  1. Re:CStrike Rulez on PC Baangs In America · · Score: 1

Why is the parent of this modded up as informative? The really good players don't use cheats (see CPL- some of the best players in the world come to play and obviously without cheats). Valve Software recently implemented into Counter-Strike which has cut down cheating considerably, it stops programs from hooking it, they can auto update the cheat protection (like PunkBuster, but much more reliable), and they also have a wallhack block in place that actually stops people successively running a wallhack (and if it's popular enough, the cheat will be sent to valve by someone and killed) from seeing enemies behind walls even with the wallhack turned on by not sending them the player data.

The parent's post is a typical mentality among many people who don't know what they're talking about in regards to Half-Life. Some of these people even justify cheating because "everyone else is doing it" regardless of if it is true or not.

  2. Re:Vivendi does not own Valve on Microsoft to Buy Vivendi Games Division? · · Score: 1

The thinking that they will/would publish any and all Valve games may not seem like such a big deal. A new content delivery system is in beta testing at Valve, called Steam (www.steampowered.com). It automatically downloads updates and even updates the servers running it. There is no longer a download link as it is running a lot of bandwidth and they have a sufficient number of testers. But this is straight from Valve to the consumer, bypassing Sierra and all other publishes. The one advantage of anyone that would buy the company that publishes Valve's games (and has Sierra signed an exclusive contract? what's to say they wouldn't change companies? id Software has done it before) is that they would be able to publish the game for their platform (ie, insuring that Half-Life or Team Fortress 2 gets on their system no matter what, even perhaps pressuring them not to release on other systems).

Bottom line: it can have terrible consequences, but it can also be construed as being something that has done much more.

Actually, I used to help my friend with his family's PC a good deal, fixing problems when they came up. After awhile his mom came over to my house and offered to give me money for working on it, and you know what my mom did? Turned it down. For doing work. This perception is definitely widespread, but I must admit it can actually be fun to get praised for fixing pretty simple things.
