  1. Mis-casting? on Will Smith as I, Robot · · Score: 3, Insightful

Is it just me or does Will Smith seem like a very bad choice for this film?

I'm a big Asimov fan (robot/foundation series), but I really can't see Will Smith playing in this. Even in his most serious films (have not seen Ali yet, so I don't know about that one) he's often playing a comic character, and this doesn't exactly fit in the "I Robot" story.

Anybody else that have read the book(s) that like to comment on this?

I can't speak for the others, but Nokia isn't using Microsoft's os as they have their own (Symbian) and it seems that most phone-providers are actually switching to this one. Sendo is a good example of this, as told in a previous slashdot story.

The companies that have been using the Windows Smartphone, now known as Windows CE .NET as far as I can tell, have reported a lot of serious problems with the os. It constantly crashes and freezes (no, this is not a joke nor a flame, this is a fact), something that is driving more and more of them over to the Symbian OS.

To conclude, there are many companies that have decided to use the Microsoft alternative, but more and more of these are ditching it in favour of the more commonly used Nokia os.

There is rumour that Star Trek Nemesis (the 10th ST-movie) will lead to a new series called "Mariner" which according to the latest SFX will:

"parallel Enterprise's rise of the federation by telling the story of its decline and fall, in which the Federation will 'lose over half its territories to a new, completely alien foe that Future Guy works for'. The Titan/Mariner, an untested ship, will be in charge of taking care of established threats like the Borg and the Dominion. Mariner will pave the way for the seventh Trek series, which will see the Federation restored to it's former glory, and 'a fan favourite enemy from the original series joining the Federation'. Oh, and apparently the men in suitsare so impressed by the way Stuart Baird and John Logan reinvigorated the Trek film franchise with some fresh blood that they're considering handing over Enterprise to some new boys, with Enterprise producers Brannon Braga and Rick Berman getting shifted to the new series if they don't pull their socks up."

They also speculate that Riker (Jonathan Frakes) will be the captain of the Titan/Mariner.

CRTs have no such limit, which in itself is no big deal since few applications go beyond 24-bit color. The real difference is in color accuracy, a quality not reflected in manufacturer specs. CRT monitors far outperform LCD monitors when it comes to color. A graphic designer, for example, wouldn't touch an LCD monitor."

Now this makes me wonder, I thought most graphic designers used Mac, but Apple only supplies these with LCD's these days.. Has anybody told Apple that this probably isn't a good idea?

  11. Working with GPL based code in the military on Open Source in the Military? · · Score: 1
I'm in the military in Norway, Signal Batalion, and most of the equipment we use for communication runs on Linux, Unix and Solaris. Most of the specific equipment-related code that we use (purchased from companies working for the Norwegian military) are actually licenced under the GPL, and since the Norwegian military is the only buyer and user of this code, then there's no one else that gets the source so there really is no problem when it comes to equipment secrets.
You need to remember that the only person that has the right to get the code is the person that also has the binary, and as I said, since the Norwegian military is the sole owner and user of this then only we have the right to demand the source.

All in all my experience is that GPL-based software goes much better with the military than closed-source, as the military themself have the possibility of going over the source to check for backdoors etc etc. This isn't possible if some of our servers would be running for instance Windows 2000.

Since all my pc's at home run Linux and as I like playing games on my pc's I've bought every single Loki port that got out. Loki did a great deal to make people like me not fall to much behind when it comes to pc-gaming. And I wish to thank them for that. I'm not sure that they know how much they've really meant to many of us, but I hope they get the appreciation they deserve.

I'm part of the KDE-project and am always trying to get more desktop-users over to Linux, and I'm convinced that Linux will one day take over the majority of the desktop-market, the only problem is that there needs to be a reason for people to switch. Better uptime, lesser crashes, a better looking gui etc etc is nice, but it's really no good reason for a family to replace their windows-desktop with Linux yet (besides the philosophy, which most people don't care about anyways and certainly not enough to replace their windows because of it). I've always been trying to find that one thing that will start the convertion, but I haven't been able to think of anything yet. Untill today. After reading Scott Drakers interview it hit me. A killer native Linux game! I believe Scott has a good point here. Imagine Quake4 released ONLY on Linux!!!!?!?!

What would happend if something like this occured? Well, I know that most of my friends would certainly install Linux on their machines (in addition to Windows) just to get to play this game, and they would certainly pay for it too. The problem with the general Linux user is that he doesn't play games under Linux, and the ones that do often doesn't care enough to pay for it, but with a killer game available only for Linux you wouldn't have to worry about that, because most of the players of the game would be windows-users, people that are used to paying for games!

Is there anybody out there that knows of any really good game available for Linux only now or in the near future? (TuxRacer is too small mind you) Or any games planned to be released only under Linux?

Imagine sitting at a LAN with a lot of windows-friends around you, firing up a killer game while everybody starts gathering around you watching. Guys: "WOW! What game is that?" You: "It's Quake4." Guys: "Damn, I want it!" You: "Sorry, only available for Linux" Guys: "Can you help me setup a linux-installation on my pc then?"
