Check out a program called DriveCrypt. It'll let you do that or stenography. Unfortunatly it's Windows only at the moment, but it works great for me, stuck in a Windows world without a brick in sight.::Digitac
Ok, so I'm not pro-Big Brother or anything, and I like being anonymous most of the time, but on the other hand think of the uses for this.
You buy a car, code in the RFID tags of the drivers who you want to drive the car and leave the keys at home! It'd be like those smart keys on Prius and other cars. I know not everyone would like this, but I'd love to be able to get rid of my key chain and replace it with a (hopefully secure) RFID tag. Doors, cars, computers! As long as I have control over it and who/what uses it, I want one.
On the topic of copying the card, can't they be "finger printed"? I remember old analog cell phones used to get cloned a lot until the cell phone companies started looking at the variations of the signal that each phone put out. Apparently due to imperfections in the chips each phone would transmit just a little bit differently, off frequency or something. Couldn't something similar apply to RFID? I know they don't transmit per-say but maybe there is something there to use as a fingerprint.::Digitac
This was true in the mid 90's when I was growing up, and going to school out there. We used to have a lot of smog alerts and some days you couldn't see the nearby mountians. It's really gotten a lot better, I don't recall seeing a smog alert in recent years, much less a higher level one. The the progress that has been made in recent memory can continue, then hopefully smog will be something we complain about because of the very sensitive meters and not because we can see it.::Digitac
You know something? You're right. I have a NetGear router (don't laugh, I got it free), and I'm NOT going to upgrade it. Why bother updating the firmware just to change the password? Instead, mine is just going to go into the trash where it belongs and I'll set up a Linux router or something.::Digitac
"..what if you had a little speech translator that fit in your ear, recognized nearby spoken speech in foreign languages, traslated it to your language, and used a voice synthesizer to repeat it back to you in your native tongue."
While we're not having power problems here in downtown LA, I just saw 5 unmarked emergency vehicles go by with lights and sirens blaring, followed by the SWAT van. For not being related to terrorists, it sure has someone here spooked.
Then again, maybe it was an add for the movie...::digitac
These children, they wrote, seem ''to be aware of information in some raw or interim state prior to it being formed into the 'ultimate picture.''' Most astonishing, they went on, ''the mental machinery for performing lightning fast integer arithmetic calculations could be within us all.''
So does that mean we are IN the Matrix or we ARE the Matrix. This is a very important disticntion I need to figure out before I unplug myself...
Healing ADD by Daniel G. Amen. It describes 6 different types of ADD/ADHD and talks about symptoms and tested cures for each. I thought it was a load of bull at first, but after reading through the symtoms of the different types I was able to recognise that one of the lined up perfectly with the symptoms I have (whis is ADD, not ADHD) and the treatments that worked for him were the same ones that worked for me. After thinking about some of the other types I was able to identify them in other ADD/ADHD people I knew. The author describes his experiences in treating the different types with different meds or treatments and some general treatments that help most everyone.
If you look at the other threads here, you'll see greatly differing opinions on weither this med works or doesn't and so forth. Some treatments don't work for some people and the author has done a pretty good job defining categories of ADD.
Great book, a little long for anyone with ADD to read (ironic, isn't it?), but highly recommended.
I really hope this kinda stuff takes off. Just simple, even inaccurate, mouse control could have so many possible implications. Think of Stephen Hawking, right now he communicates with a single button, upgrade that to a mouse and we may get the Grand Unified Theory of Everything by the end of the decade! Or how about controling extra interfaces on aircraft? You could change settings on the HUD without taking your hands off the stick. I bet this could be adapted to see if you are fit to drive (due to tiredness or blood alcohol content). Can't get the mouse to click on the start button? Then the car won't start! (ok, maybe that last one won't work..)
Odd that. A friend of mine backed his Explorer over his laptop bag full of stuff, including a laptop, Palm, Zip, etc. The LCD screen of the laptop was shot, a couple of keys were broke off (easily glued back on) but the CPU and drives were still fine, he still uses it as a portable desktop, he just ripped off the panel and plugs a monitor in. The laptop started off as an HP and ended up very Compaq, imagine that.
Windows only, and only 2 processors? Darn. Now what am I going to do with the 14 node ClusterKnoppix I put together this afternoon. ::Digitac

Thanks for re-filling my Netflix queue!
Would you please reply to these questions in the form of PA comic strips? Thanks.

Sorry, but the word BEFORE "NO" is "yes" encrypted using a language differential. "Encrypted" is the word AFTER "NO". ::Digitac
Now we know Ralph Nader's /. id!
Good luck Nader!
Funny, I just took their test and ended up dead center:
Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: -0.12
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -0.15
I guess I'm voting for myself this election.

That's right, they probably got in on the "Buy 899 Get 1 Free" Sale. So in reality they have a nice even 900 racks. Makes much more sense that way.
Why don't you just put a fish in your ear?

Double in size? So, where do I send my resume? (if the rumor is true of course).
But wait, if Jobs is running that must mean Larry Ellison is already running...
Ok, who's the wiseass who put "He's dead, Jim." for the quote at the bottom of Slashdot?
Coincidence? I think not.
Ok, how about flight with no moving parts at all? Ion Craft
