  1. Got to look at the data as a whole on NASA Satellite Measurements Show Unprecedented Greenland Ice Sheet Melt · · Score: 5, Interesting

Everyone is really good at rationalizing specific data points like "it's part of a 150 year trend". The problem is there's world wide evidence and not just glacier melts. There's a measurable trend going back to the industrial revolution when the CO2 release started. It accelerated in the 80s as growth in third world countries kicked in. It's everything from glacier melting to weird weather and from sea level rise to a severe drought in the US to the worst one in Australia in several thousand years. What I keep hearing is every time a piece of evidence shows up is "I can explain that". At what point do we accept that all the "I can explain thats" add up to we've got a problem? Long term what we are staring at isn't a hot planet but one that overreacts to a spike in CO2 causing a worse ice age than the last one. Rationalizing is a little like sticking your head in the sand. Each rationalization is another inch. Eventually your head hits China and the planet is still warming whether you like it or not.

Sorry but the fact the gas companies got exemptions from the clean air and clean water acts makes me highly suspicious they knew from day one this was risky and they wanted to limit their exposure to lawsuits and fines. Shattering bedrock releases the gas just like it's supposed to do. The fact it migrates upward isn't shocking. Why exactly would you assume gas would stay put once you shatter what was containing it.

Natural gas in well water is quite common in coal regions (e.g. much of Pennsylvania). It's also common for hydrogen to build up in water heaters. So yea, I wouldn't say "normal", but the flaming tap water is unlikely to have anything to do with gas drilling a few miles away.

Actually a number of wells they have admitted the gas in the water was from gas drilling but they claimed it was from pre fracking drilling and not the fracking. Not sure how they are so sure about that one.

I strongly disagree. Games like Angry Birds with it's Romeo and Juliet story, without the Juliet, explore very deep themes like how to I angle this shot to take out the pig in the back. The birds and pigs are obviously the Capulets and Montague fighting a feud that can only end in tragedy, and a lot of bruised pigs.

  14. Re:Before thinking Musk is a fool... on Another Elon Musk Bet: Half of All Cars Built In 2032 Will Be Electric · · Score: 1

It's the costs that could drive sales not counting improvements in technology. Look at it this way with all the fracking electricity prices could be fairly flat for the next 20 to 50 years, inflation aside. Gasoline has to go up for two reasons, arguing is pointless and peak oil is here so the only thing keeping costs down is a slow economy. If we had kept up the demand we had pre real estate collapse we'd already be seeing $4 to $5 a gallon. China is burning more every day as well as much of the third world, hey in India they all want cars and few people drove just ten years ago. The point is in ground reserves are declining and demand is growing. Eventually electrics are going to look very attractive. People can complain about limited range all they want but realistically they only need the range a few times a year, most people. One day they'll be faced with $5 or $50 to $100 to fill up their compact. I can already cram $35 into my 10 gallon car. When money is tight that $5 fill up is going to look really attractive. I can already have an older car converted to a limited range car for under 10K. The under 20K car with 300+ mile range is on the way. I say in less than 5 years and almost certainly by 2020. An under 20K car you can fill up at home for around $250 a year? The family may still own a gas guzzler but I'll bet one member of the family is commuting electric by 2025. Also when the kid goes to college they may ask for a gas car but they'll get a cheap to drive electric which the college will likely provide chargers for. That's when things really change.

Most retailers are already hurting. A 10% drop in sales can kill them. They could easily see that in major cities. It would be an amusing turn if they killed off most of the Walmarts since they killed most of the mom and pop stores. The problem is it hurts employment across the board. Stores go under which is obvious but the lesser known affect is by shopping on line you don't have as much impulse buying so all the companies making those products will go under. Walmart already did that one. If a company couldn't get on the shelves in a Walmart there's a good chance they'd go under. Instead of a dozen or more shelves they could potentially get on they had one shot at it. Amazon does have a massive selection so the potential is huge for major cities.

Why this has always been an issue is the oldest bones found were always very far south. It seemed South America and the southern US were populated before the Clovis migration. Even Clovis itself is questionable since Asians never made that type of point the only other place they were made was Europe. They are ignoring the likelihood that there were migrations earlier that have no decendants. Just look at things like native american long houses. They are the same as Viking ones. Odds are there were multiple migrations from Europe that were wiped out. There have been skeletons found that were potentially European but the local indian groups have always fought testing. Look at another one the Mound Builders. That definitely started in the UK and it coincidentally showed up later in the Eastern US. There are simply too many coincidences related to the northeast and Europe.
