the article says that they are going after "for profit" orginazations. What if the so-called orginazation doesn't ask for money, just a donation... wouldn't that put a crimp in their court case. After all, a big business charging for music they don't have a right to sell is just asking to be caught and have a big fine slapped on them...
console giant Nintendo takes on the RIAA in a multi-million dollar lawsuite claiming that the Nintendo Gameboy and Gameboy Advance is in violation of muisc copy rights...
i hope your being a bit sarcastic by saying that a cheap $20 speaker set will sound better than "hundreds if not thousands of dollars of amps and speakers". for real buddy, $20 speakers can put out what... like 2 - 8 watts (RMS) if your lucky, and even at the higher volume levels its sure to bomb out. Now if you were to say, spend $60 - $100 on a decent set of speakers with a sub (and most people will probable flame me for this but here it goes anyways) like creative's inspire 2.1 or even a basic set of altec lansing speakers, i've found them to be quite decent. If you want a really good set of speakers you could always go with the klipsch pro-media 5.1's. they sell for abou $700 (CDS). Now if you can find me a set of $20 speakers that sound better then those klipsch pro-media 5.1 -- i will print out this post and eat it.
was at the London Smackdown tournament that I went to. This guy had to carry around an extra cooling pouch with all the stuff built into it. There are 3 pics of it here, here, and here. The third pic is the best view of the pouch and the first two show you the in'erds on the computer.
AMD is getting better in their CPU design, but after the whole K6 series (where finding a good cpu was like getting a good prize in a cracker jack box), i'm still very werry about purchasing AMD. I can honestly say that I have never had a problem with any intel processor; i do belive i've only come across maybe 3 DOA CPU's in the last 4 years (i work for a computer store, and we build our own systems) but AMD, i can remember going through about 4 CPU's before I found one that works, and these were all brand new out of the box CPU's. Our main supplier for CPU's stopped selling AMD because they were wasting too much money sending them back for RMA. Maybe i'll give AMD another chance after a few more generation of processors come out and they have a very low failure rate.
i guess it would just come down to a snapshot image to be transmitted, but I can see where your comming from. Unless the cell phone is going to hold the entire mug shot database, then it would need a continous link to where that database is to compare the snapshot with the mug shots. If if the phone is going to contain the mug shot database, then how is it going to be updated whenever new mug shots are added or taken away... ah well.. i guess i'll wait and see what they come up with.
if i want to grow a moustache, then shave it off, grow a beard a month later, then shave it off, then grow a goatee, and shave it off -- i guess the point im trying to make is, what happens when i want to change my apperance (ever so slight or major) from anything like facial hair, hair colour, pearcings, or anything else that can be done to your face... will it send an alert to athorities each time?

I found an article on New-Technologies which was a good read on the subject. It had people to contact, other related links on the subect. It also said that it wouldn't cost much more to produce than regular concrete. It used some stuff like left over by-products from steel production.
If your intrested in kind of stuff New-Technologies has a good article about it. They also have a bunch of links to related sites reguarding concrete advancements.
/. will start charging to filter out spam as well... oh wait a second... -- no before i get flammed for this; if it helps with the spam, go for it, but I think they should re-think their pricing scheme before they implement it or am i just being cheap by thinking $19.99 is too much for mail?

I would love to see a 500hp diesel-electric fuel cell run silent. I know, I know, your just trying to be a bit sarcastic here... i couldn't resist
automobile theft has been totally eliminated? what planet are you from? no, seriosly, where do you live because I know that where I'm from, cars still get stolen on a regular basis; even ones that have audio alarms and tracking devices.
they could implement something like this into laptop security. I agree it would probably be a bit excessive, but you know as well as I do, that nobody else would ever try to take your notebook once word got around. Check out the video clip of it in action... I'm sure most if you/.er's out there have already seen it in action.
... i would have checked the article but im pretty sure that i can't get it cause it's been/.'d - but can you wrtie more than 4.8gb's yet? dont dvd's currently support 2 sides 2 layers per side making them capable of hold up to 18gb of info (roughly anyways). I'm all for the dvd writters when i know that they will do the full disc and not just one side one layer...
oh... just got the article - but damn is it slow comming... here's what it says....
Hewlett-Packard Compan today announced it will ship its latest super combination DVD writers, which allow customers to create and share custom CDs and DVDs using video, digital images, music and data. The HP DVD Writer dvd200i, a powerful internal drive, and the HP DVD Writer dvd200e, HP's first external DVD writer, include features making them very easy for consumers to use and enabling the creation of DVDs by notebook PC owners. Now, consumers can safely save their cherished memories -- everything from photos to custom-made home movies(1) -- with the confidence that they can't be erased or copied over. This new protection is made possible by the drives' support for the new DVD+R format. Additionally, DVD+R discs offer increased compatibility with most existing and future DVD-ROM drives and DVD video players.
According to a recent IDC report,(2) DVD writer shipments are expected to grow from 3.9 million units this year to 35 million in 2005. While consumers use rewritable DVD for a variety of applications, a primary benefit of HP's new products will be simplifying the transfer and editing of home video. In fact, in a recent HP consumer survey, 66 percent of respondents indicated video applications were the primary appeal of DVD writers.
``The idea of sending video highlights of a child's soccer game to Grandma on a personalized DVD really arouses consumer passion for DVD writers,'' said Dean Sanderson, product portfolio manager, HP Customer Business Organization, North America. ``As such, we are bundling with our DVD writers software that gives customers a quick and simple way to edit movie clips and allows anyone to produce great video.''
Also included with the drive is the latest MyDVD software by Sonic Solutions that offers powerful Edit-on-DVD technology, making it simple to change content already on a DVD+RW disc without going through the time-consuming process of rewriting an entire disc.
To support the variety of ways consumers use DVD writers, these new drives can write to several different media formats, including DVD+RW/+R and CD-R/RW. And, with the industry's fastest write speeds, the HP DVD Writer 200 series burns those discs quickly -- allowing consumers to write three hours of video to a DVD in less than 30 minutes.(3) The drives offer speeds of 2.4x (write), 2.4x (rewrite) and 8x (read). In addition, CD recording is simple and fast with 12x CD-R (write), 10x CD-RW (rewrite) and 32x CD (read) speeds.
Furthermore, the HP DVD Writer dvd200e drive allows customers to choose a connection type -- either IEEE 1394 or USB 2.0 -- with the flip of a switch, making it easy to install and share the drive on a desktop or notebook PC.
Pricing and Availability
The HP DVD Writer dvd200i drive is expected to be available at major retail outlets in the United States by mid-April at an estimated U.S. street price of $499.(4)
The HP DVD Writer dvd200e drive is expected to be available at major U.S. computer retail outlets in May at an estimated U.S. street price of $599.(4)
HP DVD+RW discs are currently available nationwide at an estimated U.S. street price of $10.99. HP DVD+R discs are expected to be available in April at an estimated street price of $5.99. At the same time, HP also will release a three-pack of DVD+RW discs at an estimated U.S. street price of $25.99 and a five-pack of DVD+R discs at an estimated U.S. street price of $27.99.
and look, nothing that I can see about recordable sizes... anyone else got any info about this?
come on now, im pretty sure that they made the statement in general. Like your drivers licence has your birthday on it and my d.v. has my birthday on it, therefore d.v.'s in general hold information like names, address's and birthdays. I dont think he ment it as the cards will hold multiple birthdays... or where you just being sarcastic?
well im sure everyone is thinking somewhere along the same lines of security issues with these cards. What will happen if someone is able to sucessfully duplicate an individuals card. The information has to be kept somewhere, and if that database ever gets hacked, say goodbye to everything - credit card numbers, back account information, health issues that could arrise from having all your health and medical conditions kept on this one card - - On the plus side i'm sure there is going to be lots of bounus to the card as well. Bac kto the medical reasons, anyone that carries their card could have all the treatment proceduers for that "rare life threating disease" they may have. I think it would be a major toss up, the list of pros and cons could go on for a very long time.

mac and cheese... lots of it... 3 years worth is usually good... and gone within the first few months...
yeah, a few people have... these were the first to come to mind though.

if it really sucks, then why would you want to "buy a whole bunch more of them really cheap?" Just curious...

Assembly language programmers prefer to execute Algorithm on their hands and knees.
