I can't think of any genres that DON'T suck on a touch screen.
Rythm games ! I almost considered buying an iPad just for Jubeat. We are also starting to see touch screen based arcade games such as DjMax Technika and Reflec Beat.
AFAIK, Google does not have problems with hacktivists. Neither does Apple. Even Microsoft, which was almost synonymous with evil at some point fares better than Sony.
Why would server names be different than real names. You are not called NYM2 because you are the second male child born in New York. And New York is not called BEC4 because it is the fourth big city on the east coast.
Purely functional names are usually hard to remember and hard to pronounce. Also, names like prod-dns1 and dev-web1 make good alias but are no good for actual hardware. What if you decide to put a mail server on prod-dns1 ? Should your server be named "mail" or "prod-dns1" ?
The idea that google employees work with a make-the-world-better spirit simply proves that the company is well managed. This should be the mindset of all employees in all companies, pride means good productivity. But how about the higher management ? Their goal is to make money for the shareholders, no more, no less. Note that it doesn't implies being evil.
1 - *I* don't drive and phone/text at the same time. Part of the reason is that it is illegal in my country. 2 - I am not denying the fact that using a smartphone is dangerous, I am questioning the fact that using a smartphone is more dangerous than being drunk. 3 - WTF are you doing on the motorway with your bicycle ? (in the article, none of the road sections tested look bicycle-friendly)
Yes it is a pain. But for sensitive data, this is what is done.
I have worked for confidential project and none of it was connected to the internet, even indirectly. To copy a file, we had to give a USB drive to the sysadmin, it was scanned for viruses and copied to the secure network. And anything that goes out of the network was treated like a confidential document. Also, everything have to be stored in a secure, windowless room. And "confidential" is the lowest classification.
If you are talking/texting you can always put down the phone it you encounter a difficult situation. If you are drunk, you can't just stop being drunk just because you want to.
Real audiophiles use silver plating, which give a much more brighter sound. Gold may sound warmer but you will lose a lot of details that only silver can offer.
Fighting piracy (real piracy, with guns, not copyright stuff) is inherently racist. Piracy happen mostly in developing countries, i.e. brown and black people. So, by saying we don't need pirates, you're being racist. A high standard of living and high birth rate will always lead to overpopulation, whatever the race is.
Getting porn through firewalls is the easy part. Where I work we have a restrictive policy (http/https only with authenticated filtering proxy). And if I wanted porn, I could get it anytime. Not all sites are filtered and if they are, I just need a simple web proxy (like phproxy or glype). Actually useful stuff like SSH, webmails, Dropbox, git/svn/cvs/hg, ntp, etc... are much more difficult to work around.
Electronic road signals will be probably have to be approved by the state, and use cryptography to prevent spoofing. And for each unusual situation the car will switch to manual. At first, it will be quite often, than, as progress is made this will become more rare, up to the point where we can really go full-auto. It is also possible to combine manual override and a driver not paying attention. The car just has to enter some kind safe mode if the driver fails to react. For example, a car may stop in front of a construction site and wait until the driver wakes up. It may be annoying to others but it is usually not dangerous.
Imaging is what they do best, at least on consumer to semi-pro level. Their cameras, camcorders and TVs are quite nice. They are also very good at image processing. For example their camcorders have excellent digital stabilization. As for software, Sony Vegas is one of the best NLE for small budgets.
Everything else they do is average quality stuff at best, and they are shitty at everything security-related.
In France, we now have a new carrier (free mobile) that offer just that : 20 euros/month for unlimited voice/SMS and 3GB/month data with no restrictions. Compared to other carriers, you have more for less than half the usual price. One of the reasons the can do that is because they don't subsidize anything. They do sell phones but you need to pay full price, either up front or with a credit.
Right now, millions of people are making the switch, and other carriers had to respond with similar offers.
So yes, I believe that the "dumb pipe" model works.
Good engineers are precious, and companies that are not total crap are ready to pay good money to get them. He may be replaced by a work visa from India or China but if he does, the "work visa" will be a highly skilled engineer that will be paid as much as an American citizen in the same league.
Only low skill work is off-shored for cost reasons.
Google and the mainline developers hold different point of view. For Google, the kernel is just a component of their OS, this is the reason why they can get away with hacks that mainline developers view as brain damage. They just need to get it to work with Android.
Trying to merge the mainline kernel with Android is just a bonus witch benefits both parties.

Interesting. So viewing history is a stored part of an account, and is something that would be available to anybody who gained access to the account?
Yes, obviously, and there are several ways to access it. One of them your dashboard : https://www.google.com/dashboard/ .

He didn't say that XBox Live was a wonderful social experience, he said it was better than Fa(r)cebook.
Both of you are probably right.

Don't pilots and air traffic controllers have mandatory rest time ?
Google don't want to censor videos. Everything they take down is a potential loss in advertising money.
They do it because of the laws.

Maybe for the deaf. For everyone else, there is the radio.
Welcome to one of the downsides of a flat earth
The other thing on the downside of a flat earth is a giant turtle.
Now that we have the printing press, the codex is completely outdated.

If Google loses this one, we can use it as a precedent to attack obsolete DRM systems.
