What's interesting though is that since you are effectively taking an average (not a mathematical mean necessarily, but broadly speaking an average), any individual answer (even the smart people's answers) could still be worse than the crowdsourced answer. I heard a story on NPR about a crowdsourcing project where this exact thing happened. I am sorry, I can't remember the details. In this case though, you can't necessarily build an algorithm, because it will still give an inferior answer to the crowdsourced answer. Or at least, you have to totally change how you frame the problem and try again all over.

I tell my dog to go get a toy. I've preassigned a numerical value between 1 & 10 to each of her toys. Whichever one she brings me, I cube the resulting number, and then divide by today's date (1 thru 31), and then floor the result. I get my yellow pages and turn to this page. I take the time of day as a percentage of 24-hour time (so 0700 would be 29.2%) and go that percentage down either the left or right column on that page, depending on the phase of the moon (left column for waxing, right column for waning.) Whichever phone number is there, I call. I then ask whoever picks up to think of a number.

People on /. are supposed to be smart. Doing your own taxes using the IRS forms and instructions is not that hard. I have done my own taxes (including schedules A, B, D) for many years now and I've never even been audited. People seem to be so terrified of being audited that they pay someone else for a service or software product just to make themselves feel better. It's the same damn data that your sending to the IRS. If that data is accurate there won't be a problem. Come on, people.

  23. Re:Diesel on Hybrid Car Owners Not Likely To Buy Another Hybrid · · Score: 1

Almost all PickUp owners I know with Diesels bought them for towing heavy loads.

Towing is most dependent on torque, which a small diesel engine has plenty of. A big gasoline V8 has plenty of power, but uses more fuel to get it. And their torque numbers are not impressive. A small diesel would be great for towing a small camper or boat, or hauling a small load in the bed, and wouldn't guzzle fuel like a gas V8.
