feeling good about yourself (while ignoring the obvious fact you lost money on the deal)

    It does bog down in places but I have yet to tweak my settings.

    Level load times are high. It has been a long time since a game came along that made me consider buying new hardware.

    We have a few "problem" intersections where I live. The put up electronic monitors to capture photos of people running the lights.

    While initially they did it as a test they now use it for enforcement. They issued over 180 citations in the first weekend alone. Needless to say as people gets these citations the number of people violating the lights is going down resulting in a much safer environment.

    So while machines internal to the vehicle may not be the best solution to a problem external machines do have valid uses.

    Most poverty results becauses of abuses of the local governments. Go do research into how much aid is spent on Africa that acutally reaches those who need it.

    Do not begrudge people for how they spend THEIR money. To deny people the right to spend their money as they see fit would rob these these same poor of even more. Success and profit from that success drives people to new heights and opens many doors that no one may have ever dreamed of looking at. Yes some people may spend their money on themselves but it does pass through the economy and may be applied better by someone down the chain.

    To sum it up, if application of money had to pass a "fairness" test then what would drive people to earn more? Nothing. It feels "good" to say that //you// or anyone else would do it for the benefit of others but those people don't exist, or if they do they only appeared after they made too much for themselves to handle.

    Besides, this keeps the Russians busy in the space industry and who knows, one of them might one day invent something with funds derived from these ventures that solves a major world problem. Far better than sending 20million to some rat hole in the third world to have it spent by a dictator on a palace.

    More people would die if Drug companies could not recoup their cost. Where would these new drugs come from if someone didn't think they could make money on them?

    Governments? Get real, look at the majority of drugs that better life and see how many were the result of a government project?

    What you have is a group who knows how to play on the hearts of the public. They go out of their way to never mention the costs involved to treat the drugs and instead throw up pictures of little kids and sick adults, some who the drugs they claim they need won't help. Its called pushing your agenda by scapegoating.

    Yes Doctors without Borders does good, but they aren't always telling the whole truth. That whole truth involves one major thing I mentioned, the same drugs would not exist if groups like this had their way where these drugs were basically giving away.

    As it stands now it is Western consumers who are paying for this research and the fees charged to most 3rd world countries are paltry in comparison.

    What next? Threaten to confiscate as in South Africa. That went over really well....

    Theft by arms is far far worse than patents ever were.

    It takes a machine of far less complexity to issue on $20.00 increments. It also reduces the chances for human error, like loading tens in the twenties slot. That of course could be overcome with a machine capable of reading the bills it dispenses, but your back to that "complexity" thing.

    I lost money on one auction and could not get PayPal to reverse it until they "had time to study it". Well PayPal decided the payment was fradulent but told me I had to take it up with E-Bay.

    Well E-Bay told me the account of the fradulent trader had been closed and that I needed to take it up with PayPal.

    Ebay OWNS PayPal.

    Biggest damn circle jerk I have seen recently.

    Fortunately STOP PAYMENT works wonders with a credit card.

    The US for the most part hasn't changed, but the world has. Instead of 1 or 2 countries that could threaten the prosperity of this country or any other for that matter, we now live in a world where technology has made it such that any crackpot with money or people can threaten anyone else.

    Alas, its these countries with moons and stars on their flags that have yet to advance into the 20th century. There way of thinking is what is holding the whole world back.

    We also have a deficit that is rapidly shrinking as the economy wakes up as a result of the tax cuts.

    Just like under Kennedy, Reagan, and now Bush tax cuts lead to increased government revenue within 2 years.

    The problem I have with Bush is that he won't VETO anything! He spends just like the worst of the liberals he claims are bad.

    Oh, our deficits are not record, especially when compared to the GDP.

    Any money paid by a corporation to a government comes from individuals. There is nothing gained by an individual should a corporation pay more in taxes. The only winner in this game is the government which uses the corporation to hide behind while once again taking money from the individual.

    All these people clamoring for higher corporate taxes have their heads up their asses. Most of this fed by the idiot media who need both an oppressor and a victim in order to have a story. Nothing looks better than making a faceless corporation as the oppressor, after all its not like you can hurt its feelings.

    In the end its all the same, the government benefits and the ignorant keep on complaining its not fair that so-and-so corp didn't pay enough taxes.

    Face it, regardless of the fact you may not do business with one particular business you pay their taxes with every purchase you make.

    He isn't preaching to us. He is preaching to the masses. There are more than enough people around here content to NEVER OWN a movie and instead forever rent from BlockBuster or get it on demand from Cable. I suspect there are more of these people than of us.

    As for the TV knowing what you want to watch, well it might never know what you really want to watch but TV now does nearly the same thing. How many people do you hear of who have to be home for a certain show or such? TIVO is freeing some from that chain, and if they can have their show on demand, and their viewing habits are tracked, and they will be, they will be watching what they want to watch because that is what by analysis is fed to their TV. Also, who says it has to be ONE program? The TV is just as likely to present you a list of things it knows you watched before and let you choose, hence it "knows" what you want to see.

    Nothing magical about his claims. Nothing requiring silly amounts of money. Most if not all is done to today or very closely related.

    Too many anti-MS anti-Gates bigots can see anything but hate.

    Instead we have some egotistical jerks who want NASA to go save their precious Hubble when they know damn well that the Shuttle isn't safe, its just lucky.

    The best bet for NASA is to either shut down the shuttle fleet or use it only for shuttling people to the station. Another disaster, especially linked to something high profile, will kill NASA.

    I would rather the Hubble burn up before risking anyone on the shuttle.

    Yes, a lot of it has to do with popularity.

    I think another major woe of IE is that it tried to hard to be the solution to everything. Hence it got co-opted into insecurity.

    People are not going to flock to Linux unless it supports the software they want. Trouble is, much of the software they want comes from companies that get maligned by the very same people supporting Linux.

    Then add to that the games that people want to play, or their kids want to play, and there is little reason for anyone to switch over.

    Let alone the fact that work will not support ANYTHING non-MS/Novell and it becomes pointless to have something different at home when it provides no real benefit. A good Windows user is safe from the majority of problems. Frankly I would not want the ones who are not good Windows users to have Linux. All we need is a bunch of insecure linux boxes to attract the bad guys.

    Quite willing to spend your money where they see fit even if you totally disagree with it.

    Quite willing to block your access to material of questionable content, but they set the standards.
