  1. On the war coverage in general... on Updates on War in Iraq · · Score: 2, Insightful

Anyone else tired of continous "LIVE" coverage of, well nothing? I was home at lunch and they were showing a night vision cam on CNN, just in case something happens at that particular second. Lots of talking heads with really nothing to say, just the same old crap over and over, and then one missile lands and they are all over that.

I think I'm going to resolve to sticking with the 6:00pm news for the most part...get a nice overview with the days events and move on, or possibly look for more info if something has happened.

  2. *whew* glad I don't have to bother with that!! on Video Capturing Guide at Ars Technica · · Score: 2, Interesting

Well I read the article and I must say that I'm glad I just don't have to bother - I have a 30Hr PVR that is fully integrated with the satellite receiver and can IR blast to control my VCR if necessary. The picture quality is indistinguishable from the live broadcast, it even records high end audiostreams when available (though I keep meaning to expirement and see if it is even recording SAP and other signals...). But most importantly my wife can use it - in fact she loves the system to death...she would get quite anxious if a PC appeared attached to the entertainment system... Pause/Record etc all the standard VCR controls are built into the remote.

Though they seem to have the best settings all ready to go - maybe someone will write software to handle all of this automatically?

Even better will be once DVD-R stereo component style decks become common place and affordable. That would be much nicer for archiving than the VCR!

Well I don't have the title, but I am 'the' computer person MIS/IT/DB Manager etc... for a fair sized process manufacturing business (pushing $100 Million). We are getting bent over left, right, and center by licensing, Microsoft, ERP software, you name it.

We feel trapped in the MS web and would love to break out. We spend $200K easy on licensing costs annually easily...so here's my thinking.

Is there not some way we could use this money to hire a Linux programmer and a Linux admin guru or some combination of consultants, etc and start getting our butts off of the MS shaft? I don't mind Windows on the client so much. I can handle leaving Finance with Excel, but Open Office could replace much of that. I'm sure something could replace Exchange etc... And as for the ERP side, well it's fairly complex but at least if we had an option for something that could run on Linux with say, Oracle or whatever (at least be flexible) database backend...

Where the heck would I start with all of this? I am a Windows/DOS guy, but I don't mind learning Linux...it's just a matter of getting started.

Ugh, maybe this should be an Ask Slashdot question...

PS1 would be nice too, but I rarely play any PS1 games anymore - I've got a few kicking around (King's Field, Vandal Hearts, and Frogger for the wife) - but heck it's probably trivial for them to include PS1 compatibility so they'd better do it!!

One thing I would like to see that annoyed me about PS2- I think that they should've included the ability to partition off a small space in the PS2 memory card for a PS1 compatible storage area- it's a pain to swap cards (the PS1 cards don't always seem to like to fit as nice). If the PS3 has a HDD or higher capacity capabilities of some sort, I truly hope they allow this sort of thing for PS2 and PS1 media!

  9. Public Companies part of the problem? on Are Coders Exempt From California's Overtime Laws? · · Score: 4, Interesting

This is slightly off-topic, but it's related. A lot of the crap that goes on whether it be screwing employees out of pay, muddled decisions etc - it seems to me that it most often happens to companies that have publically traded stocks.

I work for a fairly large company ($80-100 million), but it is all privately held. They treat their employees with respect (for the most part, though bad managers tend to not be around for too long), have great benefits, pay overtime, heck they even spend a fair chunk of change on the Christmas party.

My theory is that companies like the one I work for, and others of similar size can work a lot better and can afford to treat their employees better if they so choose etc, because they are not tied into the tempests of the public stock exchange. They don't have share holders to constantly report too (well there are share holders, but all within the company). They don't have to worry about losing millions if a bad report comes out. All the money the company has is 'real'. Sure they didn't have the huge inlay of capital at first, but instead a solid business and careful spending, meant that eventually the company became quite profitable and more importantly, remains profitable.

    Does this make any sense?

In fact it was actually quite disillusioning (is that a word?)- it seems like the humans were very mean to the robots - there was a robot holocaust and they were just defending themselves, trying to be free etc...so really what rights do the humans in The Matrix have to complain??? I think almost more than anything else, that the PS2's DVD playing capabilities catapaulted it ahead of the good old Dreamcast (which truly was a fine system in its own right); PS2 appeared at just the right time - people were starting to look around for DVD options and many ended up with PS2's because they might as well get the latest and coolest game system (lots of marketing and PS1 had a good fanbase), when they bought a DVD player.

DVD really helped Sony past the chicken and the egg problem many consoles faced, add to that the fact that it could play the vast library of PS1 games and Sony trampled all over Sega.

It's kind of scary, guess I just never thought of it before - say for example, you beat Microsoft, defending yourself in some sort of trial - if MS remains PO'd with you could they not just keep appealing forcing you to return to court again and again?
