  5. Digital Cable is the issue on What Happened to Media PCs? · · Score: 1, Interesting

Cable cards might be the solution, but right now I have this nice almost free DVR that records HD and tunes all my channels already plugged into my TV. Any type of tuner card right now will have to pass through to that device as it cannot directly tune all my encrypted channels nor HD over the cable. Thus making another point that could break and making it almost useless. Make a PCI express card that does all of the functions of my DVR (tuning all my digital cable channels, video on demand from my cable provider, HD tuning off my digital cable) and I'm interested. Otherwise its not worth it to me.

For the record I have a media center box and an extender.

  8. Re:Energy efficiency on Urging Congress to Cancel the Ethanol Tariff · · Score: 0

Exactly! Interfering with things only creates a pendulum swing with more unpredictable change. It is almost the same idea as the carefully managed prime interest rate. Things that will happen that you might not think about are: increased postage (did you know there is a proposal out now for stamp prices to jump 10 cents next year?), increased shipping costs (UPS, FedEx), increased prices on everything you buy in any store (it has to get from a factory to your local retailer), etc etc. It doesn't just affect the "evil gas guzzling SUV drivers" hehe.

The problems we have here are two fold. The one on most people's minds is the gas cost this is a result of some ill timed refining shortages combined with world events. This will sort out to a degree once refining is back online for summer. The rest is up to securing oil supply from other places. This is viewed as a short term problem because the fun lovely analysts help drive this up up up. Long term we need alternative fuels, etc.

The second problem is carbon footprint. This is a very long term goal with short term progress. We should steer towards this with innovation driven by consumer purchasing demand, not by intervention and artificial refined gasoline pricing/taxes.

I own a mid size SUV with a V6. I use it to haul things and people. I did seriously consider the Lexus RX440h when making a purchase but in the end didn't like the vehicle. The fact that it did tempt me is a good thing and shows we are progressing. (The prius is an ugly sad car, so I am disregarding it here.) Hope is out there and we are definately headed in the right direction.

  9. Rate me down, but I'm so sick of the EU on EU Says Microsoft Still Not Compliant · · Score: -1, Flamebait

Ok I realize we are supposed to hate MS here, but you know what? I'm sick of the EU's constant whining. Maybe Bill lined the pockets of the US govt, but MS did things to help resolve this and even did totally stupid things like un-bundle the media player just for the EU. WTF good is an OS without an included media player? I think it is time for the EU to stuff it and move on.

On the topic of bias'..."Yea open source, yea linux, boo windows" is not the answer just the same as the total opposite is not the answer. Each thing is a tool for a solution. I work for one of the largest companies in the world and I think that Windows is rightly our standard desktop. I also think that Linux is ideal for server side solutions as well. Both have their uses. Neither one is perfect.

For the reccord I use Mac's at home, am an Apple and Microsoft shareholder and a US citizen.

  10. cost of content on eBooks - What's Holding You Back? · · Score: 1

My trouble with ebooks has always been the cost of content. If it is no cheaper than a physical book, why buy it? I don't mind the upfront cost of a reader and I don't mind the DRM. What I want is cost savings passed on to the consumer from cost savings regarding distribution and printing. I even don't mind the interface. Ideally a two screen reader (given flat enough sides and a light weight) would be my top choice, but I can deal with a single page one. I'm excited about the upcoming sony ereader (even though their have lost my respect with DRM). If they get the price right and the content availability right I may buy into it.

I first used MS's ereader software which I really enjoyed (with the free content they provided), but battery life sucked. The new eink tech being used now makes me more hopeful. I did get my hands on the sony hardware at CES and was really impressed.

  12. Excited on Sony Reader Taking Hold? · · Score: 1

I'm not too excited about the DRM possibilities, but I took a look at the reader hardware at CES and was really impressed. It was my first time using an e-ink based display. They are very readable and surprisingly light. It is odd to poke at a display and not have it react like an LCD. The display looks like a nicely contrasted grayscale, but feels like a solid printed surface.

The demo units had various print media samples including technical, fiction and manga. All looked fantastic.

I was into the whole Microsoft Reader thing when it came out, but battery life made it unusable. This answers that challange in spades.

I saw a lot of cool things at CES, but this was one of my favorites. My only complaint, make it while like the Sony Libre.

The catch for me will be if the books are priced right. They have an amazing opprotunity here to storm the market but pricing books cheaper than printed versions and giving away sample chapters to entice, but I have a feeling that won't happen.

I want new shows on iTunes. I want to be able to pick up a show I missed because maybe my DVR wasn't setup right.
