I used to work for a company where The Managing Director frequently used to send (usually offensive) emails to the wrong people by accident. His usual error was to insult someone behind their back and accidentally include them in the cc field!
Whenever this happened, he used to come hurtling down the stairs and rip out the Ethernet cable from the mail server in an attempt to stop the mail going out!
At first I thought he was trying to outrun the electron charge as it traversed through the network cabling, but it turns out that at some point in the past, someone had reconfigured the mail server to delay all mail by 30 seconds, just so he had time to rip out the Ethernet cable in an emergency!

So, the logical thing to do is to create a new extension, and then work to get an iTunes plugin that will convert the file to lossy as it syncs.
Or, they could create some sort of drag-and-drop app that will do the necessary conversions for the end-user.
But the problem there is that this new plugin is competing with Flac, and has no major selling points. So, they bundle the new codec, with their existing near-monopoly, and viola! You have just leveraged your position in the market to provide an unfair advantage to a crappy product.
So, it's a container format with two different data streams in it, and you can stuff massively oversized files on your portable player, only you can only play the itty bity portion of that file that's the lossy one.
And the use case for this is?
When you stuff it full of DRM and sell it online, you can advertise "High quality. backwards compatible."
Even easier.. put a external HD with Truecrypt under your bed. Maybe take a second one into the office, Lock it in a drawer, just in case your house burns down..
Every week or so, use 1 to backup. Alternate which one. Add more drives, or more often backups until you get to the point you sleep easy at night.
Or hire a midget to follow you around with a backpack full of backups. Then hire an ogre to protect the midget. Carry a gun in case the ogre and the midget mutiny against you, and keep a cyanide capsule in your tooth filling, in case either one of them gets the gun.

So, apparently someone came up with a number and said this percent of the population is either too lazy or incompetent to hold a job. Any unemployment figure below this is considered "full employment".
Why is it such a strong meme in the slashdot community that it is ok for an adult to use adblock to protect him or her from obtrusive advertisements, but doing the same thing for a child is either censorship or abdicating parental responsibility?
I'm not saying that children should live in a perfectly sanitized world, but there are only so many times that you can say "That's a porn site, dear, just ignore it", before you want to install adblock.
