They should look at hiring this guy. The comedy more than makes up for any lack of technical skill.

  3. Instancing isn't new to Mythica on Unraveling The Mystery Of Tabula Rasa? · · Score: 2, Insightful

The more advanced MUDs have been doing area instancing for years. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean MS won't sue, but if they do it should mean they don't win.

  4. Wow on Nintendo - Stodgy, Not-So-Super Mario? · · Score: 2, Insightful

So now every console needs a Grand Theft Auto to even be viable? Sorry, it's a decent game, but is doesn't even come close to defining what gaming is or whatever the hell you seem to think. Game consoles existed before GTA type games existed and they'll continue to exist long after it's dead and buried. Who the hell cares whether or not Nintendo has a GTA type game? If that's all you want out of a system, I have to say your gaming experience must be pretty narrow.

  5. Speaking as ANOTHER guy who cut his teeth on Wolf on Discussing The Most Awaited Games Of 2004? · · Score: 1

I disagree, Halo was uninnovative, extremely repetitive, and ultimately boring. It survived on Xbox because it was made with the retardedness of console FPSes in mind, and all the Xbox fanboys had nothing better to buy. When it came out on PC and was put to the test against the best of the genre (Quake series, Half-life series) it flopped, and real FPS gamers saw it immediately for what it was: overhyped, hacked-up shit. Without a doubt Halo is probably the most overrated game of the last 5 years.

  6. I don't know what that is on Gametrac Handheld To Debut At CES · · Score: 2, Insightful

But it sure doesn't sound much like a "gaming device" with that list of features, none of which apart from the processor/graphics processors have anything to do with gaming. I'd like to know what relevance a "multimedia advertising system" has to a gaming device, too. Are they planning to sell adware games? Or maybe the ads are the games, punch-the-monkey banner style. Of course, even if that was the case, it'd still probably outsell the N-Gage.

  7. Interesting on Chessboxing - The Sport Of The Future? · · Score: 4, Funny

  8. Charades? on Encouraging Co-Operation In MMO Titles? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I think it'll be a long time before we're even close to a MMORPG which allows people to play charades. I'll be damned if I know how you're even meant to do it efficiently with current input devices.

Regardless, I think there's a lot than can be done to make MMORPGs more social/recreational without having to go this far. One thing I think would be great, but is really lacking in MMORPGs, are minigames. Seing able to sit down and play chess, poker, etc. at the local tavern or whatever would just be cool. Of course, games specific to the world would be even better, like a made-up card game (e.g. Tetra Master, Pazaak) or even (admittedly harder to make) things like racing games. Either way it gives people a reason to interact in a way that isn't directly part of the game, and people will undoubtedly use this flexibility creatively by holding tournaments for prizes, even gambling away their belongings. I don't really think you need to go to insane technical lengths to get people to socialize, but rather just give them a reason/excuse to do so.

  9. While it's probably quite a technical achievement on A Truly UserFriendly Game Audio Engine? · · Score: 1

I wouldn't really like to play a game like that. The music does sound like music, but it doesn't sound like good music, lacking the movements and progression that actually make songs good. Even as background music I think it'd be ultimately unfulfilling. I'd rather hear the same old Sephiroth song every time I meet him then a randomly generated "evil tune". Honestly it's hard to get tired of good music if it's not overused, but even if you do get tired of a certain song, I'd still rather listen to an overused "overworld theme" or whatever than ZenStrings.

  10. It's just so cool on Activision Anthology Adds Homebrew Games, Classics Lauded · · Score: 4, Insightful

that 7 year olds of today are still playing games like Pitfall (and hopefully enjoying them). Just goes to show that simple games like these can be just as entertaining as the multi-million-dollar budget extravaganzas we get today. Graphics can only really get you so far.

  11. Wow on On The Future Of PC Games At Retail · · Score: 4, Interesting

I had no idea the market share for PC games was so weak. I guess I understand it, but I still don't like the sounds of it. I own consoles now, and probably always will, but there are just some games that work best on a PC... and it'd suck to have those sort of games die out. I suppose with all the recent controversy about bad "console to PC conversions" (e.g. Insible War) it should have been more obvious. In the olden days it was all about crappy PC-to-console conversions, now it's starting to go the other way around.

  12. Well on Turbine Cuts Out Publishers With Funding Boost · · Score: 1

I certainly hope Turbine does a better job with their Live team this time, after their last game's abysmal failure in that respect. It doesn't take a genius to know that making every mob in the game 5x harder to encourage "grouping" isn't going to please the populace. Oh well, it was a good game while it lasted. The only satisfying thing is knowing that the players were *right*, despite the constant assertions of the Live team that "this is the only thing we can do to make a lasting and worthwhile game". A few months later, 80% of Asheron's Call 2 server were shut down/merged.

  13. Mai's bouncing on King of Fighters Censored for Stateside Release · · Score: 5, Informative

Actually, Mai's bouncing is reduced even in the arcades since KOF 2000. She still bounces during her moves but her standing/walking animation (in which the bounce is MOST obvious) is removed. Obviously they weren't willing to make 2 animations for everything, but it is her walking/standing animation have makes her bounce seem most obvious.

Interestingly, if the Neo Geo machine is set to the Japan locality, the bouncing will return. So it's not removed from the game as such, but rather "swtiched off" when the machine is set to English.

Some kid's going to do a barrel roll in Flight Simulator 2006 and become so unbalanced he'll fall off his chair and crack his head open. I don't think it's a good idea to mess with a sense that can seriously affect your ability to stay standing and move around, especially when it's just for the sake of a game.

  15. More Zelda on Zelda - Four Swords Gets Tetra's Trackers Bonus · · Score: 0

  20. Let's face the facts on Nintendo President On Future Of Gaming · · Score: 1, Insightful

Despite the fact that Nintendo aren't going so well in America with this current generation of consoles, they're just about the only company really willing to innovate. Microsoft especially has never innovated a damn thing in their life, and Xbox is no exception, they just milk some done-to-death idea over and over, only with a bigger budget and a bigger hype machine. Meanwhile Nintendo is the only company still around that's willing to take risks. If they can't survive against the all-powerful force that is crappy MS hype, I wouldn't be looking forward to gaming's co-called "future" under Microsoft anyway (just wait for Halo XP, killer title in 2007).
