    I think you meant the first edition of the book. The 2nd Edition has been hugely simplified to "bring it up to date with the current trend in CS".

    I would also like to add the Garey and Johnson's book "Computers and Intractability" to your list.

    In my university they judge a person's performance by the number of papers they produce. As such some professors would frequent just about any publication at all to get the numbers. Given this context, the quality of a person's research these days co-relates poorly with the number of papers they publish. Hence I have to applaud the responsible attitude of your senior staff.

    In general, if a paper do not contibute to new understanding, better let it be unpublished than to burden the world with more garbage. Reviewers' and readers' times are not less precious than yours!

    That's why most of the useful news I get these days comes from Slashdot and not CNN.

    But how can we be sure that Slashdot can be trusted?

    Assuming that Mr. Taco and Mr. Neil are selfless lamas immuned to the allure of money, we still need to ask ourselves, "what prevents the media conglomerates from hiring smart people to karma-whore (used as a verb here), hijack the moderations and influence us towards their benefits?"

    Those of you who cruise occasional at -1 to see what escaped the radar knows what I mean.

    The only comfort that we have is numbers. Hence, actively participate in discussions and moderate diligently - even when you are a perpertual score 1 loser like me. Our only defence, this is.

    The heart of computer science is about "computation" (not "computers", as is popularly believed), a mathematical concept formalized by Turing, Church and Post. Hence (as with all things in the field of mathematics,) as long as the original insights remain correct and valid, our work regarding computation will continue to hold.

    Also worth noting, is that your electronical devices will however, pass as new ways of machine constructions come to be.

    I believe the current trend of blatantly looking for the largest and dumbest man for husband has resulted in a decline of human intellect.

    This is just academic interest --- I am neither against nor for this trend. (Hell, I would go for a dumb blonde anytime myself.)
